Book excerpt: There is good evidence that most of the baryons in the Universe are dark and some evidence that most of the matter in the Universe is nonbaryonic with cold dark matter (cdm) being a promising possibility. We discuss expectations for the abundance of baryons and cdm in the halo of our galaxy and locally. We show that in plausible cdm models the local density of cdm is at least $10{̂-25}\gcmm3$. We also discuss what one can learn about the the local cdm density from microlensing of stars in the LMC by dark stars in the halo and, based upon a suite of reasonable two-component halo models, conclude that microlensing is not a sensitive probe of the local cdm density.

Book excerpt: This volume contains the talks presented at the International Workshop on Aspects of Dark Matter in Astro- and Particle Physics (DARK '96). It provides a thorough presentation and discussion of the topic of dark matter, which currently seems to be one of the most exciting problems of modern physics, in the perspectives of different disciplines like astronomy, astrophysics, cosmology and particle physics. The lectures and talks range from astronomical evidence in galaxies and galaxy clusters, recent information provided by X rays (ROSAT satellite) and by observation of MACHOs, to early universe and particle physics solutions to the dark matter problem, including simultaneous solutions to the problems of baryogenesis and dark matter. Beyond the favoured supersymmetric candidates, the more exotic dark matter proposals are also discussed. The experimental section examines the most recent efforts in direct and indirect experiments, including new techniques like cryogenic detectors and superheated droplet detectors, as well as efforts with large scale underground detectors like MACRO, Baksan, Baikal and AMANDA. Also, the potential of present and future (LHC) high energy accelerators is thoroughly discussed. A section on hot dark matter gives the current status of experiments searching for a neutrino mass, like double beta decay and neutrino oscillation experiments, including intermediate scale long baseline experiments.

Book excerpt: There is general agreement among astrophysicists that most of the matter in the universe is dark, but a wide divergence of views about what this dark matter is. This volume addresses the problem of detecting and identifying dark matter candidates from axions to black holes. Although theoretical issues are considered, the focus of the book is on observational and experimental techniques, current results and future prospects.

Hence it is of critical importance now not just to pursue further evidence for its existence but rather to identify what the dark matter is. Assessment of progress in this area was the objective of the first International Workshop on the Identification of Dark Matter, in particular to consider what techniques, both observational and experimental, are currently being used, how successful they are now and what new techniques will improve the prospects of identifying the likely candidates. The meeting included reviews on major particle astrophysics topics in dark matter but was largely devoted to short contributed talks on new work in the field. This book is the written proceedings of the meeting.

