Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Manual of Quantitative Chemical Analysis: For the Use of Students The system adopted is to teach at first the determination, indi vidually, of the constituents of compounds, composed of elements which will afterward, very frequently, be found variously asso ointed, particularly in mineral analysis; and then to teach the quantitative separation of these elements, in the analysis of com pounds containing a number of them; advancing, step by step, from the analysis of compounds of similar character to the analysis of more complicated ones, involving a knowledge and application of what has preceded. In addition to the series of what may be called strictly mineral have been added a number of analyses of substances of an organic character, found in commerce, which will give the student an insight into the work which will probably be required of him as a practical chemist. The range of these is necessarily restricted, as it is desired to keep the work within the limits of a simple handbook. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Mineralogy, Geology, and Mineral Analysis, Vol. 1 of 2 The work which I now offer to the public, is the result of a laborious investigation which has occupied almost the whole of my spare time during a period of about ten years. The object in view, was to ascertain the chemical constitution of the different minerals which occur on the surface of the globe. For this purpose, I subjected to a rigid analysis every species that I could procure, except those which had been already investigated with sufficient accuracy by other chemists. During the course of this investigation, I analyzed several hundred specimens, and at least as many more were subjected to analysis by the numerous pupils who attended my laboratory, not a few of whom acquired great dexterity and accuracy in analysis, and have already, or speedily will distinguish themselves as analytical chemists. During these investigations, I met with a considerable number of new species hitherto overlooked by mineralogists, chiefly in specimens from Ireland, North America, and the West of Scotland, These new species, amounting to nearly 50, will be found described in the first volume of this work. Every true mineral species is a chemical compound, the constituents of which are united in definite proportions, and the greater number of them consist but of a very few ingredients. What makes it difficult or impossible to determine these ingredients with the requisite accuracy, is, that very few minerals are free from a mixture of foreign matter interspersed among their particles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of the Chemical Analysis of Rocks It is therefore evident that we possess in chemical analysis a means of investigation that complements, and is Of value fully commensurate with, the study of rocks in the field or with the microscope. That this is generally recognized is shown by the increasing prominence given to chemical analyses in recent petrological and petrographical papers, as well as in publica tions Of an economic character. It is also shown by the attention given to this study by official organizations, and by the growing number of those who make, or who desire to make, analyses of rocks. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual of Mineralogy, or the Natural History of the Mineral Kingdom: Containing a General Introduction to the Science, and Descriptions of the Separate Species, Including the More Recent Discoveries and Chemical Analyses In a work of such extent, containing so many numbers, and in which almost every word expresses a definite fact, errors can scarcely be avoided. The Author has endeavoured to diminish their number by careful and repeated revision, and trusts that those overlooked may be found comparatively few, and not such as to interfere with the utility of the volume. He would gladly hope that, with all its defects, the work may in some measure aid in promoting the study of this branch of science, and in extending the knowledge of those wonders of Creative Wisdom with which the Mineral Kingdom, like every other portion of Nature, so richly abounds. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Systematic Mineral Record: With a Synopsis of Terms and Chemical Reactions Used in Describing Minerals; Prepared for Instructors and Students in Mineralogy The established value of the various Plant Records in the study of Botany, first suggested to the writer the use of a printed Mineral Analysis, which he has used in his classes for four years, and with such success as, seemingly, to justify placing it before a larger public than it has hitherto served. The Tables presented in this little work are a slight amplification of what he believes to have been the first Mineral Analysis ever published. It is hoped that this schedule will prove useful in training the student to habits of thorough observation and correct methods of reasoning, while, used in connection with some good work on Determinative Mineralogy, it will become the means, not only of gaining familiarity with a very practical department of knowledge, but of providing him with valuable mental drill. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Geology and Mineralogy: With Instructions for the Qualitative Analysis of Minerals This work was undertaken, and had in part appeared in the pages of a periodical publication, when there was rather a dearth of elementary treatises on geology, and before so many had been sent forth by some of the first geologists of the age, that to add to their number may perhaps appear superfluous, if not presumptuous. Its extension and publication, in a separate form, has been determined on, because it is hoped that it differs sufficiently in its plan from any of its predecessors, to render it a humble but useful auxiliary to works which it does not aspire to supersede. It has been said that a man may be too consummate a mineralogist to make a good geologist, or, in other words, that the constant study of minute details, necessary for the discrimination of individual minerals, unfits the mind for the apprehension of the sublime generalizations of geology; but, on the other hand, it is no less true, that a certain amount of mineralogical knowledge is an essential requisite to the successful study of that science. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Introduction to the Study of Minerals: A Combined Text-Book and Pocket Manual This work is intended primarily as a text-book for a one-year course in mineralogy. While full enough for class work it is condensed enough for field work. There is decided advantage in using the same book in the field as in the class room and laboratory. The author's aim has been to produce a Well-balanced book covering the whole field of mineralogy as far as is practicable; and one in which the practical methods of identifying. Minerals, the economic features, and the scientific aspects of mineralogy as a means of correlating hundreds of isolated facts, are all given their proper emphasis. The only way to bring out the important and essential points is to omit the great mass of details which are properly included in the reference books. Two hundred minerals have been included in the descriptions (part V I). These have been selected with great care, although the list is necessarily an arbitrary one based upon the writer's experience and judgment. All the common minerals and the more important useful ones are included in the two hundred. Others have been selected for practice in testing and also to give a comprehensive view of the mineral kingdom. In most miner alogical text-books brief descriptions of some of the rare minerals are given. In the writer's Opinion this is not advisable, for one needs a full description of a rare mineral in order to identify it.
