Book excerpt: Excerpt from Power and Health Through Progressive Exercise It must not be thought, however, that this book deals wholly with heavy gymnastics, weight-lifting, and feats of strength. Many light exercises are given as being valuable to promote elasticity and suppleness; and, in addi tion to these, - as an apprenticeship of mode rate exercises is absolutely necessary in order that one may become capable of the simplest exhibition of force, - many intermediate exer cises are carefully described, and their effects discussed. The effects of common indoor and outdoor athletic sports and exercises are gone into. All which, it is hoped, will make this volume a complete manual of physical culture, suitable alike for those boys and girls, men and women, who may wish, without the aid of a teacher, to make the best of their bodies. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual for Physical Culture and Muscular Development Stand facing machine [see cut] pulling both hands, first into right side then into left side as shown in cut. May be done twenty times each way. When pulling into left side you develop muscle of right arm from palm of hand following therefrom down forearm to inner part of bicep to pectoral muscle and up left forearm and back part of upper arm to the trapezium. When pulling to right side the muscles taken are reversed on each arm. Heretofore I have quoted this as a sparring motion although it does not take in the exact muscles used in sparring, for you must turn sideways to strike an effective blow in sparring, and furthermore the muscles must be loose to strike properly, which condition can not be attained in this motion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Exercises in Physical Training, Vol. 1 Since those who do the actual teaching are the ones who should understand the needs and conditions best, all the members of the Physical Training Department were called in conference. This book embodies many features suggested by their experience. It is only when we attain correct and energetic execution on the part of the pupils, when teachers and pupils alike have grasped the purpose of each exercise, so as to be able to detect and correct faulty execution, that we may hope for those results which alone justify teaching this subject. In order that the greatest possible good may accrue to the pupils, the teachers must thoroughly acquaint themselves with the subject matter. The Instructions to Teachers, the descriptions of the exercises, the manner of giving commands, as well as the lessons which are to be given, must be carefully studied. Teachers must also observe closely the work of the special teachers, and learn the best methods of giving a gymnastic lesson. In this way they will learn to use to the best possible advantage the limited time allowed this subject. The lessons must be memorized so that they can be given without reference to the book. There must be a regular time in the daily program for the exercises, and at this time the complete lesson should be given. The conditions under which the work is conducted in the regular class room are not altogether favorable. For this reason the success of the lesson will depend largely upon the attitude of the class teacher. The fidelity and faithful cooperation of the teachers and those in charge of the schools will determine the results attained. This manual contains fifty lessons, each of which is intended to be for two weeks. Each grade will use twenty lessons, as follows. This book was released on 2024-04-02 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The classic handbook on home schooling updated for a new generation of parents and students. Is your child getting lost in the system, becoming bored, losing his or her natural eagerness to learn? If so, it may be time to take charge of your child’s education by doing it yourself The Well-Trained Mind will instruct you, step by step, on how to give your child an academically rigorous, comprehensive education from preschool through high school—one that will train him or her to read, to think, to understand, to be well-rounded and curious about learning. Veteran home educator Susan Wise Bauer outlines the classical pattern of education called the trivium, which organizes learning around the maturing capacity of the child’s mind and comprises three stages: the elementary school “grammar stage,” when the building blocks of information are absorbed through memorization and rules; the middle school “logic stage,” in which the student begins to think more analytically; and the high-school “rhetoric stage,” where the student learns to write and speak with force and originality. Using this theory as your model, you’ll be able to instruct your child—whether full-time or as a supplement to classroom education—in all levels of reading, writing, history, geography, mathematics, science, foreign languages, rhetoric, logic, art, and music, regardless of your own aptitude in those subjects. A new optional Resource Recommendations Portal provides subscribers with curated lists of the best curricula for every grade level and learning style. Thousands of parents have already used the methods described in The Well-Trained Mind to create a truly superior education for children in their care. You do have control over what and how your child learns. The Well-Trained Mind will give you the tools you’ll need to teach your child with confidence and success.
