Book Synopsis Bioeconomics of Invasive Species by : Reuben P. Keller
Download or read book Bioeconomics of Invasive Species written by Reuben P. Keller and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2009-04-22 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biological invasions are one of the strongest drivers of global environmental change, and invasive species are now often in the public discourse. At the same time, economists have begun to take a real interest in determining how invasive species interact with economic systems, and how invaders should be controlled to optimize societal wealth. Although the work from ecologists and economists have both greatly expanded our understanding of the drivers and impacts of invasions, little integration between the fields has occurred that would allow managers and policy-makers to identify the optical expenditures on, for example, prevention and control of invasive species. Because the level of effort expended on invasive species management is intricately linked to the costs and projected benefits of that management, there is an urgent need for greater synthesis between ecology and economics. This book brings ecology and economics together in new ways to address how we deal with the dynamics and impacts of invasive species, and is the outcome fo many years of collaborative research between a small group of economists and ecologists. The outcome is clear demonstration of the utility of combining ecological and economic models for addressing critical questions in the management of invasive species.

Download or read book Human Activity and the Environment, 2000 written by Statistics Canada. System of National Accounts Branch and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canadians recognize the importance of a clean and healthy environment. We understand that the capacity of the environment to supply materials and absorb wastes is finite. But to be effective at reducing our collective impact on the environment we need systematic, accessible and relevant information. Without such information, we are unable to understand and respond to environmental change. Human activity and the environment 2000 meets this need with a collection of environmental statistics, brought together from many sources. The report provides a statistical picture of Canada's environment with special emphasis on human activity and its relationship to natural systems' air, water, soil, plants and animals. The fact that much of Canada's economy is supported by the wealth of its natural resources raises questions about the sustainability of our resource use. Can we maintain air, water and soil quality? Can we continue to extract renewable and non-renewable resources at current rates? Are we implementing conservation and recycling measures? This edition of Human activity and the environment provides extensive data on population, economic activities, the environment and the links among these key elements. Analysis and interpretation support the statistics and help readers make sense of these complex interactions -- STC BiblioCat.
Book Synopsis International Handbook of Pollution Control by : Edward J. Kormondy
Download or read book International Handbook of Pollution Control written by Edward J. Kormondy and published by Greenwood. This book was released on 1989-02-03 with total page 496 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A very useful handbook for researchers interested in getting a quick summary of the state of environmental regulation in a particular country, but rather specialized. Choice Pollution contaminates the air, land, and water with no regard for the boundaries between nations. The effective regulation of pollution, therefore, requires cooperation that transcends economic and political boundaries. This comprehensive survey of pollution control incorporates 24 essays by contributors from around the world. Collectively, they lend cross-cultural perspective to common ground: the historical background, major political problems, and implementation of pollution control. Political problems are considered from regional, national, and international perspectives. Factors in implementation include the role of organizations--both governmental and nongovernmental--fines, incentives, prohibitions, and liabilities. Two introductory chapters define the nature of pollution and international aspects of its regulation. The main essays are grouped according to region and arranged alphabetically within each region. The contributors include not only scientists but legal and political authorities as well. Each essay offers the unique perspective of one nation and the particular internal and external pollution problems it faces. Three helpful indexes complete this indispensable reference source on the regulation of pollution. A must for scientists and ecologists, this book is also appropriate for members of state, local, and federal regulatory agencies.
