Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Native American tales of the medicinal sulfur springs found in what is now Lampasas County drew settlers and, later, tourists who sought cures for various ailments throughout the 19th century. The region soon became known as the "Saratoga of the South," and when the first passenger train arrived in Lampasas in 1882, it opened a new market for the local waters. Entrepreneurial citizens capitalized on the springs, building bathhouses, opera houses, and other amenities. In 1884, the Lampasas County Courthouse was built--the third-oldest Texas courthouse still in use today. Vestiges of Lampasas's heyday are found in Hanna Springs and Hancock Park, which remains a thriving recreational area with a free-flow sulfur pool and an 18-hole golf course. Public murals, a sculpture garden, historic sites, and a proud engaged community draw people to Lampasas County today.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Murder hits close to home for a certain werewolf in the latest mystery by USA Today bestselling author Jennifer Blackstream... When a murder investigation starts with a mutilated corpse and a savage, newly-turned werewolf, it's normal to hope things improve from there. But in Shade's experience, it's more likely things will get worse. Much worse. A mutiny is brewing in the local werewolf pack, and a homicide involving a close ally of the alpha—Detective Sergeant Liam Osbourne—is exactly the crack in his armor his enemies have been waiting for. Together with Liam and her FBI partner, Agent Andrew Bradford, Shade will need to stretch her powers to dangerous limits to find the conspirator—not only to prevent another grisly killing, but to halt a campaign of terror reaching far beyond the blood-stained crime scene. Can they solve the case before treason rips Liam's pack in two? The Blood Trails series is a fusion of contemporary fantasy and cozy mystery that combines a classic private investigator/whodunnit with the sarcasm, magic, and pulse-pounding battles that have made the urban fantasy genre so famous. Join a witch detective and her quirky pixie familiar as they take on vampires, werewolves, wizards, sorceresses, and a whole lot more. After all, nothing relieves stress like a little magic, mayhem…and murder. All of my books are written in the same universe (yes, the Blood Trails series is contemporary, not historical like the Blood Prince/Blood Realm series—so you’ll have to read Deadline to find out how I managed that…). Be ready for crossovers and cameos! Download or read book Sharkman Six written by Owen West and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2001-12-18 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Lieutenant Gavin Kelly's recon platoon swims ashore a Mogadishu beach under the glare of hundreds of news camera lights, it is an appropriately surreal beginning to Operation Restore Hope. This modern war is vastly different from the battles Kelly's father and grandfather fought and from the young lieutenant's own experience during Operation Desert Storm. Minutes after the Marines' celebrated landing, one of Kelly's men kills an armed Somali bodyguard. The circumstances of the killing are unclear and Kelly finds himself in the center of a maelstrom. He must act quickly to deflect a vociferous outcry from members of the international press corps, censure by his Marine superiors, and the possibility of losing the loyalty of his men -- particularly two enlisted leaders in the platoon who have vouched for the necessity of the kill. Thus begins Sharkman Six, a stinging morality tale in which Kelly is torn between his men, his confusing mission, and the international rules of engagement he has sworn to uphold. As his platoon descends into the lawless, violent underbelly of Somalia, Lieutenant Kelly must determine his own values -- and allegiances -- in a country where murders are commonplace and constant. With heart-pounding, intricate military detail, rapier wit, and stunning verisimilitude, Sharkman Six speaks to the violent urges lurking in us all and the lengths to which we will go to control them. In Gavin Kelly, West has created an authentic, sympathetic, and wholly compromised young officer of war who will put you in mind of the best of military heroes and antiheroes.

Cathcart, HBCU Experience The Book celebrates the rich legacy and experiences of those who attended HBCUs. This groundbreaking anthology chronicles undergraduate realities, such as dating and relationships, dorm living, road trips, pledging fraternities and sororities, student activism and leadership; athletics and more. "I love the HBCU Experience; there's nothing like it. Most of the people I hired as staff or interns through the years came from an HBCU, and the most prominent icons of the Civil Rights Movement came out of the HBCU Experience; which included stellar leaders like Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Congressman John Lewis, Ambassador Andrew Young, Stokely Carmichael, NAACP Leader Medgar Evers and Actor/Activist Ossie Davis." -Jeff Burns, Jr., Author, "The Brotherhood of Drew Hall" HBCU Experience - The Book is a fulfilling memoir. The book is a legacy to be treasured, with first-person accounts that offer readers an authentic reality as they learn or reminisce. -Jannette L. Dates, Ph.D., Dean Emerita of the Howard University School of Communications; co-editor/primary author of Split Image: African Americans in the Mass Media and co-author of The Obamas and Mass Media: Race, Gender, Religion, and Politics The HBCU culture and history is so rich that it deserves to have its stories told. As a custodian of the HBCU flame, I am thankful we have Tia and Chris to be our lions and this wonderful book to tell our tales." -Michael J. Sorrell, Esq,. President of Paul Quinn College "Capturing the true essence of the HBCU experience is nearly impossible for people who are not HBCU alumni until now. This book is a must-read for alums who want to reflect on the good old days and for high school students considering their college options." - Johnny C. Taylor, Jr., President & CEO of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund
