She was also about to have the encounter of her lifetime. Keely's story unfolds in the summertime of 1929 in Southern Illinois, in the tiny rural town of Dupo. Her father works for the railroad, and her mother runs a small café and confectionary. Keely is the oldest child of four, all born into a loving, hardworking Irish family. The Great Depression is looming, which is guaranteed to make their lives worse, but they make the best of bad situations by calling on their love for one another, their faith, and their many skills to overcome what they'll need to survive. Although the family lives in poverty, they have a rich life knowing they are blessed no matter their hardships. Keely has also recently bloomed from a child mature beyond her years into a colorful young woman who unexpectedly meets a handsome, naïve boy from the city when he enters the café. The young man, William Benjamin O'Malley, finds sanctuary among the McLaughlins. Keely and Will cannot deny their immediate attraction to one another, which is obvious to all. Her father deems Keely and Will's young love forbidden. An act of Will's tenderness toward her family cements Keely's love for him, which also turns her father's fears and dislike for Will into admiration and acceptance. He ultimately approves of Keely's relationship with Will, especially since it was revealed that Will too, has a secret of his own, which will take him far away from Keely. Each time Will leaves Keely to travel home to St. Louis, he promises that he will come back to her. Keely in return, promises she'll wait for him without question. Full of love and coupled with unfulfilled desires as teenagers when they bid each other their final farewells; they vow to reunite one day. Years later, Will surprises Keely with a visit. The sparks continue to fly between them. Their ensuing love story will come at a huge price that neither of them could have ever imagined. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of God went to the daughters of men, and had children by them." - Genesis 6:4 Who were the "sons of God"? They were angels, and they mated with human females ("daughters of men") to create a hybrid race of angel-humans (the Nephilim), some of whom are reputed to be still alive in the present day. What is sex with angels like? It's said that once you go angel, you never go back to human. Is having sex with angels dangerous? Is there any truth behind the rumor that angels are obsessed with women's hair, as St. Paul suggested? Is sex with angels the purest sex, or the dirtiest? This book explores the entire context of having sex with angels. Via Dante's Divine Comedy - which describes an epic journey through hell, purgatory and paradise - a formula is provided for how you might simulate having sex with angels. Could you literally undergo a metamorphosis and become an angel: a son, or daughter, of God?

Book excerpt: Randy Lee Eickhoff continues his translation of the Ulster Cycle, often referred to as the Red Branch Cycle, the large corpus of work that is primarily responsible for establishing the cultural identity of today's Ireland. In this collection of Ireland's famous myths, Eickhoff once again proves his mastery of translation and his ability to give these classic tales new life. Here he presents more than twenty stories that reveal ancient Irish culture as it's seldom been seen before. All of the characters of Irish myth receive new life and are presented in vibrant and unique ways. In addition, by providing introductions to the tales, Eickhoff gives insight into the legends that formed the identity of a people. In the pre-Christian era, when warriors fought from chariots, Druids provided the mystical answers to the universe, and men and women believed strongly in magic, these stories begin. Prepare to enter Randy Lee Eickhoff's Ireland.
Download or read book Going to Pieces written by Adam Rockoff and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2011-11-04 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Carpenter's Halloween, released on October 25, 1978, marked the beginning of the horror film's most colorful, controversial, and successful offshoot--the slasher film. Loved by fans and reviled by critics for its iconic psychopaths, gory special effects, brainless teenagers in peril, and more than a bit of soft-core sex, the slasher film secured its legacy as a cultural phenomenon and continues to be popular today. This work traces the evolution of the slasher film from 1978 when it was a fledgling genre, through the early 1980s when it was one of the most profitable and prolific genres in Hollywood, on to its decline in popularity around 1986. An introduction provides a brief history of the Grand Guignol, the pre-cinema forerunner of the slasher film, films such as Psycho and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, and cinematic trends that gave rise to the slasher film. Also explained are the slasher film's characteristics, conventions, and cinematic devices, such as the "final girl," the omnipotent killer, the relationship between sex and death, the significant date or setting, and the point-of-view of the killer. The chapters that follow are devoted to the years 1978 through 1986 and analyze significant films from each year. The Toolbox Murders, When a Stranger Calls, the Friday the 13th movies, My Bloody Valentine, The Slumber Party Massacre, Psycho II, and April Fool's Day are among those analyzed. The late 90s resurrection of slasher films, as seen in Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer, is also explored, as well as the future direction of slasher films.

