For the readers, the Sinai covenant was the only relevant conceptual competitor to Christ. First-century Jews looked to the Abrahamic and Mosaic covenants as the basis of their obligations to God and God's promises toward them. Although most Jewish writers merged these covenants as if they were one, the author of Hebrews does not--he retains the Abrahamic promises while arguing that the Mosaic covenant is obsolete. The covenant concept supports the exhortations of Hebrews in two ways: 1) it provides the link between priesthood, worship rituals, and other laws, and 2) it enables the author to argue for allegiance to the community as allegiance to Christ.

On one hand, the apostle seems sincere as he gives thanks for God’s gifting of the church. On the other hand, it can be hard to trust Paul’s sincerity when the very things mentioned (e.g., “speech” and “knowledge”) will later be associated with Paul’s rebuke of the church. This book clarifies the apostle’s intent. A look at rhetorical ornamentation from Paul’s world reveals that he is using one of the most popular rhetorical figures of his day, called emphasis. The figure allows Paul to give thanks genuinely while implicitly chiding his audience through various hints. These hints prepare for every major section of the letter and the rebukes contained within them. Intriguingly, the only two comparable thanksgivings in the letter (1:14–16; 14:18–19) also employ emphasis. These passages all reveal a subtlety that is at once sincere, critical, and even humorous. They reveal that Paul is “thanking God emphatically.”

Book excerpt: In the age of the Theodosian dynasty and the establishment of Christianity as the only legitimate religion of the Roman Empire, few figures are more pivotal in the power politics of the Christian church than archbishop Theophilus of Alexandria (385-412). This work examines the involvement of archbishop Theophilus in the so-called First Origenist Controversy when the famed third-century Greek theologian Origen received, a century and a half after his death, a formal condemnation for heresy. Modern scholars have been successful in removing the majority of the charges which Theophilus laid on Origen as not giving a fair representation of his thought. Yet no sufficient explanation has been offered as to why what to us appears as an obvious miscarriage of justice came to be accepted, or why it was needed in the first place. Kratsu Banev offers a sustained argument for the value of a rhetorically informed methodology with which to analyse Theophilus' anti-Origenist Festal Letters. He highlights that the wide circulation and overt rhetorical composition of these letters allow for a new reading of these key documents as a form of 'mass-media' unique for its time. The discussion is built on a detailed examination of two key ingredients in the pastoral polemic of the archbishop - masterly use of late-antique rhetorical conventions, and in-depth knowledge of monastic spirituality - both of which were vital for securing the eventual acceptance of Origen's condemnation. Dr Banev's fresh approach reveals that Theophilus' campaign formed part of a consistent policy aimed at harnessing the intellectual energy of the ascetic movement to serve the wider needs of the church.
