This authoritative lexicon is much more than a dictionary. It includes historical and linguistic information on botany and medicine throughout each volume.
Book Synopsis Janakiharana of Kumaradasa by : C. R. Swaminathan
Download or read book Janakiharana of Kumaradasa written by C. R. Swaminathan and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 2000-12 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Janakiharana of Kumaradasa is the first Sanskrit Mahakavya, so far as the extant literature goes, to deal solely with the whole of the Ramayana-story. Its further interest is that it was produced in Ceylon, showing thereby the wider world over which Sanskrit had its sway. After manuscripts of the full text of the poem in twenty cantos had to come to light in South India, what is now presented was the first systematic and critical study to be undertaken to the author and the text and its position vis-a-vis other Mahakavyas. In addition to the above study and the critical edition of the cantos which were at that time unpublished, the book offers an examination of the large number of extra-verses found in some MSS of the text and showing them as interpolations.

Book Synopsis Dictionary Of British And Irish Botanists And Horticulturists Including plant collectors, flower painters and garden designers by : Ray Desmond
Download or read book Dictionary Of British And Irish Botanists And Horticulturists Including plant collectors, flower painters and garden designers written by Ray Desmond and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1994-02-25 with total page 876 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past four centuries botanists and gardeners in the British Isles have gathered, maintained and propagated many varying species of plants. Their work has been documented in innumerable books and articles which are often difficult to trace. The Dictionary of British and Irish Botanists and Horticulturalists represents a time-saving reference source for those who wish to discover more about the lives and achievements of the horticulturalists listed. The dictionary's utility comes not only from indicating the major publications of the named authors, but also the location of their herbaria and manuscripts.; The previous 1977 edition of the Dictionary has for many years been a much used source of information for botanists, botanic artists and archivists. In this revised edition the scope has been expanded to include among its 13,000 entries flower painters in addition to botanical artists over 1400 entries and, for the first time, garden designers.; Finally the Dictionary should have international appeal since so many botanists and gardeners worked on collective plants overseas, in particular in North America and the British Commonwealth.; Each entry gives, wherever possible, details of dates and places of birth and death, educational qualifications, professional posts, honours and awards, publications, location of plant collections, manuscripts, drawings and portraits. Its main function, however, is to provide further biographical references to books and periodicals. Comprehensive classified indices facilitate access by professions and activities, countries, and plant interests.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A renowned worker on Indian medicinal plants, Dr. K.R. Kirtikar of Indian Military Service also worked on poisonous plants and his findings were published in a series of papers I-XX in Journal of Bombay Natural History Society under the title ``The Poisonous Plants of Bombay'' during 1892-1904. The early volumes of the Journal of Bombay Natural History Society are rare and not available in Libraries. Therefore, we have compiled these papers and presented in a book form for easy reference. Colour plates published by Dr. Kirtikar have not been included due to brittleness of the paper and a few being not available, probably damaged due to brittleness. Figures of these plants are available in many botanical books. This compilation is very useful to persons of medical profession, pharmacologists, and botanists working on medicinal and poisonous plants.

Download or read book Medicinal Orchids of Asia written by Eng Soon Teoh and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique book brings together a wealth of data on the botanical, ethno-medicinal and pharmacological aspects of over 500 species of Asian medicinal orchids. It starts off by explaining the role and limitations of complimentary and herbal medicines, and how traditional Asian medicine differs from Western, “scientific” medicine. The different Asian medical traditions are described, as well as their modes of preparing herbal remedies. The core of the book presents individual medicinal orchid species arranged by genera. Each species is identified by its official botanical name, synonyms, and local names. Its distribution, habitat and flowering season, uses and pharmacology are described. An overview sums up the research findings on all species within each genus. Clinical observations are discussed whenever available, and possible therapeutic applications are highlighted. The book closes with chapters on the conservation of medicinal orchids and on the role of randomized clinical trials.