Book Synopsis Traditionalists, Muslims, and Christians in Africa by : Prince Sorie Conteh
Download or read book Traditionalists, Muslims, and Christians in Africa written by Prince Sorie Conteh and published by Cambria Press. This book was released on 2009 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As is the case for most of sub-Saharan Africa, African Traditional Religion (ATR) is the indigenous religion of Sierra Leone. When the early forebears and later progenitors of Islam and Christianity arrived, they met Sierra Leone indigenes with a remarkable knowledge of God and a structured religious system. Successive Muslim clerics, traders, and missionaries were respectful of and sensitive to the culture and religion of the indigenes who accommodated them and offered them hospitality. This approach resulted in a syncretistic brand of Islam. In contrast, most Christian missionaries adopted an exclusive and insensitive approach to African culture and religiosity. Christianity, especially Protestantism, demanded a complete abandonment of African culture and religion, and a total dedication to Christianity. This attitude is continued by some indigenous clerics and religious leaders to such an extent that Sierra Leone Indigenous Religion (SLIR) and its practitioners continue to be marginalised in Sierra Leone's interreligious dialogue and cooperation. Although the indigenes of Sierra Leone were and continue to be hospitable to Islam and Christianity, and in spite of the fact that SLIR shares affinity with Islam and Christianity in many theological and practical issues, and even though there are many Muslims and Christians who still hold on to traditional spirituality and culture, Muslim and Christian leaders of these immigrant religions are reluctant to include Traditionalists in interfaith issues in the country. The formation and constitution of the Inter-Religious Council of Sierra Leone (IRCSL), which has local and international recognition, did not include ATR. These considerations, then, beg the following questions: - Why have Muslim and Christian leaders long marginalized ATR, its practices, and practitioners from interfaith dialogue and cooperation in Sierra Leone? - What is lacking in ATR that continues to prevent practitioners of Christianity and Islam from officially involving Traditionalists in the socioreligious development of the country? This book investigates the reasons for the exclusion of ATR from interreligious dialogue/cooperation and ATR's relevance and place in the socioreligious landscape of Sierra Leone and the rest of the world. It also discusses possible ways for ATR's inclusion in the ongoing interfaith dialogue and cooperation in the country; this is important because people living side by side meet and interact personally and communally on a regular basis. As such, they share common resources; communal benefits; and the joys, crises, and sorrows of life. The social and cultural interaction and cooperation involved in this dialogue of life are what compel people to fully understand the worldviews of their neighbours and to seek out better relationships with them. Most of the extant books and courses about interreligious encounters and dialogue deal primarily with the interaction between two or more of the major world religions: Christianity, Islam, Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Sikhism. This book fills a gap in the study of interreligious dialogue in Africa by taking into consideration the place and relevance of ATR in interreligious dialogue and cooperation in Sierra Leone. It provides the reader with basic knowledge of ATR, Islam, and Christianity in their Sierra Leonean contexts, and of interfaith encounters and dialogue among the three major faith traditions in Africa. As such, it provides for the first time a historical, chronological, and comparative study of interreligious encounters and dialogue among Traditionalists, Muslims, and Christians in Sierra Leone. Traditionalists, Muslims, and Christians in Africa is an important reference for scholars, researchers, religious leaders, missionaries, and all who are interested in interfaith cooperation and dialogue, especially among all three of Africa's major living religions-ATR, Islam, and Christianity.

Book Synopsis Charles Williams and his Contemporaries by : Richard Sturch
Download or read book Charles Williams and his Contemporaries written by Richard Sturch and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2009-10-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Williams (1886-1945), poet, novelist, critic, biographer, lay theologian, and 'Inkling'; exercised a great influence, both as a personality and through his writings, on English letters in his own day; and now, after a period of relative neglect, interest in him has grown once more. This international symposium, a product of this revival, is presented as a contribution to the serious study of Williams and his work. Its contents reflect not only the extraordinarily wide range of his writing, but also the many contacts he made both personally and through his work at the Oxford University Press. Contributors look at his literary background and context, describe the part he played in introducing Kierkegaard to the English-speaking public, discuss his theology of love, and compare his work with that of friends, disciples and associates. Two papers concentrate specifically on one of his remarkable novels, The Place of the Lion. Between them, they give a glimpse, or a series of glimpses, of an unusual man and a fascinating writer whose influence and importance are being recognized more and more.
Download or read book Russell Kirk written by Bradley J. Birzer and published by University Press of Kentucky. This book was released on 2015-11-09 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging from two decades of the Great Depression and the New Deal and facing the rise of radical ideologies abroad, the American Right seemed beaten, broken, and adrift in the early 1950s. Although conservative luminaries such as T. S. Eliot, William F. Buckley Jr., Leo Strauss, and Eric Voegelin all published important works at this time, none of their writings would match the influence of Russell Kirk's 1953 masterpiece The Conservative Mind. This seminal book became the intellectual touchstone for a reinvigorated movement and began a sea change in Americans' attitudes toward traditionalism. In Russell Kirk, Bradley J. Birzer investigates the life and work of the man known as the founder of postwar conservatism in America. Drawing on papers and diaries that have only recently become available to the public, Birzer presents a thorough exploration of Kirk's intellectual roots and development. The first to examine the theorist's prolific writings on literature and culture, this magisterial study illuminates Kirk's lasting influence on figures such as T. S. Eliot, William F. Buckley Jr., and Senator Barry Goldwater -- who persuaded a reluctant Kirk to participate in his campaign for the presidency in 1964. While several books examine the evolution of postwar conservatism and libertarianism, surprisingly few works explore Kirk's life and thought in detail. This engaging biography not only offers a fresh and thorough assessment of one of America's most influential thinkers but also reasserts his humane vision in an increasingly inhumane time.
