Although their names (the Green Ones, the Pillow Gang, the Russo Gang, Egan's Rats, the Hogan Gang, the Cuckoo Gang and the Shelton Gang) are familiar to many, their exploits have remained largely undocumented until now. Learn how an awkward gunshot wound gave the Pillow Gang its name, and read why Willie Russo's bizarre midnight interview with a reporter from the St. Louis Star involved an automatic pistol and a floating hunk of cheese. From daring bank robberies to cold-blooded betrayals, The Gangs of St. Louis chronicles a fierce yet juicy slice of the Gateway City's history that rivaled anything seen in New York or Chicago.

I cracked Vann's pete," is the enigmatic reply. From this simple encounter stems the trial of the century. The crimson box does indeed hold the skull of a long-dead Chinaman (or is it?), and the man did break into D.A. Vann's safe (or did he?) One thing is certain: a man died when the safe was cracked, and now somebody has to pay. And it just may be the man's lawyer, Elsa Moffit, attorney-at-law with no cases under her belt -- yet!

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Avocado County, California, in 2008, has a murder that looks on the surface like a simple burglary turned deadly, but Sergeant Marty Jacobs thought otherwise, so he called Lieutenant Hitch Talford. An old man is found dead among more books than in any home in which Talford had been. A search that looks as if it bore no fruit; a murderer who left no clues, a deceased with checking accounts in the capitals of thirty-eight states, and assets of over a million dollars willed to the leading politician in Avocado County, who has no idea why a man he hardly knew would leave him anything. Or does he? Talford, the son of a deceased nationally known psychic, and a reader of emotions himself, attempts to reduce this case to an accident during a burglary, but is driven by baseless suspicion to the nations capital, where he comes across people who project the strongest feelings he had ever encountered. He passes murderers, witnesses a killer take out others, then watches the killer die in an accident. Washington DC, on a hot, humid, Sunday, seems like a war zone. As he later works at closing the case in the deceaseds home, he comes across ring binders with notes describing an invention that threatens the security of the nation. The old man had used it to successfully blackmail members of Congress, and legislators of thirty-eight states, to pass an amendment to the Constitution of The United States, and a bill to modify the way we elect our President, and national legislators. The product of that bill, the Federal Election Campaign Management Administration, whose authority went into effect at the time of the murder, is the backdrop of this story. The American people have gone wild; the majority of citizens came out of their passivity to become so involved with the election of the next President, members of Congress, and national ballot initiatives, that they are turning the nation into a madhouse. We meet the Directors of this new election system, and watch the media watch them do their thing, and how they feel about it. We meet intelligent people, and stupid ones. We also hear about other ideas bouncing around this new revitalized America. During his search for a solution to this case, Talford is faced with his own faults, and he must resolve them. We meet diminutive Boris Rothman who makes us laugh, but also gives us pause to consider the value of honor and trust in life and business. We meet John Maxwell Flesch who effects people as another George Washington. Will he live up to the dreams of his murdered father? Is he really meant for active politics? He has no alternative but to move ahead, or Jake Magnuson will be Governor, and a version of organized crime will run rampant. Then theres Fleschs future Presidency, for which, without a hint from anyone, FECMA had been created. The Definition Amendment freed the nation of one horrendous problem: political speech, and gave it another: the citizens right to make federal law. What does a politics-hating police lieutenant do with devastating information only he has? Thirty-year-old Hitchman Andrew Talford is faced with a decision no ordinary person should have to make. Will he reveal to the nation what had happened ten years before, or will he decide to live his life with a burden of knowledge only a person of powerful inner-strength could carry?

This book was released on 2023-05-28 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bigger’s pain is seething and unrelenting throughout Richard Wright’s bestseller novel, Native Son (1940), until he states, “Tell Jan hello” to his Lawyer Max. The pain of Richard Wright is reflected this author’s creation—a reflection of Wright’s own pain growing up in Mississippi. Born is 1908 in Roxie, Mississippi near Natchez, the writer is able to create the Bigger character who becomes the most compelling one in twentieth century American literature. Wright came to Memphis, Tennessee after graduating from Smith Robertson school in Jackson, Mississippi and in Black Boy (1945) surreptitiously gets books written by H. L. Mencken, a white male critic of the south. Wright observes Mencken using words as weapons and thinks he, too, can use words as weapons. In doing so, his novels Native Soon and Black Boy catapults his career with Native Son becoming the major black protest novel of the twentieth century. Dr. Yvonne Robinson Jones’ Genderisms: Decapitated and Smashed Heads: An Analysis of Richard Wright’s major fictions captures yet capsizes the plight of the female characters like Mary Dalton and Bessie Smears who represent the victimization and challenging plights of females not only in American society but throughout our global communities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the wake of Guantanamo Bay, extraordinary renditions, and secret torture centres in Eastern Europe and elsewhere, Revenge versus Legality addresses the relationship between law and wild or vigilante justice; between the power to enforce retribution and the desire to seek revenge. Taking up a variety of narratives from the eras of Romanticism, Realism, Modernism and the Contemporary period, and including new theories to explain the interactions that occur between legalistic courtroom justice and the vigilante variety, Revenge versus Legality analyzes some of the main obstacles to justice, ranging from judicial corruption, to racism and imperialism. The book culminates in a consideration of that form of crime or lawlessness that poses the most serious threat to the rule of law: vigilante justice masquerading as legality. With its mixture of politics, literature, law, and film, this lively and accessible book offers a timely reflection on the enduring phenomenon of revenge.
