Book excerpt: From the author of the beloved romance classic The Windflower comes a novel of fortune, fate, and fiery passion. Now available in ebook for the first time. A resourceful young gypsy living by her wits, Liza knows what proper-bred Englishmen think about women of her kind. So when she's caught trespassing on the estate of the esteemed Earl of Brockhaven, she expects no mercy. Fortunately for her, the master of the house-the impossibly handsome Lord Stewart-finds the lovely Liza to be utterly enchanting, a wild gypsy rose just waiting to be plucked . . . Stewart soon learns that there's more to this girl than meets the eye. No ordinary vagabond, Liza displays a fierce intelligence that sets his heart on fire-and she wears a mysterious medallion that arouses his curiosity. An old family heirloom, it is Liza's only link to a long-lost fortune. But the poor girl can't even think about money-when she would gladly trade it all for one reckless night in Stewart's arms. Book excerpt: The Gypsy Queen's Vow is a story by May Agnes Fleming. Excerpt: "They were now rapidly approaching the city—the loud crash and din of which had somewhat subsided, owing to the inclemency of the weather and the lateness of the hour. The gipsy, who had not heard a word of the foregoing conversation—it having been carried on in a prudently-subdued tone—had wrapped her coarse cloak closer around her, while the gaze of her devouring eyes grew more intense, as the lights of the city began to appear."

Book excerpt: A number of soldiers were standing in the road near the bungalow of Brigadier-General Mathieson, the officer in command of the force in the cantonments of Benares and the surrounding district. "They are coming now, I think," one sergeant said to another. "It is a bad business. They say the General is terribly hurt, and it was thought better to bring him and the other fellow who was mixed up in it down in doolies. I heard Captain Harvey say in the orderly-room that they have arranged relays of bearers every five miles all the way down. He is a good fellow is the General, and we should all miss him.

Book Synopsis Gypsies and Orientalism in German Literature and Anthropology of the Long Nineteenth Century by : Nicholas Saul
Download or read book Gypsies and Orientalism in German Literature and Anthropology of the Long Nineteenth Century written by Nicholas Saul and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2007 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An apparently nomadic diaspora nation of Indian provenance, the Gypsies are present with notable frequency in Germanic literatures from Wolzogen and Brentano to Stifter, Keller, Storm, Raabe, Jensen, Saar and Thomas Mann. Against the background of the still officially unacknowledged Romany Holocaust, Saul analyses in a series of close interpretations the stations of the literary construction of the Gypsy prior to the human disaster. The book's synthesis of scholarship in cultural, social and institutional history, the history of ideas and literary history will appeal to the scholarly community across traditional disciplinary boundaries, and will also serve as a valuable introduction for students from diverse fields.
Book Synopsis Roma-Gypsy Presence in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth by : Lech Mróz
Download or read book Roma-Gypsy Presence in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth written by Lech Mróz and published by Central European University Press. This book was released on 2016-11-01 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is an analysis of 166 original and previously unpublished documents dating from the very first mention of a Gypsy in 1401 up to the year 1 765. These documents range from royal decrees thru lawsuits to entries in municipal records. Some were written in Polish but many are in Latin, German or Ruthenian. They tell the story of not only the Gypsies living in Poland, but also of those who now live in Belarus, Lithuania, Latvia and Ukraine. Though Poland has not traditionally had a large Roma population, the author leads the reader through an eventful history of a people living on the margins of contemporary Europe. The historic documents illustrate a marked contrast to present stereotypes and popular media images and shows how the position of Roma/Gypsies shifted gradually from respected, wealthy and partly settled citizens of the early modern times, towards criminalized vagrants of the 18 th century. This is a careful interpretation and re-interpretation of documents pertaining to the Roma's past that will provide an enlightening historical perspective towards the re-evaluation and self-definition of the Romani people in contemporary Europe.
