Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electro-Therapeutic Guide This little work is intended as a guide or aid to the correct use of electricity in the hands of the general practitioner. A physician who is obliged to cover the entire field of medical and surgical practice cannot be expected to keep in mind all the little details of electro-therapeutic practice. The guide has been arranged in this form that a busy practitioner may see at a glance the methods of application in any desired case. We believe that this guide will save much time and insure a more scientific and successful use of electricity in the hands of the average physician. In following out the treatments outlined in this work any intelligent physician will take into consideration the age and sex of the patient, individual idiosyncracies, etc. No originality is claimed by the author in the methods of treatments given. The general rules given and the methods of treatment advised are in accord with the best electro-therapeutists. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Essentials of Modern Electro-Therapeutics: An Elementary Text-Book on the Scientific Therapeutic Use of Electricity and Radiant Energy F int - Many consider electro-therapy as a Special school or form of sectarianism and avoid it as irregular practice. Second. - The extravagant claims of quacks and misguided enthusiasts, and the unscientific character of many of the articles on electro-therapeutics which have appeared in con temporary medical journals, have disgusted many of the more conservative members of the profession. Third - The absence of a simple and reliable elementary text-book has been the greatest, and in some cases, the only reason for the exclusion of electro-therapeutics from the curricula of medical schools. In the present age there is a tendency toward proliferation, both in the number and Size of books, while this book is different, in that it is the aim and intent of the author and editor, to concentrate ideas, and con dense words, in order to save both time and energy, SO that the busy oper ator may get the proper know how, both quickly and accurately. It Is not expected that this work Will take the place of text books, or displace a course of lessons, on the subject of electro-therapeutics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Clinical Electro-Therapeutics, Medical and Surgical: A Hand-Book for Physicians in the Treatment of Nervous and Other Diseases Thales, who lived six centuries before Christ, knew that, when amber was rubbed with silk, it acquired the property of attracting light bodies, but not till several hundred years after ward was it known that other substances possessed a like quality; and these were sulphur, wax, glass, etc. Dr. Gilbert, . Physician to Queen Elizabeth, was the demonstrator of these ficts. In the year 1789 contact electricity was discovered by Galvani, and in the year 1831 induction electricity was given to the world by Faraday. When a glass rod or stick of sealing-wax is rubbed with a piece of flannel or fur, it will be found to have acquired the power to attract some very light body - for instance, a pith-ball. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Electrotherapeutics It has been our experience that the knowledge required by the student of medicine concerning electricity and its relation to animal economy is best acquired by the labora tory method. By that method of instruction each princi ple is impressed upon the mind through several separate paths of the sense perception and a manual dexterity is acquired which is essential to success in therapeutic appli cations. This has been the plan adopted for teaching electro therapeutics at the University of Michigan. Every formof electric modality that has any distinctive physiological or therapeutic effect is studied in the laboratory as to its methods of generation, control'and application to the patient. We believe this to be the only practical way for imparting the kind of instruction required for the practice of electro-therapeutics, but in our attempts to develop a naturally progressive and at the same time complete and consistent course of laboratory instruction we have found it a thing of slow growth. This laboratory manual is the final result of our various trials and experiences and while we do not claim for it either perfection in the arrangement of matter or completeness in detail, we feel that the time has come for putting our plan in a form that will permit for it a wider usefulness as well as gain for it the intelligent criticism of the experienced workers in the field which it seeks to cultivate. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Student's Manual of Electro-Therapeutics, Vol. 5 This little book is presented to the medical public, chiefly as a protest against the mysticism and charlatanry which have ever hung around the literature and practice of electro-therapeutics. As our scientific knowledge of other therapeutic procedures developed, they gradually escaped from the thraldom of quackery. Not so with electricity. Its showiness, its instantaneous and startling physiological effects, and its name, popularly synonymous with life, have long and will long continue to make it a fashionable remedy, a cure-all for imaginary diseases, a popular placebo, a gold mine for charlatans and symptom-treating physicians, who let their patients make the diagnosis and suggest the treatment. Never does the question, "Was my patient cured or did he get well?" About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Handbook of Electrotherapy for Practitioners and Students About twenty-five thousand physicians in the United States employ electricity as a therapeutic agent, many of whom have in their possession some form of electrical apparatus. Owing to the fact that few medical colleges include electrotherapeutics in their curriculum, little opportunity is given medical men to become familiar with modem methods of its application, and many fail to secure favorable results because proper instruction is not available. This work is intended to give practical instruction covering the indications and use of the various currents in practice; the subjects treated, in the main, are briefly considered, but up to date. An effort has been made to boil down the subject of electrotherapy and to treat it in a manner that it may be understood and made useful not only to every electrotherapist but to the entire medical profession. Electricity has no magic formulas, but is an efficient helpmate in the practice of medicine. The bibliography at the close of the book is not complete. It is impossible to render full acknowledgment to all sources which have assisted me in preparing this work. However, I am indebted to many writers whose articles have appeared from time to time during the past ten years in the American Journal of Electrotherapeutics and Radiology. I fully realize that the subject of electrotherapeutics has not been fully elucidated, but an effort has been made to point out the essentials that they may be of assistance to those who employ electricity as a therapeutic agent in medicine. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electro-Diagnosis and Electro-Therapeutics: A Guide for Practitioners and Students I take great pleasure in recommending this guide to electro-diagnosis and electro-therapeutics. For a number of years my colleague, Dr. Cohn, has supplemented my lectures by giving my hearers practical instruction in electro-diagnosis and electro-therapeutics. This book had its origin in that instruction. I have had manifold opportunities to observe the work of Dr. Cohn, and have noted the interest and enthusiasm of the students in his courses, as well as the excellent practical results of the instruction. Therefore, because this book has specially in View the interests of the beginner and of the practical student, and because it presents only the important facts in an easily intelligible form, I do not doubt that it answers a practical need, and will win and maintain a place for itself, notwithstanding the numerous and excellent works in this special line. I cordially wish the respected author the best of suc cess. E. Mendel. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
