Book excerpt: In the elegant isolation of a Victorian mansion in Cape May, New Jersey, Autumn Thackeray, the once proud heiress of a once proud family, learns that she is "ill-suited to service." Her family's fortune diminished, she has taken a position as a companion to the mother of Cain Byron, a complex and ungracious young gentleman who is accustomed to giving orders and expecting them to obeyed without question, especially by the women of his household. His temper is infamous, and his domineering and masterful ways dictated by his upbringing and his social status. But Autumn has been reared by open-minded and generous parents; she will not be intimidated by Cain's tyrannical manner. And she will not be seduced by his attraction to her. She will be no man's "light o' love."

Book excerpt: Marine Insurance: Law and Practice, Second Edition, continues to provide the most comprehensive and integrated account of the English law and practice of marine insurance. It provides readers with a fresh and up-to-date review of the modern law in the light of traditional principles and rules of underlying commercial law, and the specific statutory rules of marine insurance as interpreted by case law, as moderated in practice by market practices and standard form marine insurance clauses. Francis Rose clarifies the law’s underlying framework of principles and illustrates how it works in common contractual situations, explaining how the different components of the law interact. The new edition has been updated to incorporate: • the most recent case law: there have been some very important judgments handed down since the book first published, including: The Cendor MOP, The Silva, The Resolute and The Marina Iris • the implications of the introduction of: Institute Cargo Clauses 2009, the effect of the Gambling Act 2005 and the Third Parties (Rights Against Insurers) Act 2010 Law Commission reform proposals The book explores in detail the following areas: • the nature of insurance • insurable interest • the insurance contract • the premium • insured risks • marine risks • exclusions • losses • claims • subrogation • double insurance

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a follow-up to the successful Politics of Usability, this book deals with the ways in which HCI experts apply their knowledge within the pressured environment of the modern organisation. Quite apart from the need to provide a good usability service with little time or money, most HCI practitioners also have to deal with the day-to-day concerns of funding, budgets, project and people management, teamwork, communication and the promotion of HCI ideas. How to achieve this and still find new ways to make modern technology more usable is the central message of this book. The text offers a unique perspective on usability by concentrating on real situations and focuses on practical, workable approaches to professional duties rather than complicated systems of rules.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A defense of the social operation of thinking, with an emphasis on testimony and authority. This book describes a lost tradition that can be called reasonableness. The tradition began with Aristotle, was recommended to Western education by Augustine, flourished in the schools of the Renaissance through the nineteenth century, then got lost in the academic and philosophic shuffles of the twentieth century. Representative of the tradition is John Locke''s story of a King of Siam who rejected reports of the existence of ice. The King would have hadto risk too much trust in another man whom he did not know too well -- a Dutch ambassador -- in order to believe that elephants could walk on cold water. John Locke presented the story to encourage his readers to think about theresponsibilities and risks entailed in what he called ''the gentle and fair ways of information.'' The art of thinking is largely social. Popular textbook writers such as Quintilian, Boethius, Philipp Melanchthon, John of St.Thomas, Antoine Arnauld, Thomas Reid, Isaac Watts, Richard Whately, William Hamilton, L. Susan Stebbings, and Max Black taught strategies of belief, trust, assent, and even submission as part of reasonableness. For over two thousand years testimony and authority were at the center of lively discussions about teaching the art of thinking. In the twentieth century the tradition faltered largely due to Immanuel Kant''s insistence that there should be no distinction between handling testimony and personal experience. This book recounts the history of a lively educational tradition and hopes to encourage its revival. Rick Kennedy, whose previous books and articles have beenabout Colonial American logic, mathematics, and science, is Professor of History at Point Loma Nazarene University. Hamilton, L. Book excerpt: In Singer of Souls, young Douglas fled his American life of drugs and petty crime, arriving in Scotland to be taken in by his stern but fair-minded grandmother. Unfortunately, his career as a busker was interrupted by the fey folk who invisibly share Edinburgh's streets, who dragged him into their own internecine wars. Now Douglas, usurper, sits on the throne of Faery--holding the Queen and the land hostage with his all-powerful magic and his unflinchingly loyal lieutenant, Martes. Meanwhile, in Western Massachusetts, a strange infant is left on the doorstep of an ex-marine who may have the second sight. And in Scotland, the granddaughter of a murdered woman sifts through clues trying to prove her brother isn't the killer...
