Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bob and Margaret Wolff celebrated their wedding anniversary six months after their marriage--in case they didn't make it a full year. However, they shared a thirty-one year honeymoon before Bob's tragic accidental death. Alaskan Wolff Pack is Bob and Margaret's story, and the story of the remarkable children, friends, and pets they accumulated along the way. The delights of living in the Alaska bush amidst four legged neighbors, the closeness of sharing a one room cabin in a forty square mile yard, and the adventures of gold mining and travel; could not be dimmed by fires, floods, crashes, or death. They mostly lived from hand to mouth, often without a dime in their pockets, occasionally their material possessions were little more than the clothes on their backs, and the tooth ferry could only leave an IOU note under the children’s pillows--but their real riches were abundantly awesome.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes the fulfilment of my childhood dream of visiting the Straits of Magellan in Argentina. Much later, from 1998 to 1999, my wife Donna and I realized that goal by covering the entire Western Hemisphere from Alaska to Ushuaia, with a detour to Easter Island. From Chicago we drove through Central America to the southern tip of Argentina. We backtracked north to Belem, where our motor home went on a barge for a 1,000-mile trip on the Amazon River to Manaus. We then drove to Venezuela, and while the motor home was freighted to Houston, we flew back to Chicago. In late spring of 1999, we resumed our quest by taking a three-month drive through Alaska. The entire 40,000-mile trek was filled with many exciting moments, spectacular scenery, and wonderful people. It is a testimonial and an encouragement to all RV adventurers around the world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2016 Whistler Independent Book Award finalist. Former homicide investigator Hunter Rayne follows the white lines northward on the Alaska Highway, but a truck breakdown forces him to take an unscheduled stop in Whitehorse, Yukon, where he had been stationed as a rookie cop. While his Freightliner is awaiting repairs, Hunter and fellow driver, Dan (Sorry) Sorenson, kill time with a side trip to bush Alaska where a chance meeting with a young Alaskan woman awakens his interest in a baffling cold case. A reclusive trapper and his young girlfriend disappeared from a bloody cabin 25 years before, leaving their sled dogs chained outside. Reawakened memories of his past coupled with a recent murder find Hunter back in investigative mode with the blessings of Whitehorse RCMP boss Bartholomew Sam, son of a shaman and Hunter's old friend. He finds himself searching the banks of the mighty Yukon River for a tough old bush woman who may hold the key to more than one bloody death. It's a vivid reminder that the breathtaking beauty of the northern wilderness camouflages its brutal indifference to human life. This is the fourth novel in the Highway Mysteries series of character-driven traditional mysteries in a uniquely North American setting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1899, one of America's wealthiest men assembled an interdisciplinary team of experts--many of whom would become legendary in their fields--to join him, entirely at his expense, on a voyage to the largely unknown territory of Alaska. The Harriman Expedition remains unparalleled in its conception and execution. This book follows the team closely: where they went, what they did, and what they learned--including finding early evidence of glacial retreat, assessing the nature and future of Alaska's natural resources, making important scientific discoveries, and collecting an astonishing collection of specimens. A second thread involves the lives and accomplishments of the members of the party, weaving biographical strands into the narrative of the journey and the personal experiences they shared. This is the first comprehensive, scholarly treatment of the Harriman Alaska Expedition since the 1980s. It features the diaries, letters home, and post-Expedition writings, including unpublished autobiographies, generated by the members of the party.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Alaskans in the 1950s demanded an end to "second-class citizenship" of territorial status, southern powerbrokers on Capitol Hill were the primary obstacles. They feared a forty-ninth state would tip the balance of power against segregation, and therefore keeping Alaska out of the Union was simply another means of keeping black children out of white schools. C.W. "Bill" Snedden, the publisher of America's farthest north daily newspaper, the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, helped lead the battle of the Far North against the Deep South. Working behind the scenes with his protege, a young attorney named Ted Stevens, and a fellow Republican newspaperman, Secretary of Interior Fred Seaton, Snedden's "magnificent obsession" would open the door to development of the oil fields at Prudhoe Bay, inspire establishment of the Arctic Wildlife Range (now the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge), and add the forty-ninth star to the flag. Fighting for the Forty-Ninth Star is the story of how the publisher of a little newspaper four thousand miles from Washington, D.C., helped convince Congress that Alaskans should be second-class citizens no more.
