Book excerpt: "If you enjoy reading puerile literature, this is for you." Cheech and Chong meet Harry Potter in this parody for all the Potterheads out there by L. Henry Dowell!!! Hairy Pothead the Stoned Sorcerer is an easy read, because let's face it, most of you who will be reading this book have probably smoked yourselves daft by now, anyway. On his 30th birthday, the stoner known as Hairy Pothead receives a somewhat delayed invitation to attend the Hawgsleg School of Wizardry and Herbology. While there, he meets a wacky group of misfits including a gentle giant named Groovius Haggard, the dark and disturbing Professor Rape and Bumbling Dumbass, the lovable old Headmaster of Hawgsleg. Of course, he also meets the two people destined to become his bestest friends, Red Measley and Hornie Stranger. Little do any of them know that an evil power is hiding in their very midst. "WHO?" That's right! "WHO?" Exactly! It's the villainous King Owl Jr.! But what does he want with dear old Hairy Please Note: This parody is NOT for children NOR prudish sorts! (And especially not for prudish sorts of children!!!) Also Note: This book contains a handy British slang guide in the back at no extra charge to you, gentle reader!

Book excerpt: 'The Drama of the Forests' is a romance-adventure novel by Arthur Heming. It is set on the outer end of a distant point a cluster of poplars shaded a small, clapboarded log house. There, in charge of Fort Consolation, lived the Factor of the Hudson's Bay Company. Beyond a little lawn enclosed by a picket fence stood the large storehouse. The lower floor of this was used as a trading room; the upper story served as a fur loft. Behind were seen a number of shanties, then another large building in which dog-sleds and great birch-bark canoes were stored. Farther away was a long open shed, under which those big canoes were built, then a few small huts where the half-breeds lived. With the exception of the Factor's house, all the buildings were of rough-hewn logs plastered with clay. Around the sweeping bend of the bay was a village of tepees in which the Indian fur hunters and their families spend their midsummer. Crowning a knoll in the rear stood a quaint little church with a small tin spire glistening in the sun, and capped by a cross that spread its tiny arms to heaven. On the hill in the background the time-worn pines swayed their shaggy heads and softly whispered to that, the first gentle touch of civilization in the wilderness.

Book excerpt: Richard Clark, the narrator of this sharp and sometimes madcap novel is nineteen--a drug-addicted, foul-mouthed, sex-crazed young man in Africa on a safari with his parents. Obviously, this is a mistake. As Richard smolders with resentment, he documents the trip in a series of journal entries that are funny, sad, and piercingly insightful. Juxtaposed with the hostile environment, the tense situation becomes explosive: with raw energy and acuity, somewhere between Hunter S. Thompson and David Sedaris, we see Mom going insane, Dad drinking compulsively, and Richard busy getting high on smuggled drugs. Anything can happen, and it does, in this family travelogue for the twenty-first century.

Book excerpt: Susan Shumsky is a successful author in the human potential field. But in the 1970s, in India, the Swiss Alps, and elsewhere, she served on the personal staff of the most famous guru of the 20th century—Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. Maharishi died in 2008 at age ninety, but his influence endures through the spiritual movement he founded: TM (Transcendental Meditation). Other books have been written about him, but this spellbinding page-turner offers a rare insider's view of life with the guru, including the time the Beatles studied at his feet in Rishikesh, India, and wrote dozens of songs under his influence. Both inspirational and disturbing, Maharishi and Me illuminates Susan's two decades living in Maharishi's ashrams, where she grew from a painfully shy teenage seeker into a spiritually aware teacher and author. It features behind-the-scenes, myth-busting stories, and over 100 photos of Maharishi and his celebrity disciples (the Beatles, Deepak Chopra, Mia Farrow, Beach Boys, and many more). Susan's candid, honest portrayal draws back the curtain on her shattering, extreme emotional seesaws of heaven and hell at her guru's hands. This compelling, haunting memoir will continue to challenge readers long after they turn its last page. It dismantles all previous beliefs about the spiritual path and how spiritual masters are supposed to behave. Susan shares: “Merely by being in his presence, we disciples entered an utterly timeless place and rapturous feeling, and, at the same time, realized the utter futility and insanity of the mundane world.” Susan's heartfelt masterwork blends her experiences, exacting research, artistically descriptive and humorous writing, emotional intelligence, and intensely personal inner exploration into a feast for thought and contemplation. Neither starry-eyed nor antagonistic, it captures, from a balanced viewpoint, the essence of life in an ashram.

Book excerpt: Based upon a collection of true stories. What does it take to be The President of the United States? What kind of person? THE FOUR PRESIDENTS examines these questions as it looks at the lives and characters of four of the most colorful personalities to hold the office. Much of the dialogue comes from the Presidents' own words. THE FARMER WHO WOULD BE KING presents George Washington to the audience through his own words, and the words of his biographer Mason Locke Weems. Was the father of our country a simple farmer who answered the call of his countrymen, or was his destiny preordained? Or is the truth located somewhere in the middleground? THE GREAT EMANCIPATOR is the story of a simple man. Born in the wilds of Kentucky and mostly self taught, Abraham Lincoln would someday be regarded as the greatest American who ever lived. This play presents him as the storyteller he was. Complete with his Gettysburg Address. THE BULL MOOSE who occupied the White House 100 years ago was truly a man of action. Theodore Roosevelt was a father, author, rancher, sportsman, policeman, Rough Rider, cowboy, big game hunter, Governor of New York and eventually The President of the United States! He believed that power should be used to help the little man, and he practiced what he preached! NIXON AND THE GHOSTS is a surreal drama with dialogue ripped straight from the headlines. On the night before his resignation, Nixon ponders his rise and fall, as the shadows themself seem to come alive and he is confronted by the spirits of Presidents past! Book excerpt: ABOUT THE BOOK The result of over a decade of research, TOKIN' WOMEN: A 4000-Year Herstory presents an enlightening compilation of over 50 famous females throughout "herstory" associated with cannabis-from ancient goddesses to bohemian authors, jazz musicians and icons of the 60s to the film goddesses of today. Readers will recognize many of the names, like Maya Angelou and Jennifer Aniston, but "some of the more obscure women come with the most compelling stories, including adventurous explorers (Gertrude Bell, Iris Tree); pioneers in art, science and literature (Alice B. Toklas, Louisa May Alcott); and other powerful women who lived their lives according to their own rules." - Freedom Leaf, December 2015 ABOUT THE AUTHOR Nola Evangelista (aka Ellen Komp) is a longtime hemp/marijuana activist and author. Currently the deputy director of California NORML, for the past 12 years she has gathered information about prominent cannabis connoisseurs at her website, VeryImportantPotheads.com, and her blog TokinWoman.blogspot.com.
