This anthology of 27 film reviews includes such film classics as Lawrence of Arabia, Gladiator, Braveheart, and Patton, while also looking at such recent hits as Blood Diamond, 10,000 B.C., National Treasure: Book of Secrets and 300. Each film analysis will provide a brief synopsis, DVD counter reference for key historical scenes, background information of era/event, detailed analysis of historical accuracy and key quotes from the film.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Business of Reading, Julian Lovelock charts the development of the English novel over the past hundred years. Smuggling in titles from Scotland, Ireland and the Caribbean, he focuses on twenty texts written since the end of the First World War, some well-known but others less so, placing them in their historical context. Novelists represented range from D.H. Lawrence, E.M. Forster and Virginia Woolf, through Graham Greene, Kingsley Amis and Iris Murdoch, to such contemporary writers as Ian McEwan, Maggie O'Farrell and Graham Swift. Written in a lucid style that reflects his expertise and enthusiasm, Lovelock's innovative selection, perceptive analysis and lightness of touch will appeal to the general reader, the book club member and the student. He argues that our response as readers is an important part of the creative process, and while he mainly avoids the critical '-isms' that have characterised recent academic debate, he introduces such concepts as intertextuality, metafiction and the role of the often unreliable narrator, showing how an appreciation of the way the language of fiction works can only add to our understanding and enjoyment.

Book excerpt: Byron Smith moved back to his family home in Little Falls, Minnesota, to care for his elderly mother and enjoy a quiet retirement from the US State Department. On Thanksgiving Day 2012, Byron shot and killed two teens who broke into his home by breaking a bedroom window. It was the sixth burglary in less than six months. Previous burglaries included over fifty thousand dollars in gold, cash, jewelry, and his Vietnam medals. He feared for his life as each burglary became more violent, and the fear that he would be killed by his own guns intensified. With his training in security, he installed cameras and recorders and locked and dead bolted every door and window to his home to prevent entry. Prescription drug bottles were found in the teen’s car from another home they had broken into the night before. Byron was convicted of first-degree murder in April of 2014 after an unusual trial and sentenced to life in prison. Before the trial, he lived with his neighbors, John and Kathy Lange and their fifteen-year-old-son, Dilan. This story is an intimate insight into this family’s friendship and support of Byron while this incident became national news. A Dateline episode, “12 Minutes on Elm Street,” aired in May of 2014, only depicted a small portion of the real story. This book reveals facts that were not allowed in the trial and how the ripple effect of our nation’s drug epidemic caused a US veteran to be imprisoned by his own fear.

This book provides professional development for generalist primary teachers and student-teachers and also offers support to subject leaders charged with the responsibility for other colleagues. It will build on current practice and aim to increase knowledge, understanding, confidence and enthusiasm in an area of the curriculum which often receives a very short time allocation during initial teaching training courses. Teaching Physical Education in the Primary School is a comprehensive guide to the subject for primary educators. It deals with not only the teaching and learning of PE, but also everything that is relevant to co-ordinating the subject.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the majority of Americans, hard times have long been a way of life. Some work multiple low-wage jobs, others face the squeeze of stagnant wages and rising costs of living. Sociologist Celine-Marie Pascale talked with people across Appalachia, at the Standing Rock and Wind River reservations, and in the bustling city of Oakland, California. Their voices offer a wide range of experiences that complicate dominant national narratives about economic struggles. Yet Living on the Edge is about more than individual experiences. It's about a nation in a deep economic and moral crisis. It’s about the long-standing collusion between government and corporations that prioritizes profits over people, over the environment, and over the nation's well-being. It's about how racism, sexism, violence, and the pandemic shape daily experience in struggling communities. And, ultimately, it's a book about hope that lays out a vision for the future as honest as it is ambitious. Most people in the book are not progressives; none are radicals. They're hard-working people who know from experience that the current system is unsustainable. Across the country people described the need for a living wage, accessible health care, immigration reform, and free education. Their voices are worth listening to.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This third edition of Teaching Children Gymnastics will help you tailor a gymnastics program to your teaching situation while combining the best facets of developmental skills, health-related fitness, and conceptual learning based on process characteristics of body, space, effort, and relationships. Internationally renowned author and educator Peter Werner and coauthors Lori Williams and Tina Hall guide you through the process of teaching gymnastics skills and then linking those skills into sequences. Having conducted workshops at all levels, the three authors combine decades’ worth of gymnastics knowledge and teaching experience. In this book, they offer updated and new material, including • a chapter on designing gymnastics sequences; • sections on behavior management, inclusion, and advocacy; • information on scope and sequence for grades K to 5; • information based on revised national standards, assessment, and designing of gymnastics sequences; and • additional learning experiences, plus ideas for creating more learning experiences. You will find real-life scenarios that will help you apply the material, and you will learn how to create a positive learning environment for your students. Chapter objectives, summaries, and reflection questions enhance the learning experience. Part I of Teaching Children Gymnastics provides an overview of developmentally appropriate gymnastics, exploring why it should be part of a high-quality elementary physical education program and how the instructional approach used in the book differs from the traditional approach used in physical education. The material in part I will help you plan your program, incorporate it into your curriculum, and assess your students. Part II provides great learning experiences for the skill themes of traveling, statics, and rotation. Each skill theme is broken into categories that help children acquire the skills they need to learn. It’s in this portion that they develop sequences that integrate all the skills they have learned. The authors also supply an appendix with forms and handouts, cutting down your preparation time. Teaching Children Gymnastics is a great tool for novice and experienced teachers alike. More than that, it’s the perfect resource for opening up the fun and exciting world of gymnastics to youngsters who are always looking for an excuse to perform just the types of skills that they will learn—and design sequences for—through this book.
