Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Homeric Study As the authorities followed are usually referred to in foot-notes it is hardly necessary here to specify fully the obligations I am under to published works. I have, as I hope, made it clear that the most inspiring book I ever read on Homer - it has been like the key to a Sphinx's riddle - was the late Professor Geddes' work, The Problem of the Homeric Poems. I also, naturally, owe much to the various publications on Homer of Dr. Monro, vice-chancellor of the Uni versity of Oxford; to Sir Richard Jebb's Introduction to Homer; and to Professor Percy Gardner's New Chapters in Greek History. I may add that the intro ductory chapters in Professor Bury's new H istory of Greece appear to me to compress much learning into a compact and interesting form. The monumental work, A Companion to Greek Study, just issued by the Syndics of the University Press of Cambridge, would have been of immense benefit to me had it been in my hands before my last sheets were going through the press, when I could barely avail myself of its wonderful wealth of learning. Although on quite differ ent lines, my Scheme of Approximate Chronology of the Poems was first suggested by Mr. H. R. Hall's very useful Scheme of Mycenaean Chronology. Book excerpt: This volume is the first English-language survey of Homeric studies to appear for more than a generation, and the first such work to attempt to cover all fields comprehensively. Thirty leading scholars from Europe and America provide short, authoritative overviews of the state of knowledge and current controversies in the many specialist divisions in Homeric studies. The chapters pay equal attention to literary, mythological, linguistic, historical, and archaeological topics, ranging from such long-established problems as the "Homeric Question" to newer issues like the relevance of narratology and computer-assisted quantification. The collection, the third publication in Brill's handbook series, The Classical Tradition, will be valuable at every level of study - from the general student of literature to the Homeric specialist seeking a general understanding of the latest developments across the whole range of Homeric scholarship.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biography is one of the most widespread literary genres worldwide. Biographies and autobiographies of actors, politicians, Nobel Prize winners, and other famous figures have never been more prominent in book shops and publishers' catalogues. This Handbook offers a wide-ranging, multi-authored survey on biography in Antiquity from its earliest representatives to Late Antiquity. It aims to be a broad introduction and a reference tool on the one hand, and to move significantly beyond the state-of-the-art on the other. To this end, it addresses conceptual questions about this sprawling genre, offers both in-depth readings of key texts and diachronic studies, and deals with the reception of ancient biography across multiple eras up to the present day. In addition, it takes a wide approach to the concept of ancient biography by examining biographical depictions in different textual and visual media (epigraphy, sculpture, architecture) and by providing outlines of biographical developments in ancient and late antique cultures other than Graeco-Roman. Highly accessible, this book aims at a broad audience ranging from specialists to newcomers in the field. Chapters provide English translations of ancient (and modern) terminology and citations. In addition, all individual chapters are concluded by a section containing suggestions for further reading on their specific topic.
