And others: nevertheless I am bold to say that in no work on engraving in wood have 1 yet found any signs of choice or sufficient judgment. Good cuts and bad have been confounded together: and exact reproductions made from foul impressions, the ink over the sides of the lines too often supposed to be a portion of the engraving. Book excerpt: Excerpt from J. J. Lankes: Painter-Graver on Wood I first came upon these engravings quite by accident, and was immediately enamoured of them. Perhaps it were more accurate to say, enamoured of the view of wood-engraving their maker holds, though I doubt whether he has ever troubled himself to formulate a conscious point of view. Yet the point of view is there: if it were not, the engravings would not be there. A refreshing thing about these prints is their freedom from the atmosphere of the studios, with its endless suggestions of other men's art. He seems to see without the familiar results of steepage in art atmospheres, and his message is, therefore, not an echo but an original thing born of the contact between the external world and his own fresh mind. A wood-engraving of a linear drawing is done in one of two ways: the block, which before it is engraved at all prints black, may be so cut that the resulting design is a pattern of dark on a ground of light. This is negative engraving, because the incision of the tool simply removes parts of the dark pattern, thus adding the area removed to the negative ground against which the pattern is seen. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A High School Course in Wood Pattern Making This book is the outgrowth of seven years of teaching experience in both Trade and High Schools. The author submits the book on the ground that we can all benefit by the experience of others. Work on Pattern Making are not as numerous as the importance of the subject warrants. The various articles in this book follow each other in what seems, to the author to be the natural sequence. To begin the subject the teacher lectures on The Metal Trades (Chapters I and II), and the manufacture of iron products, so that the pupil can learn exactly what part pattern making plays in the commercial world. Then the wood working exercise in Chapter III should be started. Before beginning it, however the pupils, as a class, should be made to remove the plane bit and sharpen it and learn to replace it correctly. Pupils dislike to take a plane apart until the teacher proves to them that it is a simple operation. While the pupil is working on the exercise, certain periods should be devoted to lectures and recitations on Moulding and Pattern Making, Chapters IV and V, so that these chapters are covered by the time the exercise is finished. Then the student will understand and can begin making the simple patterns in Chapter VI. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. It is not reasonable to suppose that a book of this kind, however full and complete, will take the place of a good teacher, but if for any reason a person desires to make a beginning without a master, he will be enabled to do so by heeding its directions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handcraft in Wood and Metal: A Handbook of Training in Their Practical Working for Teachers, Students,& Craftsmen The general impression in the past has been that any attempt at freehand curves or decoration in models necessarily means neglect of the mechanical side, but this does not follow according to the authors experience, and they would deplore the acceptance of this idea. The main feature of handcraft work after the early stages is individual effort on the part of the pupil, which adds to the interest and value of the subject as a whole. Much has been said upon correlation in handcraft. In well directed handcraft correlation is inevitable. Thinking and doing must perforce be linked together, and when this is done in the class or craft, room it must work toward a better general education. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wood Pattern-Making: A Text Book for the Use of High School, Trade School, Technical School and College Students An experience Of seventeen years in teaching pat tern-making and kindred subjects has made me feel the great need of such a work as this which I now Offer as a textbook for students in technical and manual training schools, and universities. A number Of excel lent books On the subject have been published, to be sure, but most Of them assume on their reader's part previous acquaintance with the fundamental ideas Of pattern-making; such as do treat at all of the element ary part Of the subject, happen to be works Of an exhaustive character, which are consequently too ex pensive for use as textbooks. The present work, therefore, will, it is hoped, find a field Of usefulness for itself. It is Of course to be recognized that as pattern making is an art, it cannot be learned simply by reading any book on the subject, but only by practice. Still a textbook may afford valuable assistance even to the artisan. This work, however, has a further and more important purpose, - that Of imparting to the engineer or the draftsman the fundamental principles Of pattern making. For only as he is in possession of these can he make designs for patterns in accordance with which shopwork can be performed in the most efficient and most economical manner. The reader should also understand that this work, being designed only as an elementary treatise, in no way exhausts the subject. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Fret Cutting and Wood Carving Acting up to his opinion, my father allowed me to buy a handsome allowance of carpenter's tools, and all acces sories, bench, etc., and took care to let me have instruction also; so that, at the age of sixteen, before I entered the army, I was a capital carpenter, and on many occasions during my career in the army in India did my knowledge of carpentry turn to good account. But as an occupation for boys generally, carpentry has several drawbacks. The first is the great expense of tools and bench, etc. Then the Space required. It is not an employment that can be carried into the drawing-room, and during the winter holidays boys are or should be out all day skating, or taking some healthful, active exercise, leaving only the long evenings; so, except on rainy, dull days, they cannot practise their carpentry unless, like myself, they have the use of a good room in an out office. Now, these drawbacks do not apply to wood carving. With very few simple tools most beautiful work can be executed, and a very great deal can be done in the drawing room, on a working board fixed by cramps to any firm table.
