The result is a poignant reflection on 75 years of life and of love in all its forms. "[Berlin] populates his writing with memories that will break your heart and wisdom disguised as tossed off one-liners. Walk through Berlin's House, flip on the lights room by room, see what he has left there for you and all of us." -Ryan Walsh, author of Astral Weeks: A Secret History of 1968

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvey Potter was a very strange fellow indeed. He was a farmer, but he didn't farm like my daddy did. He farmed a genuine, U.S. Government Inspected Balloon Farm. So begins this enchanting original tall tale. Set in the rural south and populated with a truly unforgettable cast of characters--including, if you look very carefully, a rabbit, a Tyrannosaurus rex, a cat, a chicken, a cow, and a pig hidden in each remarkable illustration--this is a book that is filled with wonderful impossibilities and magical imagination. Told in the great tradition of summer nights and front porch yarns, Harvey Potter's Balloon Farm will lift your spirit right off the ground, just as it does Harvey Potter. Harvey Potter was a very strange fellow indeed. He was a farmer but not like any farmer you've ever met. He didn't grow corn, okra, or tomatoes. Harvey Potter grew balloons. No one knew exactly how he did it, but with the help of the light of a full moon, one friendly child catches a peek of just how Harvey Potter does it. And keeps some magic for herself. "This is the best sort of fantasy imaginative, inventive, and believable. Harvey Potter is a wonder he's the owner of a genuine U.S. Government Inspected Balloon farm. And Nolen's tale about this man, narrated by the African-American girl who learns balloon-farming magic from him, is equally wondrous.... This title should sail onto every library shelf. May Nolen grow a bumper crop of books." School Library Journal. "Downright glorious." Publishers Weekly(starred review).

Book excerpt: This is the unfolding story of a kid born in Liverpool in 1937. David C. Pickard grew up in the 1940s as Adolf Hitler tried to take over the world, often spending nights in a bomb shelter. Hitler failed, but it took England some time to return to a semblance of normal. During the 1950s, Pickard became an apprentice engineer at Cammell Laird & Co, entering the world of shipbuilding, which was defined by extremely low pay. During the 1960s, he worked at Joseph Lucas Hydraulics Division Laboratory, solving a longstanding problem on his very first week on the job. Even though his ingenuity allowed the company to introduce its product on the world stage, he was kicked in the backside, so he resigned and joined Ford Motor Co., Halewood, as a maintenance fitter. Six months later, he was promoted to supervisor. He enjoyed a successful career at a bevy of companies before losing his wife. It wasn’t until a beautiful lady picked him up and dusted him off that he discovered a new lust for life—as well as the thrill of running his own business.

The two Chikombedzi books tell of their more "colorful" years as they raised three children and Paul practiced medicine at the remote and primitive Chikombedzi Mission Hospital in the bush of Rhodesia (now called Zimbabwe). "Chikombedzi II: the adventure continues" is the story of their second term of missionary service from 1963 to 1967. It includes medical adventures, elephant chases, and endless visitors - set against the early turmoil of Zimbabwe's struggle for independence.

Book excerpt: The requirements for placing a military payload (communications relay, electro-optical sensor, etc.) in the sky at short notice are identified. A demonstration aircraft-launched balloon system is proposed and the basic assumptions defined. The balloon size and mass of inflatant to be carried aloft are calculated. Compressed gas and cryogenic storage systems are compared. The weight of storage tank/lift ratio is used to demonstrate the superiority of cryogenic storage. The properties of liquid helium and liquid hydrogen are discussed with respect to safe long term storage. The heat needed to vaporize the cryogens and to warm the resultant inflation gases is calculated. Methods of generating and transferring the required heat at the time of inflation are described.
