Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Machine Shop Management The viewpoint selected in preparing this book is a bold departure from that which has governed revious works on shop management. This can be best shown by awing a parallel between machine design and shop-system design. In the field of machine design, we have many excellent handbooks which give fundamental data on the design of machine elements as shafts, bearings, gears, pulleys, clutches, and the like; but we have no book, aside from college text books, which purpose to tell the machine designer how to design a machine. That is, the machine designer uses no book that sketches a method, which begins per haps with the base, builds up the housings for the bearings, fits in the shafts, the driving pulleys, the gearing, and other operating parts to roduce a machine. The reason for this is obvious; the design 0 no two machines can be attacked in identical fashion, but fundamental data on design apply to all. This is the informa tion that the designer needs and seeks. Many books have been written on industrial and shop manage ment, but they have taken the viewpoint that the reader wished to be told how to design a system. The giving of fundamental data on the elements and mechanisms that entered that system has been a secondary consideration. This viewpoint while perhaps proper in the past is wrong today. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Introducing computers into production engineering has drastically reduced the "artisan skill" content traditionally required in manufacturing processes and replaced it with high-precision, computer-controlled machinery. While this reduces human error and variability in output, it does not eliminate the knowledge required of the professional engineering or shop floor worker. On the contrary, the reverse is true. Managers, engineers, and workers still need to understand the fundamentals while they need to acquire other skills. These highly-regarded authors combine more than 150 years of industrial and academic experience and expertise to provide readers with the fundamentals of the subject, from digital manufacturing with CNC machine tools and FMS up to Industry 4.0, emphasizing the increased importance of automated manufacturing based on computerized systems (CAD, CAM, CAQ, etc.). Features This groundbreaking work introduces readers to CNC fundamentals, followed by a number of chapters which explain how different components are applied in practice. This logical approach is extended to the study of CNC and drives, tooling, flexible manufacturing systems (FMS), and finally to NC-programming, DNC, digital manufacturing, Industry 4.0 and computer integrated manufacturing (CIM). Additional chapters cover industrial robots, additive manufacturing, energy-efficient manufacturing, simulation systems, state of the art of machine integrated measuring systems, and using touch probes and laser beams. Explains the functions and connections of all integrated components.

Purchasers can usually download a free scanned copy of the original book (without typos) from the publisher. Not indexed. Not illustrated. 1913 edition. Excerpt: ...A coarse wheel grinds faster than a fine one, but leaves deep scratches in the work. A soft wheel may be made of a much finer grade of emery than a hard one. A soft wheel grinds faster than a hard one, but it is apt to glaze over, or fill up with particles, if used on a soft material. Lubrication. To increase the cutting capacity of an emery wheel, to prevent it from glazing over, and to carry off the heat generated by the friction of the wheel on the work, a stream of water is frequently used, arrangements being made in most machines--particularly in those for grinding tools and for cylindrical grindingfor forcing the stream upon the wheel at the point of contact with the work, by means of a small pump.' For grinding milling cutters, reamers, taps, and similar tools, water is not used.. Table II gives the maximum speeds of carborundum wheels of various diameters. The accuracy of grinding renders the use of fine measuring tools a necessity. The micrometer caliper, especially with the vernier graduation, is best suited for this work. While grinding is the only method of finishing some materials, such as hardened tool steel, and the most accurate way of finishing any kind of stock, its value as an economical method is just beginning to be recognized. The general method of finishing lathe woik has been to take a roughing cut with about T', inch feed, then a finishing cut with about flq inch feed, and then file to remove the tool marks. In the majority of cases it is more economical, as well as more accurate, to take a roughing cut with % inch feed to within 151; inch of the size, and then finish by grinding. In some cases it is possible to get excellent results by grinding to size directly from the bar without previous turning. Lapping...
