Book excerpt: Contending that the study of hagiography is significant both for a consideration of medieval literature and for current theoretical debates in medieval studies, this book considers a range of Old French and Anglo-Norman texts, using modern theories of kinship and community to show how saints' lives construe social and sexual relations. Focusing on the depiction of the gift, kinship and community, the book maintains that social and sexual systems play a key role in vernacular hagiography. Such systems, along with the desires they produce and control, are, it is argued, central to hagiography's religious functions, particularly its role as a vehicle of community formation. In attempting to think beyond the limits of human relationships, saints' lives nonetheless create an environment in which queer desires and modes of connection become possible, suggesting that, in this case at least, the orthodox nurtures the queer. This book thus suggests not only that medieval hagiography is worthy of greater attention but also that this corpus might provide an important resource for theorizing community in its medieval contexts and for thinking it in the present. Book excerpt: The Legend of St Brendan is a study of two accounts of a voyage undertaken by Brendan, a sixth-century Irish saint. The immense popularity of the Latin version encouraged many vernacular translations, including a twelfth-century Anglo-Norman reworking of the narrative which excises much of the devotional material seen in the ninth-century Navigatio Sancti Brendani abbatis and changes the emphasis, leaving a recognisably secular narrative. The vernacular version focuses on marvellous imagery and the trials and tribulations of a long sea-voyage. Together the two versions demonstrate a movement away from hagiography towards adventure. Studies of the two versions rarely discuss the elements of the fantastic. Following a summary of authorship, audiences and sources, this comparative study adopts a structural approach to the two versions of the Brendan narrative. It considers what the fantastic imagery achieves and addresses issues raised with respect to theological parallels.

Book excerpt: The story of the apocryphal pope and saint Gregorius was extremely popular throughout the middle ages and later in Europe and beyond. In a memorable narrative Gregorius is born from an incestuous relationship between a noble brother and sister, and is set out to sea with (unspecific) details of his origin. He is found and brought up by an abbot, but when revealed as a foundling leaves as a knight to seek his origins; he rescues his mother's land from attack, and marries her. On discovering his sin he undertakes years of penance on a rocky islet, which he survives miraculously. An angel sends emissaries from Rome to find him after the death of the pope, the key to his shackles is equally miraculously discovered, and he becomes pope. This hagiographical romance is not a variation upon Oedipus; it uses the invisible sin of incest as a parallel both for original sin (the sin of Adam and Eve) and for actual sin. It combines the universal theme of the quest for identity with the problem not of guilt as such, which is inevitable, but of how sinful humanity can cope with it. Brian Murdoch traces the story's probable origins in medieval England or France, and its later appearance in versions from Iceland and Ireland to Iraq and Egypt, in verse and prose, in full-scale literary forms or in much-reduced folktales, in theological as well as secular contexts, down to Thomas Mann and beyond.

Book excerpt: This volume compares characteristics of Old English literature to ‘Matter of England’ romances to determine whether key aspects of the poetry of the former continued in these stories on into the Middle English period. First, the book demonstrates the contemplative tone, respect for nature, and communal mindset present via monastic and hagiographic traditions in Old English poetry, before arguing that the midland romances, King Horn and Athelston, also possess these characteristics. Ultimately, it reveals important aspects of the afterlife of Old English literature and culture in England. Some intriguing discoveries are detailed, including unexpected points of contact between the English and Arabs in both the pre- and post-Conquest periods, as shown by the etymology of Saracen diction in King Horn. Furthermore, comparisons with the dreamer in The Dream of the Rood and an examination of the Old English verb “þencan” used by the Saracen reveal a complicated characterization, which goes deeper than what may be expected for the stock pagan enemy in Middle English romance. The book also investigates the possibility that, in Athelston, there is a reference to the Viking Guthrum, revealing the complex associations that late medieval English culture might have had with its Viking/Anglo-Saxon past. Finally, while looking at Athelston through the lens of the Anglo-Saxon natural world, this study probes what feels like a very Old English sense of kenotic love (via St. Edmund). This is manifested in the promise of grace at the outset of the romance, one that oversees not only a chain of events leading to King Athelston’s final submission and repentance, but also the unification of disparate cultures and a leveling of hierarchies. These romances seem to imbue the stories with a spiritual component, a “concrete universal,” and signify metonymy similar to the elegiac hopeful longing and the communal in the Old English poetry.
