Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A daughter’s inspiring biography of her father, who lost his sight in a massive maritime disaster—and went on to build a rewarding life and career. Eric Davidson was a beautiful, fair-haired toddler when the historic Halifax Explosion struck, devastating the Nova Scotia capital and killing almost two thousand people while seriously injuring thousands more. Eric lost both eyes—a tragedy that his mother never fully recovered from. Eric, however, was positive and energetic. He also developed a fascination with cars and how they worked—and he later decided, against all likelihood, to become a mechanic. Assisted by his brothers, who read to him from manuals, he worked hard, passed examinations, and carved out a decades-long career. This is the true story of his remarkable life and relentless determination, as told by his daughter.

Download or read book Insights in Sound written by David Baker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-03-27 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music has long been a way in which visually impaired people could gain financial independence, excel at a highly-valued skill, or simply enjoy musical participation. Existing literature on visual impairment and music includes perspectives from the social history of music, ethnomusicology, child development and areas of music psychology, music therapy, special educational needs, and music education, as well as more popular biographical texts on famous musicians. But there has been relatively little sociological research bringing together the views and experiences of visually impaired musicians themselves across the life course. Insights in Sound: Visually Impaired Musicians’ Lives and Learning aims to increase knowledge and understanding both within and beyond this multifaceted group. Through an international survey combined with life-history interviews, a vivid picture is drawn of how visually impaired musicians approach and conceive their musical activities, with detailed illustrations of the particular opportunities and challenges faced by a variety of individuals. Baker and Green look beyond affiliation with particular musical styles, genres, instruments or practices. All 'levels' are included: from adult beginners to those who have returned to music-making after a gap; and from 'regular' amateur and professional musicians, to some who are extraordinarily 'elite' or 'successful'. Themes surrounding education, training, and informal learning; notation and ear playing; digital technologies; and issues around disability, identity, opportunity, marginality, discrimination, despair, fulfilment, and joy surfaced, as the authors set out to discover, analyse, and share insights into the worlds of these musicians.

Book excerpt: In his memoir, Present into Past: My Journey through Darkness and Light, Dennis McCormack shares anecdotes and poems that describe his time as a student at the Halifax School for the Blind and his later work at the Atlantic Braille Press and the Canadian National Institute for the Blind—with the hope of helping others find contentment and reach their potential. By offering essays that illustrate McCormack’s own life lessons, he provides a stepping stone for anyone ready to embark on their own journey to discovering happiness. McCormack begins with the story of how he entered the Halifax School for the Blind in September 1953, where, for the next thirteen years, he would study in an environment where teachers and students did not allow anyone to blame failure on their visual difficulties. As he progresses through his compelling life story, including the founding of the Atlantic Braille Press and marrying his soul mate, McCormack provides insight into how faith, love, and determination helped him find his way from the darkest days to the light. Present into Past: My Journey through Darkness and Light is a poignant memoir sharing the lesson that love is our birthright and that our true destiny is happiness.
