Book excerpt: Many rivers, lakes and other inland waters have been modified and degraded by human activities. Rehabilitation of degraded systems and mitigation of impacts of ongoing stresses are needed to preserve ecosystem services and fisheries and are of a high priority if the aquatic biodiversity of inland waters is to be conserved. A number of technical solutions for rehabilitation and mitigation are available to restore habitat diversity, provide for environmental flows and ensure longitudinal and lateral connectivity within such systems. It is recommended that such methods are applied on a basin-wide scale but it is recognized that more restricted sections of waterbodies may have to be targeted. Planning for rehabilitation projects needs to be carefully conceived with clear objectives of the rehabilitation and selection methods to be used. Selecting appropriate methods for any particular waterbody depends on local, social and economic conditions and priorities. Land tenure, local laws and the interests of other local stakeholders in the resource also need to be incorporated into rehabilitation plans. In international rivers and lakes, rehabilitation plans may need negotiation and cooperation by all riparian states. After execution, rehabilitation projects should be carefully monitored in order to meet the objectives.

Book excerpt: The review presents the strong business case for inland food fisheries in developing countries to be either a co-benefit, or very often the main benefit, of ecosystem restoration. In view of the current state of inland water aquatic habitats the potential for restoration is high. Realizing this potential requires concerted action to overcome current challenges, foremost of which is the invisibility of inland fisheries in many policy arenas as well as technical and scientific fora. The drivers of ecosystem degradation, ecosystem services valuation frameworks and the main technical tools for implementing interventions are presented. Experiences in developed countries dominate the literature but are not necessarily applicable to developing country inland food fisheries. Local communities that have high dependency on inland fisheries and live in close association with inland water fisheries habitats not only provide much higher fisheries values but a management asset that is unavailable in developed countries and the mainstay of many successful restoration programmes. Ten case studies, representing effective restoration of food fisheries from local to basin scale are used to illustrate what can be achieved. The prospects of inland fisheries benefiting from, or contributing to, the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021–2030) are good but upscaling the existing progress will require increased and sustained efforts to mainstream the values of inland fisheries including their co-benefits for biodiversity conservation.

Book excerpt: The main goal of this report is to summarize the fish community responses to the Habitat Rehabilitation and Enhancement Program (HREP) construction efforts at Lake Chautauqua. Habitat issues for fish were largely focused on the stable water levels for the north pool. Therefore, our specific objectives include assessing changes in fish community composition and structure and assessments of length-frequency distributions on the basis of pre- and post- construction collection efforts. Included in this assessment is a summary of the 2002 field collection effort that has not been in previous annual reports. Sampling was conducted annually in each of the two periods: pre- (1991-1993) and post construction (2000-2002) to assess fish community responses in the north pool. Standardized fish collection gears were used during both sample periods following protocols outlined by the Environmental Management Program's Long Term Resource Monitoring Program and typically included day electrofishing and fyke nets. Gill nets were also used to further sample open-water habitats.
