Book excerpt: Viewed this way, Richardson becomes a more challenging figure - an architect who in many ways was shaped by and was consistent with his era, even as he dominated it. In addition to shedding new light on the architect, the book shows how much Richardson scholarship has changed and matured over the course of a century."--BOOK JACKET.

Book excerpt: Shares with readers America’s first and most infamous serial killer and his diabolical killing spree during the 1893 World’s Fair in Chicago The first comprehensive book following the life and career of H. H. Holmes A fascinating true story about a dark moment in Chicago’s history H. H. Holmes: The True History of the White City Devil uncovers not only the true story of Holmes but also how the legend evolved. It uses hundreds of primary sources that have never been studied before. This includes letters, articles, legal documents, and records that have been tucked away in archives for more than 100 years. While H. H. Holmes is now as famous as he was in 1895, a thorough analysis of modern materials clarifies how much of the story as we know it came from reports who were far from the action, an incredibly unqualified new police chief, and lies from Holmes himself. This book is a tale of an outlaw. It covers Holmes’s own story with new insights. The author, Adam Selzer, has uncovered stunning new data about Holmes. He combines turn-of-the-century America, the crazy group of characters who were in and around the famous “castle” building, and the killer’s own background. This book is the first fully accurate account of what truly happened in Holmes’s horror castle. H. H. Holmes, with its exhaustive research and careful detail, is an irreplaceable partner to the upcoming Leonardo DiCaprio and Martin Scorsese movie about Holmes’s murder spree based on Erik Larson’s The Devil in the White City.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H. H. Asquith: Last of the Romans chronicles the life of H. H. Asquith (1852–1928), the longest-serving British prime minister between Lord Liverpool and Margaret Thatcher. In this study, V. Markham Lester argues that the key to understanding Asquith is to recognize the classical virtues he acquired early in his education. Employing unpublished sources and documents made public since the last full-scale biography of Asquith was published more than forty years ago, Lester challenges many interpretations in earlier biographies. Previous studies of Asquith have often glossed over his education and early years, contending that his development did not contribute materially to his mature outlook. On the contrary, by examining thoroughly Asquith’s early career—particularly his tenure as home secretary and his time as a barrister—this book offers unappreciated insights into Asquith’s character and development as a political leader. Lester further challenges the previous conclusions that Asquith failed as a war leader, demonstrating that Asquith succeeded in meeting the novel challenges of World War I and that his accomplishments have been insufficiently understood. He explains how Asquith’s lifelong reliance on rational thought, eloquence, and self-control produced the impressive leadership required to hold the fragile government together as it struggled to handle the unexpected and unprecedented challenges of world war and to lay the foundation for ultimate victory in the Great War.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before I cut loose on this story for some readers that may never heard of one of the most evil men in America his name is H.H. Holmes who is the first documented serial killer in the United States. During the 1893 Columbia Exposition, he lured his victims into his “Murder Castle” which was built to his expectations with gas jets piped into some rooms to gas his victims and also trapdoors and chutes that he could move the bodies down to the basement so he could burn his victims and sell their skeletal remains for money. It is said that he killed over two hundred women or maybe more. H.H. Holmes was sentenced by hanging on May 7, 1896, and buried at the Holy Cross Cemetery in Delaware County Pennsylvania. The story begins here now that we have some background on H.H. Holmes. Fast forward to 1976 when Jason Keller decided to write his first novel on serial killer H.H. Holmes, but just writing about him wasn't enough for him so he decided to pay a visit to the murder castle to get his creative juices flowing. When Jason arrived at the very spot where the murder castle once stood he was disappointed to find out it had burned down long ago and was now a post office. Instead of getting back in his car and driving off, he decided to go inside the post office and ask the postmaster if there was any existing part of the murder castle still part of the foundation and if H.H. Holmes could still be haunting this place. Jason interviewed some of the employees at the post office to see if they ever had a ghostly encounter with H.H. Holmes ghost but after interviewing many of them he wasn't getting the information he so desperately needed to start on his novel so he left and headed to the library to read some books on the occult to see if he could somehow bring H.H. Holme's ghost to life and communicate with him so he could be the first author in history to write his novel with the help of a ghost from the past.

Book excerpt: In The Trial of H H Crippen, Filson Young compiles the transcript of one of the most famous murder trials of the early 20th century. Young gives us a clear image of the quiet, considerate doctor, and why such a man might be driven to kill his frivolous, unfaithful wife, Belle Elmore. After fleeing the country in disguise with his young mistress Ethel Le Neve, he is dramatically captured by Inspector Dew, and brought back to face justice. Here is clearly laid out all the stages of the trial, from the gruesome act itself, to the final verdict. First published in 1920, The Trial of H H Crippen sheds light not only on the elaborate layers of deceit used to cover up the heinous crime, but also on the intricate details of the trial, the fascinating word-for-word dialogue of the courtroom of 1910, and how, ultimately, a murderer was brought to justice.

Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada, reverentially known as Srila Prabhupada, is the Founder-Acarya (spiritual master/ guru) of ISKCON (the International Society for Krishna Consciousness, or Hare Krishna movement). His Holiness Jayadvaita Swami, an ISKCON-authorised guru and Director of the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust (BBT), admits to having made large-scale changes (running into the thousands) to Srila Prabhupada’s Bhagavad-gita As It Is: “And if the integrity of the books is in doubt, then everything’s in doubt. [...] We should all be concerned about the integrity of Prabhupada’s books. [...] I’ve undertaken a really large-scale revision [...] How do you know we didn’t mess up?” - HH Jayadvaita Swami Jayadvaita Swami is, therefore, a person who wields immense influence over the integrity of Srila Prabhupada's books, shaping what will be read as being the words of Srila Prabhupada for generations of devotees to come. Given this influence, it is only right and proper for us to examine Jayadvaita Swami’s integrity. And that is exactly what this book does. In particular, we examine the following claim made to establish Jayadvaita Swami’s suitability for having undertaken this “really large-scale revision”: “Since Srila Prabhupada's departure, Jayadvaita Swami has taken part in no philosophical heresies (and has spoken out against several), he has maintained his spiritual vows, he has served Srila Prabhupada steadily.” - bbtedit.com And this examination is done using only the words of Jayadvaita Swami himself and those whom he accepts as bona fide authorities.
