Keyser and Thomas Cochran, Relative to a Public Park for Philadelphia; Published in 1856 and 1872 The first of the two papers here reprinted was issued from the press in 18 56, at a period when, what is now the great Park of Philadelphia, was a succession of dilapidated mansions and fields, in the last stages of decay and neglect. It at once secured, by its enthusiasm and broad prescience of the value of the ground to the City, attention, interest, and the liberal contribution from our citizens which secured part of, and eventuated in the final purchase of the whole traot by the city, and its public dedication. The second appeared in 1872, when a determined effort was being made to obtain adverse legislation under the plea that it was too large, it' was. Costing too much, it was a rich man's park, and it was inaccessible. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Pocket Guide and Street Directory of Philadelphia: With Descriptive Sketches and Illustrations of Fairmount Park, Centennial Buildings, and Other Places and Objects of Interest, and a Large Map of the City Philadelphia was planned and settled by William Penn, accompanied by a colony of English Friends or Quakers, in 1682, after a regular pur chase from the Indians ratified by a treaty in due form. The name of Phila delphia (brotherly Love) was given by William Penn, in part as an embodiment of the principles he intended to carry out in its settlement, and which are a part of the Creed of the Society of Friends, and partly after the ancient city of that name, whose church is spoken of in the book of Revelation. The city rapidly increased, and in three years after the first settlement was made, the population was 2500. In 1771 it was incorporated as a city. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bulletin of the Pennsylvania Museum: Memorial Hall, Fairmount Park, Philadelphia A fine specimen of seventeenth century Spanish wood sculpture, painted in polychrome and gilt on gesso, spread over carved walnut, has been acquired recently by the Pennsylvania Museum. The group represents the Madonna and Child receiving the homage of the Magi. One of the latter is kneeling at her feet kissing the foot of the Holy Child; one is standing by her side on.her right, holding in his hands a golden cruet, and the outline of his form marks, to the right, the outline of the group. On the other side must have stood the third, of the Magi whose figure, however, is entirely missing. The block of walnut here has been cut off short, leaving that end of the group unfinished, although it is coated with red color, quite unlike the base which is delicately decorated in finest polychrome and gilt design on gesso. The specimen is said to be of the seventeenth century; it may be earlier. It is two feet ten inches in height, by two feet in width in its present condition. The figures are half life size. But for the missing figure, it is well preserved; and the rich polychrome elaborated in gold, and the general treatment of the figures, are characteristic of the Spanish method of the time. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Magee's: A Guide and Description to All Places of Interest in or About Philadelphia, to the Centennial Grounds and Buildings, and Fairmount Park; Illustrated Guide of Philadelphia and the Centennial Exhibition Less than half a century ago, the above couplet was the familiar rhyme to express the bounds of our old city north and south, and the regularly built up districts did not extend far above or below these lines. Now Philadelphia reaches to Alleghany avenue, No. 3200 north, and to Hartranft street. No. 3400 on the south, and from the Delaware river east to Cobb's creek, the Delaware county line on the west; forming an area of 82,603 acres, or 129 square miles, thus giving to Philadelphia the largest area of any city in the world. Philadelphia was founded by the illustrious William Penn in the year 1682. The euphonious name, so characteristic of the leader of the fraternity of "Friends," he derived from that of a city in Asia-Minor, and which in the Greek means "Brotherly Love." The first landing of William Penn on the site of his future city, was what was then known as the "Blue Anchor Landing," near to which stood the Blue Anchor Tavern, and what is now Front and Dock streets.
