Hons./M.Sc. students of the various Universities. I have compelled all the questions asked so far in different universities as well as C.C.S. University Meerut. I have arranged the subject matter in a continuous manner. Special emphasis has been laid on fundamental concept of the topics. Care has been taken to make the treatment of the subject simple and accessible to the average students. The gradation of the solved and unsolved questions has been facilitated from simple to difficult. It is believed that the book in the present form will be found to be useful by the student community and the teaching fraternity alike. Book excerpt: This volume of the Handbook is the second of a three-volume set of reviews devoted to the interrelationships, similarities, differences, and contrasts of the lanthanide and actinide series of elements. In particular this book considers the comparisons of the chemistry of the lanthanide and actinide elements. The lanthanide and actinide elements present a multitude of challenging physical and chemical problems resulting from the involvement of open F-shell electronic configurations. This is made clear in the chapters composing these volumes which cover topics such as: the experimental and theoretical aspects of solution absorption and luminescence spectra to reveal similarities and differences in the two f-series; the methods and effectiveness of separation by solvent extraction, ion exchange and necessary accompanying reactions; the comparative thermochemical and oxidation-reduction properties of lanthanide and actinide materials; interrelationships and comparisons of the halides; an examination of the relative hydration and hydrolysis behaviors of the lanthanides and actinides.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LANTHANIDE AND ACTINIDE CHEMISTRY Lanthanides and actinides, also known as “f elements,” are a group of metals which share certain important properties and aspects of electronic structure. They have a huge range of applications in the production of electronic devices, magnets, superconductors, fuel cells, sensors, and more. The cursory treatment of these important metals in most inorganic chemistry textbooks makes a book-length treatment essential. Since 2006, Lanthanide and Actinide Chemistry has met this need with a thorough, accessible overview. With in-depth accounts of the lanthanides, actinides, and transactinides, this book is ideal for both undergraduate and postgraduate students in inorganic chemistry or chemical engineering courses. Now updated to reflect groundbreaking recent research, this promises to continue as the essential introductory volume on the subject. Readers of the second edition of Lanthanide and Actinide Chemistry will also find: New and expanded subject areas including lanthanide enzymes, single-molecule magnets, luminescence and upconversion, organometallic and coordination chemistry; and many more. Up-to-date information on the myriad modern applications of f-elements Lists of objectives and learning goals at the start of each chapter Lanthanide and Actinide Chemistry is ideal for advanced undergraduates and graduate students in f-element chemistry, inorganic chemistry, or any related field. INORGANIC CHEMISTRY ADVANCED TEXTBOOK This series reflects the pivotal role of modern inorganic and physical chemistry in a whole range of emerging areas, such as materials chemistry, green chemistry and bioinorganic chemistry, as well as providing a solid grounding in established areas such as solid state chemistry, coordination chemistry, main group chemistry and physical inorganic chemistry.

Book excerpt: This research effort was concerned almost entirely with the first two members of the actinide series, thorium and uranium, although the work was later extended to some aspects of the neptunium-fluorine system in a collaborative program with Los Alamos National Laboratory. Detailed information about the lighter actinides will be helpful in modeling the properties of the heavier actinide compounds, which will be much more difficult to study experimentally. In this program, thermochemical information was obtained from high temperature equilibrium measurements made by effusion-beam mass spectrometry and by effusion-pressure techniques. Data were derived primarily from second-law analysis so as to avoid potential errors in third-law calculations resulting from uncertainties in spectroscopic and molecular constants. This approach has the additional advantage of yielding reaction entropies that can be checked for consistency with various molecular constant assignments for the species involved. In the U-F, U-Cl, and U-Br systems, all of the gaseous species UX, UX2, UX3, UX4, and UX5, where X represents the halogen, were identified and characterized; the corresponding species ThX, ThX2, ThX3, and ThX4 were studied in the Th-F, Th-Cl, and Th-Br systems. A number of oxyhalide species in the systems U-0-F, U-0-Cl, Th-0-F, and Th-O-Cl were studied thermochemically. Additionally, the sublimation thermodynamics of NpF4(s) and NpO2F2(s) were studied by mass spectrometry.
