Wells Collection includes five novels; The Time Machine, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The Invisible Man, The War of the Worlds, and The First Men in the Moon. H. G. Wells is credited with the popularisation of time travel in 1895 with The Time Machine, introducing the idea of time being the "fourth dimension" a decade before the publication of Einstein's first Relativity papers. In 1896, he imagined a mad scientist creating human-like beings from animals in The Island of Doctor Moreau, which created a growing interest in animal welfare throughout Europe. In 1897 with The Invisible Man, Wells shows how a formula could render one invisible, recognizing that an invisible eye would not be able to focus, thus rendering the invisible man blind. With The War of the Worlds in 1898, Wells established the idea that an advanced civilization could live on Mars, popularising the term 'martian' and the idea that aliens could invade Earth. With The First Men in the Moon, Wells developed antigravity, a development that we are still dreaming about to this day.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: H. G. Wells was one of the most influential science fiction writers of all times. His three most important novels The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, and The Island of Dr. Moreau still seem as fresh today as when he first wrote them. The Time Machine explores human nature. The Time Traveler finds himself in 802,701 A.D., where he meets the peaceful Eloi and encounters the violent Morlocks. Wells uses these two descendants of man to explore evil and its causes, drawing conclusions that might surprise you in this riveting tale that has stood the test of time. This deluxe edition has the deleted portion of chapter eleven that ran in the original serialization, but was removed by Wells for book publication; it runs after the story as the "Gray Man." In addition to the "Gray Man" this edition also contains the full text of "The Chronic Argonauts" Wells' first time travel story which he borrows liberally from for The Time Machine. In War of the Worlds Mankind finds itself in a fight for its very survival when invaders from Mars land on Earth. Using their vastly superior technology the Martians make short order of all the great powers of Earth, laying waste to everything in their path. The novel follows an unnamed man as he flees for his life while trying to locate his wife in the shattered ruins of Earth. Powerful and insightful. Island of Doctor Moreau: Edward Prendick finds himself adrift at sea, a lone survivor of a ship wreck. He spends more than a week drifting without food or water. Pendrick consigns himself to death, but fate intervenes and delivers him to an unknown Island. The terrors that await him on Doctor Moreau's island are far worse than what he has just been rescued from or anything that he could imagined.

Book excerpt: This collector-quality edition includes the complete text of five of H. G. Wells' science fiction classics - The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, The Island of Dr. Moreau and The First Men in the Moon - specially selected for this collection because of their enduring influence on the science fiction genre, in a freshly edited and newly typeset edition. With a large 7.44"x9.69 page size, this Summit Classic edition is printed on hefty bright white paper with a fully laminated cover featuring an original full color design. Page headers, modern design and page layout, and an original, newly written author biography discussing Wells' life, work and enduring literary significance exemplify the attention to detail given this volume. Herbert George Wells (September 21, 1866 - August 13, 1946), was born to domestic servants-turned shopkeepers. Teetering on the brink of poverty after an injury ended his father's income as a part-time professional cricketer, Wells' parents apprenticed him to a draper in 1881, but he was dismissed in 1883. He then became a "pupil-teacher" in a system where older students helped teach younger students. Despite a wholly inadequate education, Wells, a voracious reader, won a scholarship to the Normal School of Science in London where he studied biology under T. H. Huxley. Wells completed coursework in biology and physics, but left the school after the 1886-1887 school year, having failed geology and lost his scholarship. Although Wells is best known today for his science fiction works, his first published book was a biology textbook in 1893. The publication of The Time Machine in 1895 launched Wells' long and successful writing career, and over the next several years he published The War of the Worlds, The Invisible Man, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The First Men in the Moon and a host of other lesser-known works ranging from humorous social commentary novels to non-fiction and socio-political polemics. In 1920, he published his revolutionary "Outline of History," which became the model for numerous twentieth-century "outline" texts in a variety of disciplines. Wells was an outspoken socialist and pacifist, although he supported Britain's entry into World War I and opposed efforts to bring about an early end to the war on unfavorable terms in 1916. He also endorsed eugenics, espousing "sterilization of failure" as a means of improving the quality of the human race. He was an advocate of world governance and a strong supporter of the League of Nations. Wells' works became increasingly political and didactic, and only his early science fiction novels are widely read today. But those novels provide timeless insights into science and society, are interesting for their often-accurate prediction of future events and scientific developments, and are easy to read and highly entertaining. Many of Wells' literary devices -- time travel, hostile aliens, mutant creatures, space travel -- are staples of science fiction today, but were unique and imaginative when presented by Wells. In literary circles, some of Wells' comic novels, virtually unknown to most readers today, are considered outstanding examples of 20th century British literature, and Wells is regarded as perhaps the pre-eminent exeplar of pre-World War I liberal optimism. Yet Wells also clearly shares the sense of dread of science and technology run amok that runs through Victorian and post-Victorian British thought, with mad scientists and mass destruction seemingly lying in wait for unwary humanity. Wells, Hugo Gernsback and Jules Verne are sometimes referred to as "The Fathers of Science Fiction," and it is difficult to imagine what "science fiction" might look like today without Wells' contributions.

The three tales included in this volume share the common theme of humanity's efforts, with varying success, to advance and control science, and the effect of the individual scientist on the outcome, as well as the impact of scientific discovery on the individual scientist. A common theme in the science fiction genre, these tales by Wells represent three of the earliest and most influential such stories. A matching volume, The Best of H.G. Wells (1866-1946), alongside Jules Verne, has been given the title "Father of Science Fiction" In 1898 he wrote the War of the Worlds: "Yet across the gulf of space, minds that are to our minds as ours are to those of the beasts that perish, intellects vast and cool and unsympathetic, regarded this earth with envious eyes, and slowly and surely drew their plans against us. And early in the twentieth century came the great disillusionment." This became perhaps the first widely read modern science fiction stories. Disturbingly the story foretold things to come - robotics, World Wars, aerial bombing, tanks, chemical weapons, and nuclear power. Wells was part prophet and part pessimist and often his science fiction stories offer a bleak future for humanity. This Omnibus edition is a must-read for any H G Wells fan and includes the following stories: The Time Machine The War Of The Worlds The Shape Of Things To Come The Invisible Man The Island Of Doctor Moreau The First Men In The Moon The Food Of The Gods In The Days Of The Comet

The War of the Worlds: still considered by many to be the best novel of alien invasion ever written. The Island of Doctor Moreau: with its terrible creation The House of Pain, this tale anticipated our terror of genetic engineering. The Invisible Man: the classic study of scientific hubris. Wells' The Time Machine, from 1895, popularized the idea of a vehicle that allows its user to travel intentionally and selectively across time, and indeed Wells is credited with coining the very term "time machine. Causing mass hysteria as listeners of its 1938 radio broadcast believed a Martian invasion of Earth really was taking place, H. G. Wells' The War of the Worlds is perhaps the most famous novel of its genre. This 1898 story has spawned films, radio and television series and comic-book adaptions, and its popularity endures today.
