Book Synopsis From Kaiserreich to Third Reich by : Fritz Fischer
Download or read book From Kaiserreich to Third Reich written by Fritz Fischer and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-26 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in English in 1986, this book offers a concise summary of the contribution Fritz Fischer and his school made to German historiography in the 20th century and in particular draws attention to continuity in the development and power structures of the German Reich between 1871 and 1945. After 1866 the traditional elites wanted to avoid fundamental changes in society, expecting a victorious war to secure their own position at home and to broaden the European base of the German Reich. Even as the Blitzkrieg expectations foundered, these ambitions persisted beyond 1918. In the face of working-class hostility, these elites were unable to mobilize mass support for their interests, but Hitler fashioned a mass party. The alliance between these unequal partners led to the Third Reich but with its collapse in 1945 the Prusso-German Reich came to an end. Only with the German Federal Republic did the liberal-democratic traditions of German history again come into their own.

Book Synopsis German Light Cruisers of World War II by : Gerhard Koop
Download or read book German Light Cruisers of World War II written by Gerhard Koop and published by Seaforth Publishing. This book was released on 2014-07-22 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An immensely interesting look” at the Emden, Königsberg, Karlsruhe, Köln, Leipzig, and Nürnbergships “from drawing board to destiny” (War History Online). The warships of the World War II era German Navy are among the most popular subject in naval history with an almost uncountable number of books devoted to them. However, for a concise but authoritative summary of the design history and careers of the major surface ships it is difficult to beat a series of six volumes written by Gerhard Koop and illustrated by Klaus-Peter Schmolke. Each contains an account of the development of a particular class, a detailed description of the ships, with full technical details, and an outline of their service, heavily illustrated with plans, battle maps and a substantial collection of photographs. These have been out of print for ten years or more and are now much sought after by enthusiasts and collectors, so this new modestly priced reprint of the series will be widely welcomed. This volume is devoted to the six ships from Emden to Nürnberg that were built between the wars. They were primarily intended for commerce-raiding, but the war gave them few opportunities for such employment, although they did provide useful support for key naval operations in the Baltic and North Sea. Two were lost in the 1940 Norway campaign, but the remainder survived for most of the conflict. “A ship-by-ship history of the cruisers. The text is supported by an excellent collection of plans and photographs. Overall this is a very impressive history of a fairly unimpressive set of warships.”—HistoryOfWar.org

Book Synopsis The German Navy in the Nazi Era (RLE Nazi Germany and Holocaust) by : Charles S. Thomas
Download or read book The German Navy in the Nazi Era (RLE Nazi Germany and Holocaust) written by Charles S. Thomas and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-09-01 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German navy's experiences under the Third Reich are explored in depth in this comprehensive history (originally published in 1990) of the Kriegsmarine. The author draws on a wide range of sources to illuminate for the first time the crucial relationship between the naval officer corps, one of the traditional elites of Germany and the National Socialist Party. The book begins by describing the navy's frustrating experiences in the First World War, when inactivity on the part of the surface fleet and poor communication with the other armed services led to a revolutionary atmosphere by 1918. It then analyses the navy's often troubled relationship with the parties of the Weimar Republic and the admirals' fear of subversion by the Germany Communist Party which contributed to their changing relationship with National Socialism before 1933. .
Book Synopsis The Price of Disobedience by : Eric Grove
Download or read book The Price of Disobedience written by Eric Grove and published by US Naval Institute Press. This book was released on 2001 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Naval scholar Eric Grove reassesses the first British naval encounter of World War II - the Battle of the River Plate. In late 1939, a force from the Royal Navy engaged the German battleship Graf Spee, which had been raiding commercial shipping in the southwest Atlantic. Though the Graf Spee was outnumbered, it inflicted serious damage to the British ships before taking refuge in the harbor at Montivideo, Uruguay. Four days later her commander, assuming a much superior force waited for him, scuttled his ship and then committed suicide. This controversial story of risk and naval strategy has been told before, but Grove has unearthed previously unpublished sources to provide a definitive account of the battle and throw new light on the motivation of the Graf Spee's captain. A thought-provoking book, it will attract naval historians and others with an interest in World War II."--BOOK JACKET.Title Summary field provided by Blackwell North America, Inc. All Rights Reserved
Book Synopsis German Panzers 1914–18 by : Steven J. Zaloga
Download or read book German Panzers 1914–18 written by Steven J. Zaloga and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-20 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Panzer warfare is synonymous with the Wehrmacht of World War II. This book examines the story of the Panzer's more mysterious ancestors, the little-known panzers of the Great War. Germany was very slow to develop armored vehicles compared to Britain and France. Efforts to catch-up proved difficult, and only a few dozen German A7V tanks were completed in time to take part in the final campaigns of 1918. As a result, the majority of German panzer units actually used captured British tanks, the Beutepanzer. This book will trace the development of German panzers of the World War One, including the A7V and its intended but unfinished stablemates.
