Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the first edition of this book I tried to survey in brief compass the main ideas, methods, and discoveries of rational thermodynamics as it then stood, only five years after Messrs. COLEMAN & NOLL, while in Baltimore, had written the fundamental memoir that provided for the new science the one root theretofore wanting. A survey in the same style today would require an almost wholly new book, three or four times as long. As it was in 1968, again in 1983 a consecutive treatise restricted to the foundations would be premature, for at this moment they are under earnest discussion, probing analysis, and powerful attack by several students and from several directions. Because, although in the first edition I expressed some opinions I no longer hold and made some statements I should now recast or even re tract, it seems even yet to offer a simple introduction to some aspects of the field that remain current, I have chosen to reprint it unaltered except for emendation of slips and bettering of the English here and there.

Book Synopsis Characterization of Liquids, Dispersions, Emulsions, and Porous Materials Using Ultrasound by : Andrei S. Dukhin
Download or read book Characterization of Liquids, Dispersions, Emulsions, and Porous Materials Using Ultrasound written by Andrei S. Dukhin and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-08-08 with total page 592 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Characterization of Liquids, Dispersions, Emulsions and Porous Materials Using Ultrasound, Third Edition, presents a scientific background for novel methods of characterizing homogeneous and heterogeneous liquids (dispersions, emulsions, and gels) as well as porous materials. Homogeneous liquids are characterized in rheological terms, whereas particle-size distribution and zeta potential are parameters of heterogeneous liquids. For porous materials, porosity, pore size, and zeta potential are output characteristics. These methods are based on ultrasound, which opens an opportunity for simplifying the sample preparation by eliminating dilution. This in turn, makes measurements faster, easier, precise, suitable for accurate quality control, PAT, and formulation of complex systems. This book provides theoretical background of acoustics, rheology, colloid science, electrochemistry, and other relevant scientific fields, describing principles of existing instrumentation and, in particular, commercially available instruments. Finally, the book features an extensive list of existing applications. - Presents a theoretical multi-disciplinary background of several new ultrasound analytical techniques in one place - Validates the theoretical basis of several new analytical techniques - Compares the efficiency and applications of various ultrasound techniques - Lists many ultrasound applications in colloid chemistry - Contains an extensive bibliography on this multidisciplinary topic

Book Synopsis Scaling of Structural Strength by : Zdenek P. Bazant
Download or read book Scaling of Structural Strength written by Zdenek P. Bazant and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2005-06-28 with total page 342 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with a leading-edge topic of great interest and importance, exemplifying the relationship between experimental research, material modeling, structural analysis and design. It focuses on the effect of structure size on structural strength and failure behaviour. Bazant's theory has found wide application to all quasibrittle materials, including rocks, ice, modern fiber composites and tough ceramics. The topic of energetic scaling, considered controversial until recently, is finally getting the attention it deserves, mainly as a result of Bazant's pioneering work. In this new edition an extra section of data and new appendices covering twelve new application developments are included. - The first book to show the 'size effect' theory of structure size on strength - Presents the principles and applications of Bazant's pioneering work on structural strength - Revised edition with new material on topics including asymptotic matching, flexural strength of fiber-composite laminates, polymeric foam fractures and the design of reinforced concrete beams
Book Synopsis Scaling of Structural Strength by : Z. P. Bažant
Download or read book Scaling of Structural Strength written by Z. P. Bažant and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Questions of size effect and scaling on the integrity of structures have been around since at least the time of Leonardo da Vinci. Bazant (civil engineering and materials science, Northwestern U.) sketches the history of size effect studies before exploring size effect on fracture and crack mechanics in a number of materials. He explores applications of the known size effect law for the measurement of material fracture properties and the modeling of the size effect by the cohesive crack model, nonlocal finite element models, and discrete element models. Applications to quasibrittle materials, including concrete, fiber composites, sea ice, rocks, and ceramics are presented. The role of size effect in some famous structural catastrophes is then examined. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR.
