Tolstoy moved away from novels with daunting page-counts towards more accessible, but no less profound, works of fiction, such as The Death of Ivan Ilyich. Father Sergius follows Tolstoy's own philosophical and biographical trajectory from elite nobleman with almost infinite promise to a wandering beggar in old age. Like Tolstoy, Sergius questions his faith, doubts his commitment to God, and sins through pride, lust, and boredom. Despite his own best efforts, including self-mutilation, Sergius finds himself unable to gain true faith until he finds forgiveness. Father Sergius is a readable account of Tolstoy's philosophy, aimed at teaching the reader about faith and the ways to serve God. Like his other late works, he shows the emptiness of material wealth and social status, focusing the reader's attention on the internal struggle to achieve closeness to God. Sergius is at once saintly and deeply flawed, portraying not a canonical monk, but rather the profoundly human struggle to be good.