Book excerpt: Flat cosmology with collisionless cold dark matter (CDM) and cosmological constant ([Lambda]CDM cosmology) may have some problems on small scales, even though it has been very successful on large scales. We study the effect of Self-Interacting Dark Matter (SIDM) hypothesis on the density profiles of halos. Collisionless CDM predicts cuspy density profiles toward the center, while observations of low mass galaxies prefer cored profiles. SIDM was proposed by Spergel & Steinhardt [161] as a possible solution to this cuspy profile problem on low-mass scales. On the other hand, observations and collisionless CDM agree on mass scales of galaxy clusters. It is also known that the SIDM hypothesis would contradict with X-ray and gravitational lensing observations of cluster of galaxies, if the cross section were too large. Our final goal is to find the range of SIDM scattering cross section models that are consistent with those astrophysical observations in two different mass scales. There are two theoretical approaches to compute the effect of self-interacting scattering -- Gravitational N-body simulation with Monte Carlo scattering and conducting fluid model; those two approaches, however, had not been confirmed to agree with each other. We first show that two methods are in reasonable agreement with each other for both isolated halos and for halos with realistic mass assembly history in an expanding [Lambda]CDM universe; the value of cross section necessary to have a maximally relaxed low-density core in [Lambda]CDM is in mutual agreement. We then develop a semianalytic model that predicts the time evolution of SIDM halo. Our semianalytic relaxation model enables us to understand how a SIDM halo would relax to a cored profile, and obtain an ensemble of SIDM halos from collisionless simulations with reasonable computational resources. We apply the semianalytic relaxation model to CDM halos, and compare the resulting statistical distribution of SIDM halos with astrophysical observations. We show that there exists a range of scattering cross sections that simultaneously solve the cuspy core problem on low-mass scales and satisfy the galaxy cluster observations. We also present that other potential conflicts between [Lambda]CDM and observations could be resolved in Part II and III.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Our Galaxy, the Milky way, is surrounded by a dark matter spherical halo. This halo is not homogeneous, indeed it has substructure. Bound dark matter substructure, "subhalos", are dark matter dynamic clumps with a roughly spherical shape. A promising indirect way to detect dark matter subhalos in our Galaxy is the phenomenon of microlensing. When a distant star's light path goes through the proximity of a heavy astronomical object, the path "bends" and the star appears to be in a different position. As the substructure is constantly moving, the distant star's image will move as well, which in fact is a signature of astronomic microlensing by dark matter subhalos. This thesis studies how gravitational microlensing can contribute to search of dark matter. The first chapter depicts the current picture of dark matter. Some of the most compelling pieces of evidence for the existence of dark matter are explained. We present the characteristics of dark matter candidates and focus on a specific candidate, the Weakly Interacting Massive Particle. We also describe the dark matter distribution and substructure in the Milky Way. Finally, we outline two current approaches to detect dark matter. In the second chapter, we derive an equation for the deflection angle that a galactic subhalo induces in the light path of a distant source. This equation is used to make predictions for the microlensing signature of possible dark matter subhalos. The third chapter is devoted to the analysis of the relationships between the deflection angle and the parameters involved in a microlensing event. As an input we use the subhalos created in the N-body simulation \texttt{Via Lactea}. From the analysis we deduce under which conditions microlensing events are more likely to be observed. Chapter 4 introduces the topic of dark matter detection from its particles' annihilation. Dark matter subhalos can be detected from the standard model products of the annihilations, e.g., photons. Gravitational microlensing can be used to crosscheck whether the subhalo candidates found are indeed dark matter. This chapter reviews the theory of dark matter annihilation into photons. Also, we reconstructed a whole sky map with dark matter contribution to the electromagnetic background radiation. In chapter 5 we make predictions for the microlensing signatures that actual subhalo candidates can induce. Subhalo candidates are found using two techniques, the Non-Poissonian Template Fitting and looking for spatially extended sources with emission only in the gamma-rays. For both techniques we explain the underlying physics behind the respective approach, describe the process of subhalo candidates selection, relate the subhalos' information obtained from those techniques with the subhalo properties needed to calculate the deflection angle and finally, make predictions for possible microlensing events induced by the subhalo candidates under consideration. The last chapter summarizes the important points of this thesis and proposes a detection strategy to observe microlensing events. We also describe the Gaia mission as it has the instruments needed to measure these microlensing signatures."

Book excerpt: This book contains written versions of the presentations made at the 4th International Workshop on the Identification of Dark Matter (IDM 2002), held in York, UK, in September 2002. The objective of this workshop series is to assess the status of work attempting to identify what constitutes dark matter — in particular, to consider the techniques being used, how successful they are, and what new techniques are likely to improve prospects for identifying likely dark matter candidates in the future. At IDM 2002 special emphasis was placed on recent results obtained in searches for baryonic and non-baryonic dark matter. The proceedings include reviews of major topics on dark matter, as well as short contributed talks.

Book excerpt: Measuring the masses of galaxies as a function of redshift is perhaps one of the most challenging open issues in current astronomical research. The evolution of the baryonic and dark matter components of galaxies is not only a critical test of the hierarchical formation paradigm, but ultimately also provides new clues on the complex interplay between star formation, the cooling and heating of gas and galaxy merging processes. This book reviews current techniques to measure the baryonic (stellar) and dark masses of nearby galaxies, and focusses on ongoing attempts to measure theses same quantities in galaxies at higher and higher redshifts. It also gives room to future perspectives, with special emphasis on new survey projects and satellite missions.
