Book Synopsis A Social History of Ottoman Istanbul by : Ebru Boyar
Download or read book A Social History of Ottoman Istanbul written by Ebru Boyar and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-04-15 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a wealth of contemporary Ottoman sources, this book recreates the social history of Istanbul, a huge, cosmopolitan metropolis and imperial capital of the Ottoman Empire. Seat of the Sultan and an opulent international emporium, Istanbul was also a city of violence shaken regularly by natural disasters and by the turmoil of sultanic politics and violent revolt. Its inhabitants, entertained by imperial festivities and cared for by the great pious foundations which touched every aspect of their lives, also amused themselves in the numerous pleasure gardens and the many public baths of the city. While the book is focused on Istanbul, it presents a broad picture of Ottoman society, how it was structured and how it developed and transformed across four centuries. As such, the book offers an exciting alternative to the more traditional histories of the Ottoman Empire.
Download or read book Missing Reels written by Harry Waldman and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the first half of this century, motion pictures were often considered disposable once their circulations were over. The recycling of used film and the use of components for war efforts contributed to the loss of many movies, as did the unstable nature of the nitrate film itself. The loss of extant works has created gaps in the national cinematic history of the United States and most European countries. Eighty percent of all Western-made films produced before World War I are considered lost, while 15 percent of the films made from 1930 to 1950 are also missing. Here are descriptions of nearly 1,000 of the lost American and European films produced between 1900 and 1950, featuring the talents of the still famous as well as the now obscure. The films are arranged by country and reveal the remarkably prolific early filmmaking in countries like the Netherlands and Sweden. Each entry includes production information, cast, synopsis, history, and insights from reviews when available. Photographs from these films provide glimpses of what once was. An extensive index is included.

Download or read book September 11 Fiction of Matrix written by Faruk Arslan and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2005-08-01 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I was inspired by Hollywood movie in giving a name to this book. Matrix is the name of a fake world which is believed to be fictitious. September 11 was a starting point which differentiates between those who resist and those who don't and between those who believe and those who don't. I agree with war on terrorism, blame all kind of terrorist and terror acts, but I disagree with the fiction of Matrix. Absolutely, Al Qaeda is a terrorist organization and Laden is the mastermind of terrorism. Thank you Canada. I am proud of being Canadian, otherwise I would not feel free to write this book in US. Download or read book Eyewitnessing written by Peter Burke and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 2006-01-27 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eyewitnessing evaluates the place of images among other kinds of historical evidence. By reviewing the many varieties of images by region, period and medium, and looking at the pragmatic uses of images (e.g. the Bayeux Tapestry, an engraving of a printing press, a reconstruction of a building), Peter Burke sheds light on our assumption that these practical uses are 'reflections' of specific historical meanings and influences. He also shows how this assumption can be problematic. Traditional art historians have depended on two types of analysis when dealing with visual imagery: iconography and iconology. Burke describes and evaluates these approaches, concluding that they are insufficient. Focusing instead on the medium as message and on the social contexts and uses of images, he discusses both religious images and political ones, also looking at images in advertising and as commodities. Ultimately, Burke's purpose is to show how iconographic and post-iconographic methods – psychoanalysis, semiotics, viewer response, deconstruction – are both useful and problematic to contemporary historians.
