Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbooks for Bible Classes: And Private Students I trust that the handbook may be found to have set in a clear light, and before many eyes, one of the noblest histories which the Church of Christ has to tell, that its perusal may bind Irish Presbyterians in firmer allegiance to their grand Old Church, and lead many besides Irish Presbyterians better to understand and appreciate our past history and our present position. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbooks for Bible Classes and Private Students: Church and State, a Historical Handbook I am informed that a re-issue of this small volume is desired. Since the first edition, the question of Church and State has been broadly raised for wales and Scotland. Behind these too there are aspects of that question causing difficulty in England, in Italy, in Russia, and in some other countries. Yet all these are mere fragments of one problem which the Christian world has for two thousand years been working out, on the lines and with the results which the following pages attempt to summarise. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbooks: Bible Classes and Private Students Christianity is in its essential nature remedial; it is not a mere benefit bestowed to increase the wellbeing of men; it is a deliverance, and indeed the only deliverance, from a most terrible and deadly evil; and that evil is, throughout the pages of Revelation, described as having its root and chief part in sin. The founder of Christianity was called Jesus, because He should save His people from their sin; He was hailed as "the Lamb of God, that taketh away the sin of the world;" He declared that He came to call sinners to the kingdom of God; and it is pro claimed as a faithful saying among His disciples "that Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners." Entirely consistent with this are the anticipations and promises of the Old Testament. In the Law, the Prophets, and the Psalms, sin is recognised as the radical and greatest evil from which man needs to be saved. Yet the Bible gives no didactic explanation of what sin is, but from the very outset of its teaching assumes that to be known. Just as the inspired writers do not think it needful to begin with a definition of God or a proof of His existence, as little do they count this necessary in regard to sin. Each volume offers an authoritative and up-to-date survey of original research in a particular subject area. Specially commissioned essays from leading figures in the discipline give critical examinations of the progress and direction of debates. Biblical studies is a highly technical and diverse field. Study of the Bible demands expertise in fields ranging from Archaeology, Egyptology, Assyriology, and Linguistics through textual, historical, and sociological studies to Literary Theory, Feminism, Philosophy, and Theology, to name only some. This authoritative and compelling guide to the discipline will, therefore, be an invaluable reference work for all students and academics who want to explore more fully essential topics in Biblical studies.

Book excerpt: A new version of Kathleen Nielsons acclaimed book that addresses high school students with the aim of encouraging and equipping them to engage in effective study of the Bible. The most crucial way we can prepare young people for the challenges that lie ahead is to arm them well with the sword of the Spirit which is the Word of God. This book lays the foundation: it explains what the Bible is, and what that means for how we should study it. Five fundamental truths are clearly presented: the Bible is God speaking; powerful; understandable; literary; one whole story. From each of these truths come practical implications for why and how we study the Bible along with concrete examples and study questions that lead students in personal application. The goal is for high school students to grow not just in a particular method but in a whole understanding of Gods Word and how to let that Word speak effectively into our lives.
