One day, as I sat in the corner of a dimly lit pub reading a book of haiku, most of which were random nonsense, the idea hit me. Why not write a book of haiku that provided people with some take away sense of usefulness and satisfaction? A book of haiku with meaning and purpose that some might read and think to themselves, "Wow. This really 'speaks' to me". A collection of haiku that might brighten one's day, change a particular course, or even alter a certain mindset in which you may find yourself.

Book excerpt: Djemal discovered haiku while travelling. But it was after a family tragedy that this simple and powerful prose took on new meaning. It offered him a way to put into words the contradicting emotions involved in living and dying. It was a new way to experience life, and find peace and happiness in troubling times, one haiku at a time. Haiku poetry inspires beauty, and insights in often overlooked and ignored ordinary moments. It is a simple tool to increase your awareness and compassion toward life, and help you slow down. In this collection, he presents 188 haiku poems-themes range from food and nature, to love and relationships. Some funny, others sad, but each poem, written in no more or less than 17 syllables, is a place to find peace and calm. A brief meditation in a non-stop world. Use this book to find your peace and open a door to finding the little things in life that will give you the greatest pleasure and happiness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE GREAT BIG BOOK OF HAIKU: 365 Haiku Poems is a poetry anthology for adult readers. It is a satire on adulthood in that the older we get, the less we live life in the moment. The design of this text is such that there are 365 poems, one for every day of the year. Instead of writing a book of poems for children to read one each night at bedtime, they are for adults to read one each morning of the year upon waking up. Setting a vision for your day, you are now conscious of each moment you're participating in. A haiku poem is based on a single moment in time, and that's what gives it personality. This personality is what will inspire you to live more in the present. The structure of a haiku poem is short, only three lines, containing 5 syllables, then 7, and then 5 again. This addition and then subtraction of an even number using a base of odd numbers also reflects the moral of this story in that balance is thought of as a binary, but in life there are much more than only two sides. Each poem was written by starting with a brainstorm on the most intense moment of the day. Every day, for one year, I wrote down the most intense moment or moments I had. Positive and negative. I scrapbooked each card of moment(s) using keywords and images from magazines so that when I returned to them, I would have a lot of inspiration. Then, the following year, I turned them into haiku poems. This collection took more than two years to create, because after that I had to type them all up, edit them, and secure the rest of the book's structure. This anthology is my gift to every adult who seeks solace in the art of poetry.

Book excerpt: These 26 delicious scenes retrieved from childhood help us, young and old, to revisit those times and to share them anew. Not the cookie-cutter haiku you'll find in similar books, Liz Crocket's work will introduce your child (and perhaps you!) to the way contemporary haiku has evolved over the past half-century, and perhaps inspire you to capture your own special moments in the same fashion. -- Jim Kacian, Editor-in-Chief, Haiku in English: The First Hundred Years Elizabeth Crocket has filled this book with happy stories from nature, lessons on life, great ideas for children to try, and lots of family love. The 26 haiku--as many as the letters in the alphabet--present fine examples of alliteration "birthday bat", expression "cutting teeth", suspense "suddenly..." and hinge questions, "do you love me?" Short and simple to read on 3-lines following the form of traditional Japanese poetry, these haiku can inspire children from as early as two to become creative writers too. - David McMurray (Asahi Haikuist columnist in Japan)

Book excerpt: "A wonderful introduction the Japanese tradition of jisei, this volume is crammed with exquisite, spontaneous verse and pithy, often hilarious, descriptions of the eccentric and committed monastics who wrote the poems." --Tricycle: The Buddhist Review Although the consciousness of death is, in most cultures, very much a part of life, this is perhaps nowhere more true than in Japan, where the approach of death has given rise to a centuries-old tradition of writing jisei, or the "death poem." Such a poem is often written in the very last moments of the poet's life. Hundreds of Japanese death poems, many with a commentary describing the circumstances of the poet's death, have been translated into English here, the vast majority of them for the first time. Yoel Hoffmann explores the attitudes and customs surrounding death in historical and present-day Japan and gives examples of how these have been reflected in the nation's literature in general. The development of writing jisei is then examined--from the longing poems of the early nobility and the more "masculine" verses of the samurai to the satirical death poems of later centuries. Zen Buddhist ideas about death are also described as a preface to the collection of Chinese death poems by Zen monks that are also included. Finally, the last section contains three hundred twenty haiku, some of which have never been assembled before, in English translation and romanized in Japanese.
