Book excerpt: Using momentum space spectral functions of infinite nuclear matter at finite temperature, position space spectral functions are calculated. The spectral functions are calculated for both the freely propagating and the interacting cases for a two-particle propagator. The resulting data set is then plotted to determine structure. From these two cases the density of states is determined by plotting the two separate cases together to find the summation of the two.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first half of the 20th Century, low-energy nuclear physics was one of the dominant foci of all of science. Then accelerators prospered and energies rose, leading to an increase of interest in the GeV regime and beyond. The three articles comprising this end-of-century Advances in Nuclear Physics present a fitting and masterful summary of the energy regimes through which nuclear physics has developed and promises to develop in future. One article describes new information about fundamental symmetries found with kV neutrons. Another reviews our progress in understanding nucleon-nucleus scattering up to 1 GeV. The third analyzes dilepton production as a probe for quark-gluon plasmas generated in relativistic heavy-ion collisions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nuclear many-body theory provides the foundation for understanding and exploiting the new generation of experimental probes of nuclear structure that are now becoming available. The twentieth volume of Advances in Nuclear Physics is thus devoted to two major theoretical chapters addressing two fundamental issues: understanding single-particle properties in nuclei and the consistent formulation of a relativistic theory appropriate for hadronic physics. The long-standing problem of understanding single-particle behavior in a strongly interacting nuclear system takes on new urgency and sig nificance in the face of detailed measurements of the nuclear spectral function in (e, e'p) experiments. In the first chapter, Mahaux and Sartor confront head-on the ambiguities in defining single-particle properties and the limitations in calculating them microscopically. This thoughtful chapter provides a thorough, pedagogical review of the relevant aspects of many body theory and of previous treatments in the nuclear physics literature. It also presents the author's own vision of how to properly formulate and understand single-particle behavior based on the self-energy, or mass operator. Their approach provides a powerful, unified description of the nuclear mean field that covers negative as well as positive energies and consistently fills in that information that cannot yet be calculated reliably microscopically by a theoretically motivated phenomenology. Particular emphasis is placed upon experiment, both in the exhaustive comparisons with experimental data and in the detailed discussion of the relations of each of the theoretical quantities defined in the chapter to physical observables.

Book excerpt: This exhaustive survey is the result of a four year effort by many leading researchers in the field to produce both a readable introduction and a yardstick for the many upcoming experiments using heavy ion collisions to examine the properties of nuclear matter. The books falls naturally into five large parts, first examining the bulk properties of strongly interacting matter, including its equation of state and phase structure. Part II discusses elementary hadronic excitations of nuclear matter, Part III addresses the concepts and models regarding the space-time dynamics of nuclear collision experiments, Part IV collects the observables from past and current high-energy heavy-ion facilities in the context of the theoretical predictions specific to compressed baryonic matter. Part V finally gives a brief description of the experimental concepts. The book explicitly addresses everyone working or planning to enter the field of high-energy nuclear physics.

Book excerpt: In recent years, the main research areas were photonuclear reactions and meson productions by using the first high-duty tagged photon beam and the TAGX spectrometer. Although this field is developing quite rapidly, the synchrotron was closed in 1999 after 37 years of operation, and these activities continue at new facilities. It was therfore a good time to discuss the present status and future directions of this field at this occasion. The Symposium was attended by 85 physicists and 35 talks were presented. Book excerpt: Spin physics is one of the most important and active areas of theoretical/experimental nuclear physics. In nuclear reactions, the observations of spin polarizations give important clues to the nuclear structures and reaction mechanism. For high energy nuclear physics, the polarized quark-parton distributions of the nucleon/nucleus are studied intensively. In the study of baryon structures and nuclear astrophysics, spin is an important observable through hadron reactions. The focus of these proceedings is on the spin-dependent phenomena in nuclear and hadronic reactions and related topics in nuclear and hadron physics. The main subjects covered are: Spin polarization phenomena in nuclear and hadronic reactions; spin-dependent excitations in nuclei and spin observables; recent development in nuclear reaction theories; spin-dependent phenomena in fundamental processes; related topics
