When the children of workers on a 1930s Maui sugar plantation were chased away from playing in the nearby irrigation ditches, local science teacher Soichi Sakamoto had an idea. He would take responsibility for the children and train them to swim. Using his science background, Sakamoto developed a strict practice regime for the kids, honing their skills and building their strength and endurance. They formed a team and began to dominate events, first nationally and then internationally — until they made it all the way to Olympic gold! Told in simple rhyme, Sakamoto’s story will inspire athletes, coaches — and everyone who believes impossible dreams can come true.

They're not used to hard labor and village life. But despite his reservations, Ming befriends a charming city boy called Li. Book excerpt: The Swimmer is one of the very first literary sports novels. Although not a competitive swimmer himself, Mackay was a passionate swimmer and well acquainted with the scene of competitive swimming and diving in Berlin around 1900. This historical picture of the sports world at that time will be familiar to today ́s readers in many ways, but may surprise us in its details, for example, of competitions no longer widely practiced, such as "diving for plates" and "swimming with obstacles." For this reason it is a valuable historical document. It is also an exciting sports story with "the thrill of victory and the agony of defeat." But The Swimmer is much more: it is a fascinating psychological study of the rise and fall of a champion swimmer in his single-minded pursuit of his sport - and fame. Mackay ́s protagonist Franz Felder was "born to swim" and we follow his first, happy dip into the water to his last, fatal plunge. All attention is on young Felder, but other characters are clearly delineated: his wise coach, the equally single-minded sculptor, the seductress from the international demi-monde - last, and alas least, the loyal, devoted fan. The story is told with insight and compassion, as Mackay, the "omniscient narrator," looks into the deepest feelings and motives of his protagonist, whom Mackay ́s biographer has described as "an enchanted beast of the fairy tale books, under whose rough exterior is hidden a prince"-a price who "never found the charm that would have brought out his true character." Mackay makes all of this come alive for us, so that we sympathize with Felder even as we perceive the flaws that bring about his downfall. The book can be read on several levels: as a historical document, a thrilling sports story, a human drama. In every case, it is a good read.

Book excerpt: The story of Natalie Coughlin's remarkable battle back from injury and burnout to be-come America's Golden Girl—a two-time Olympic Gold Medal winner in swimming and the most decorated female athlete at the 2004 Olympics Five years ago, Natalie Coughlin's promising swimming career was all but extinguished when a devastating shoulder injury ended her dreams for the 2000 Olympics. After becoming, at age 15, the first person ever to qualify for all 14 women's events at the U.S. Nationals, she seemed destined to follow the path of so many other young swimming stars—devoured by an oppressive training schedule. In Golden Girl, Sports Illustrated's Michael Silver—coauthor of many bestselling sports memoirs—including Dennis Rodman's, Kurt Warner's, and Jerry Rice's—tells the story of Natalie's remarkable journey back from the brink. With complete access to her family, friends, coaches, teammates, and adversaries, Silver details how she made the crucial choice to train with University of California coach Teri McKeever. Together the two, star and coach, have defied long-standing training methods, forcing the swimming community to rethink the ways in which it treats its talent. An inspirational story of a complex and courageous young athlete, Golden Girl is also a fascinating portrait of the fractious world of competitive swimming.

Book excerpt: God of the Splitsecond relates to events that are more than mere coincidences. The book of short stories starts with "Emma on the Road" as the first event the author remembers as a child seeing God in action. The other event is "Babushka in the Field" which happened 50 years and 5 seconds later, from which she coined the title of this book. The most dramatic is the "Berlin Exodus through the Red Sea", where over a thousand Mennonites escaped in a freight train unnoticed by the Soviets to get to Paraguay. The book covers the period from World War II to the present. It includes many other "God of the Splitsecond" events in the lives of Corrie ten Boom, Livingstone, Squanto, Dayuma of the Aucas, Schaeffer's L'Abri, and others. It encourages the readers to see the hand of Providence in their own lives. The original version of this book was written for the grandchildren of the author's family, for whom she made some 300 drawings to illustrate each story. Trudy Morrow, M.A., was born in 1933 in a 200-year old German colony in Eastern Europe. In the upheaval of 1940, Hitler had multitudes of ethnic people removed from their homeland and resettled in Poland and the so-called "Reich". She remembers wartime experiences and life as refugees in West Germany, but values the blessings of her American home in New England for over 40 years. The author has a Masters degree in social psychology from the University of New Haven, worked as secretary, administrator, educator, and medical translator for many years. She is the widow of an Anglican pastor and was involved in Christian education, art, and philosophy. She developed the Otaspeed-Writing SystemTM (www.otaspeedwriting.com) and is the founder of Otawit Institute TM, Apologetics for Teens (www.otawit.com).

And what happens when the obsessions of unbalanced misfits, desperate loners and aggrieved ex-partners spiral out of control? Stalking is on the increase - and it isn't only celebrities who become the targets of irrational individuals. Men and women with everyday jobs who lead ordinary lives can just as easily become someone else's obsession. Each year, hundreds of people fall victim to terrifying harrassment by people they may have never met. Richard Gallagher has researched this disturbing phenomenon to provide a serious investigation into this unsettling but intriguing crime. Featuring interviews with victims, police, psychologists - and those who "stalk stalkers" - he has unearthed accounts of obsession and delusion.

Book excerpt: The Return of the Soldier recounts the return of the shell shocked Captain Chris Baldry from the trenches of the First World War from the perspective of his cousin Jenny. The novel grapples with the soldier's return from World War I with mental trauma and its effects on the family, and sheds light on their fraught relationships. The successful treatment of the traumatised returned soldier is a fundamental element of The Return of the Soldier. Unlike Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway and Dorothy L. Sayers' The Unpleasantness at the Bellona Club, this novel lends certain optimism that the soldier can be reintegrated into society. The novel was adapted into a film of the same name in 1982. Excerpt: "That day its beauty was an affront to me, because, like most Englishwomen of my time, I was wishing for the return of a soldier. Disregarding the national interest and everything else except the keen prehensile gesture of our hearts toward him, I wanted to snatch my Cousin Christopher from the wars and seal him in this green pleasantness his wife and I now looked upon. Of late I had had bad dreams about him. By nights I saw Chris running across the brown rottenness of No-Man's-Land…"
