Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written as a book for undergraduate students as well as scholars, Surviving Dictatorship is a work of visual sociology and oral history, and a case study that communicates the lived experience of poverty, repression, and resistance in an authoritarian society: Pinochet’s Chile. It focuses on shantytown women, examining how they join groups to cope with exacerbated impoverishment and targeted repression, and how this leads them into very varied forms of resistance aimed at self-protection, community-building, and mounting an offensive. Drawing on a visual database of shantytown photographs, art, posters, flyers, and bulletins, as well as on interviews, photo elicitation, and archival research, the book is an example of how multiple methods might be successfully employed to examine dictatorship from the perspective of some of the least powerful members of society. It is ideal for courses in social inequalities, poverty, race/class/gender, political sociology, global studies, urban studies, women’s studies, human rights, oral history, and qualitative methods.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A book of hope and healing, Recovering From the Loss of a Sibling is the first book for those who have experienced the death of a brother or sister. It addresses the many questions, fears and feelings of surviving siblings of all ages, such as: Will this soon happen to me? It should have been me. Why wasn't it? God must have punished me for the time when I was so mean to my brother. My sister was my parents' favorite and I don't seem to count to them. At work, they have no idea what I'm going through. They think I'm just a sibling. All the focus is on my parents, not my grief. When a brother or sister dies, surviving siblings may receive little support or even recognition of their pain. Parents are so grief-stricken at the loss of a child that they often find themselves unable to cope with the needs of their surviving children. With family and friends concentrating on the parents?tragedy, the suffering of siblings often goes unnoticed. These intimate, true stories provide valuable insight, demonstrating that the reader is not alone and that others have gone through this devastating experience and have survived. In these pages, sisters and brothers share their innermost feelings, wanting others to gain comfort from their experiences. The book also serves as a compassionate aid to friends, co-workers, teachers, family members, and the helping professions.

Despite ups and downs she slowly became aware of her real purpose in life and learned to use her gifts to improve herself and make a difference in the lives of all of those with whom she came in contact. In 1969 while completing my studies in Canada, I met a man who would eventually become my husband in later years. A year later we separated when I returned to my home country, Trinidad. After a 7-year separation we reunited by a strange series of events and got married in 1977. This is a story of our reunion with some details provided by my husband. It has been a source of wonder and disbelief to all who have heard it over the years. Many of them advised us to write a book and this is the result. My experiences over those seven years seemed incomplete so I decided to include other details of my life both before and after the events that took place over the seven years.

Book excerpt: Hi, my name is Berni, short for Bernice, and I am living on borrowed time. I nearly died in June 1987 and again in September 2009. The reason? Cancer! I am sitting here on the 5th of June 2011 writing this book, yet in August of 2010 I had found a priestess who could give me a pagan funeral and found and asked a dressmaker to make my shroud, I had wanted a full length dress with a hood and gone into town to find the material and been measured. To fall in line with my beliefs, I needed a material that was mainly red and found just what I was looking for, a red and Chinese dragon printed material and had it delivered. I had asked the dressmaker to do the garment by Christmas as I didnt expect to live past Christmas, but was still aiming to go to my sister in law for it. I was looking forward to my Birthday party in October and feeling pretty weak. I was dying of Oesophageal Cancer and I had all the treatment that was available. All I could now do was wait to die. Well I wasnt ready to do that so I was fighting with all I have in me. I thought I was fighting a losing battle but damn I have never given up when it really mattered, so I had no intention of starting now. This is my story and I hope that what is written here will inspire others to fight and win.

No signs of anything wrong viewed by me (his mother). He got up, had a wash and cleaned his teeth and shouted his goodbyes, just like any other day. Suicide is a word that grips you when you see it, more so if you have been affected by it, and the aftermath is horrendous. This is my story of the effects it had and continues to have on myself and my other son. Life is not and cannot be the same again for either of us. The ups and the downs are something we have had to learn to live with, along with the questions that never cease and can never be answered, though I will probably keep looking for some sort of answer until the end of my days. I found that there was not much help out there for us as a family to deal with the aftermath. Although this story is about Steven and written from my insight and views, I hope it will be of some help to anyone starting out on this terrible journey life has thrown at us, even if it’s only to assure you. You are not losing your mind. The things you’re feeling are quite normal for the tragic situation you’ve been left to face. My heart and my love go out to every one of you because this is one group of people that we don’t want to be part of, but unfortunately we have had no choice in the matter. Life does go on, and while we know it will never be the same again, you will learn how to live with this pain and loss.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the South's most illustrious military leaders, Wade Hampton III was for a time the commander of all Lee's cavalry and at the end of the war was the highest-ranking Confederate cavalry officer. Yet for all Hampton's military victories, he also suffered devastating losses in his family and personal life. Rod Andrew's critical biography sheds light on his central role during Reconstruction as a conservative white leader, governor, U.S. senator, and Redeemer; his heroic image in the minds of white southerners; and his positions and apparent contradictions on race and the role of African Americans in the New South. Andrew also shows that Hampton's tragic past explains how he emerged in his own day as a larger-than-life symbol--of national reconciliation as well as southern defiance.
