Book excerpt: Understanding habitat use and movement patterns of hatchling Terepene carolina carolina (Eastern Box Turtles) may be critical to guide conservation efforts, since very little is known about this early life-history stage. I primarily investigated post-emergence movements and habitat associations of T. carolina hatchlings up until hibernation. This study will also address other ecological aspects of the box turtles such as nesting and hibernation. Radio-telemetry was used to relocate ten hatchlings every other day for three months at a research site located in Hamden, Connecticut. Distance moved (in meters), direction (in degrees) and vegetation (percent coverage estimates in one meter plots) were measured at every observation. As part of the observation, two random plots of equal distance from the previous location were also measured. Clutch sizes ranged from a single egg to seven eggs and all nests were located in an open area composed mostly of circumneutral sandy substrates (pH range from 5.96 to 7.63). Mean length of incubation ranged from 83 to 97 days, and on average the hatch success rate was 64%. Hatchlings spent a majority of their time in open fields in plots having lower light intensity (P 0.001), less bare ground (P = 0.003), more leaf litter (P = 0.041), more thatch (P = 0.009), contained more Rubus (P 0.001), and/or thicker grasses (P = 0.002) than random plots. Distance moved between observations ranged from 0 to 52.7 m and all hatchling movements appear to have been in a north/northeast direction. Most hatchlings began hibernating between the 8th and 11th of October, which correlates with the first frost of the season. All hatchlings emerged from hibernation the week of the last frost (April 6th) and average hibernation was 150 days. Eastern box turtles are of conservation concern, and habitat requirements as well as movement should be considered in management decisions. My data suggests that these hatchlings traveled directionally after leaving the nest and sought concealing vegetation cover. Knowing potential movement patterns and characteristics of a habitat that hatchlings seek out is critical in guiding future management and conservation decisions.

Book excerpt: We used marked-recapture and radiotelemetry to monitor non-native juvenile Alligator Snapping Turtles, Macrochelys temminckii, following release at the Wolf River Wildlife Management Area, Fayette County, Tennessee. This species, endemic to the Southeastern United States, is North America's largest freshwater turtle and considered of conservation concern in Tennessee and throughout much of its historical range ... Our study aimed to augment the efforts of the (Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency) by monitoring the post-release movements and habitat selection of introduced juveniles in two types of palustrine habitats (a cypress/tupelo dominated slough and the main river channel).

In North American Box Turtles, C. Kenneth Dodd, Jr., has written the first book-length natural history of the twelve species and subspecies of this endangered animal. This volume includes comprehensive information on the species’ evolution, behavior, courtship and reproduction, habitat use, diet, population structure, systematics, and disease. Special features include color photos of all species, subspecies, and their habitats; a simple identification guide to both living and fossil species; and a summary of information on fossil Terrapene and Native uses of box turtles. End-of-chapter sections highlight future research directions, including the need for long-term monitoring and observation of box turtles within their natural habitat and conservation applications. A glossary and a bibliography of literature on box turtles accompany the text. All royalties from the sales of this volume will go to the Chelonian Research Foundation, a nonprofit foundation for the conservation of turtles.

Book excerpt: The Eastern box turtle (Terrapene carolina carolina) is one of the most common reptiles in North America, but is soon to be threatened due to increased urbanization, disease, and the pet and food trades. In order to assist resource managers in choosing suitable sites for relocation studies, more information on the winter ecology of this species is necessary. We examined the temperature tolerance, microhabitat and degree of philopatry to hibernacula for juvenile and adult E. box turtles for two consecutive winters in Charles City Co, VA. The turtles were tracked via radio telemetry to record point locations during the active and inactive seasons. iButton data loggers were attached to each turtle to record temperature throughout winter. Vegetation data were collected and analyzed to determine if there are microhabitat differences between adult and juvenile turtles, and between occupied and random plots. Philopatry to wintering hibernacula was determined by measurements in the field and using ArcGIS. Adults had significantly higher minimum temperatures than juveniles during the first winter (P=0.027), but not during the second winter (P=0.327). Shrub and canopy cover were marginally higher for random plots than for occupied turtle hibernacula plots (P=0.066 and P=0.092, respectively); however there were no significant differences for any of the vegetation variables between adults and juveniles. Some of the turtles demonstrated site fidelity of their hibernacula. The temperature data from this study suggests that juveniles may have poorer hibernacula selection and therefore lower minimum temperatures compared with adults, but this was not seen in our second season suggesting that juvenile turtles may learn to choose better hibernacula or to dig deeper. The difference in findings for the two winters could be attributed to illness by several of the turtles the first winter, by increased maturity in the juveniles the second winter or by the significant difference in ambient temperature for the two winters (P=0.0001). Juveniles do not differ from adults in microhabitat selection, therefore resource managers may not need to plan differently for juveniles and adults in relocation studies. We also conclude that both age groups of T. c. carolina exhibit site fidelity of hibernacula.

Book excerpt: The vast scope of conservation problems has forced biologists and managers to rely on "surrogate" species to serve as shortcuts to guide their decision making. These species-known by a host of different terms, including indicator, umbrella, and flagship species-act as proxies to represent larger conservation issues, such as the location of biodiversity hotspots or general ecosystem health. Synthesizing an immense body of literature, conservation biologist and field researcher Tim Caro offers systematic definitions of surrogate species concepts, explores biological theories that underlie them, considers how surrogate species are chosen, critically examines evidence for and against their utility, and makes recommendations for their continued use. The book clarifies terminology and contrasts how different terms are used in the real world considers the ecological, taxonomic, and political underpinnings of these shortcuts identifies criteria that make for good surrogate species outlines the circumstances where the application of the surrogate species concept shows promise Conservation by Proxy is a benchmark reference that provides clear definitions and common understanding of the evidence and theory behind surrogate species. It is the first book to review and bring together literature on more than fifteen types of surrogate species, enabling us to assess their role in conservation and offering guidelines on how they can be used most effectively.

Book excerpt: This is the first book on ranaviruses. Ranaviruses are double-stranded DNA viruses that cause hemorrhagic disease in amphibians, reptiles, and fish. They have caused mass die-offs of ectothermic vertebrates in wild and captive populations around the globe. There is evidence that this pathogen is emerging and responsible for population declines in certain locations. Considering that amphibians and freshwater turtles are suitable hosts and the most imperiled vertebrate taxa in the world, ranaviruses can have significant impacts on biodiversity and ecosystem function. Additionally, many fish that are raised in aquaculture facilities and traded internationally are suitable hosts; thus, the potential economic impact of ranaviruses is significant. Ranaviruses also serve as a model for replication and gene function of large double-stranded DNA viruses. There is an urgent need to assemble the contemporary information on ranaviruses and provide guidance on how to assess their threats in populations. Through the Global Ranavirus Consortium, 24 experts from six countries were organize to write this volume, the first book on ranaviruses. The book begins with a discussion on the global extent of ranaviruses, case histories of infection and disease in ectothermic vertebrates, and current phylogeny. Basic principles of ranavirus ecology and evolution are covered next, with a focus on host-pathogen interactions and how the virus emerges in its environment. There are two chapters that will discuss the molecular biology of ranaviruses, host response to infection, and the genes responsible for immune system evasion. One chapter establishes standards for testing for infection and diagnosing ranaviral disease. The book ends by providing guidance on how to design ranavirus surveillance studies and analyze data to determine risk, and discussing the role of the Global Ranavirus Consortium in organizing research and outreach activities.
