Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Chemical Engineering Volume 2 covers the properties of particulate systems, including the character of individual particles and their behaviour in fluids. Sedimentation of particles, both singly and at high concentrations, flow in packed and fluidised beads and filtration are then examined. The latter part of the book deals with separation processes, such as distillation and gas absorption, which illustrate applications of the fundamental principles of mass transfer introduced in Chemical Engineering Volume 1. In conclusion, several techniques of growing importance - adsorption, ion exchange, chromatographic and membrane separations, and process intensification - are described. A logical progression of chemical engineering concepts, volume 2 builds on fundamental principles contained in Chemical Engineering volume 1 and these volumes are fully cross-referenced Reflects the growth in complexity and stature of chemical engineering over the last few years Supported with further reading at the end of each chapter and graded problems at the end of the book

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Chemical Engineering, Vol. 2 of 2: Prepared by a Staff of Specialists Before proceeding to outline briefly the various heating methods employed in bringing about high temperature melting or reactions, we shall refer in a few words to the subject Of refractories for high-melting-point containers. High-temperature Refractories - Our choice of materials is very limited especially for temperature work in excess of 2,000c. Of the various refractories readily obtainable, lime, magnesia and alumina are the most serviceable basic ones at temperatures up to about The purer these oxides the higher their melting points. In laboratory tests thoria crucibles have given very satis factory results at temperatures as high as 2,400c. Alth'ough pure tungsten melts at crucibles made from this metal, unless constructed with very heavy walls, show marked tendency to collapse at about 2,800c. In those cases where carbon does not readily combine with the substance to be heated, commercially pure graphite crucibles or supports are serviceable up to tempera tures Of about 3,000c. The life Of these graphite crucibles at these elevated temperatures is however comparatively short since the amorphous carbon binder. Used in the manufacture Of the crucible rapidly loses its binding qualities as the graphitization temperature is approached. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Handbook of Air Pollution Prevention and Control provides a concise overview of the latest technologies for managing industrial air pollution in petrochemical, oil and gas, and allied industries. Detailed material on equipment selection, sizing, and troubleshooting operations is provided along with practical design methodology. Unique to this volume are discussions and information on energy-efficient technologies and approaches to implementing environmental cost accounting measures.Included in the text are sidebar discussions, questions for thinking and discussing, recommended resources for the reader (including Web sites), and a comprehensive glossary. The Handbook of Air Pollution Prevention and Control also includes free access to US EPA's air dispersion model SCREEN3. Detailed examples on the application of this important software to analyzing air dispersion from industrial processes and point sources are provided in the Handbook, along with approaches to applying this important tool in developing approaches to pollution prevention and in selecting control technologies. By applying SCREEN3, along with the examples given in the Handbook, the user can: evaluate the impact of processes and operations to air quality, and apply the model to assess emergency scenarios to help in planning, to develop environmental impact assessments, to select pollution control technologies, and to develop strategies for pollution prevention. Two companion books by Cheremisinoff are available:Handbook of Water and Wastewater Treatment Technologies, and Handbook of Solid Waste Management and Waste Minimization Technologies. Uniquely combines prevention and control concepts while covering the practices and technologies that are applied to the prevention of air pollution in the chemicals manufacturing, oil and gas, iron and steel, and pharmaceutical industries, and to the cleaning and control of industrial air emissions. Provides a bridge for today's environmental manager by focusing on an integrated approach to managing air pollution problems within industrial operations. Shows you how to calculate financial returns from pollution prevention projects.
