An excellent memoir from one of Stonewall Jackson’s artillery officers who fought throughout the Civil War until final defeat. Born in Rockbridge County, Virginia in 1835, the opening of the Civil War found William T. Poague practicing law in Missouri. As the first shots began flying he repaired to his home state to offer his services to the Confederate army. He started his army life as a second lieutenant in the famous Rockbridge Virginia Artillery and would fight with gallantry, courage and great skill on many Civil War battlefields. He was engaged at First Manassas, Romney, Kernstown, the Seven Days Campaign, Cedar Mountain, Second Manassas, Harper’s Ferry Antietam, and Fredericksberg. By this time his distinguished conduct had led him to be promoted to Major and fought on at Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Cold Harbor before the final surrender at Appomattox. This edition was edited by noted Civil War historian Monroe F. Cockerell and has an excellent introduction by Bell Irwin Wiley.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Here, seen through the eyes of the men themselves, is the story of the Confederacy’s legendary Stonewall Brigade. Most Civil War accounts treat of battles and armies. The focus of this exciting account is sharper, narrower: a single brigade, the basic unit of attack of one of those armies. The Stonewall Brigade and its first commander, Thomas J. Jackson, won their nickname at the bloody baptism of First Manassas. Over the next four years "Jackson’s foot cavalry" achieved fame and sustained losses matched by few American military units before or since. There were some 2,600 men serving in the brigade at the start of the war. At Appomattox-thirty-nine engagements later-only 210 remained, none above the rank of captain. But these men from out of the Valley of Virginia had written their names upon the pages of history. In The Stonewall Brigade the author, a distinguished scholar of the Civil War, has given equal billing with the immortal Jackson to such soldiers as Lieutenant David Barton, Captain Kyd Douglas, and Private John Casler. He has attempted to capture the camp life, the marches, the personal experiences in battle rather than concentrate on well-known strategy and familiar Confederate leaders. Similarly, descriptions of battles are written from within the ranks rather than from command posts. The result is a vivid and often moving account of courage and cowardice, triumph and heartbreak-and endurance perhaps without parallel.

Their stories illustrate how devotion to the "cause" of independence, religious faith, family and community commitment to the struggle, and shared sacrifices tied these people to the flagging fortunes of the Confederacy. Included here are stories of both men and women, on the battlefield and on the homefront. John G. Selby describes in vivid prose their seven intriguing lives based on their diary entries, letters, and memoirs. Through the lives of these men and women, readers will come to understand what the war meant to those who fought and survived it. About the Author Dr. John G. Selby is the recipient of numerous awards and honors for his work in American and world history. In his twenty-two year career, he has taught on modern America, the Civil War, the Vietnam War, modern Middle East, and world history. He is currently professor of history at Roanoke College in Salem, Virginia.

Book excerpt: This volume explores the Shenandoah Valley campaign, best known for its role in establishing Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson's reputation as the Confederacy's greatest military idol. The authors address questions of military leadership, strategy and tactics, the campaign's political and social impact, and the ways in which participants' memories of events differed from what is revealed in the historical sources. In the process, they offer valuable insights into one of the Confederacy's most famous generals, those who fought with him and against him, the campaign's larger importance in the context of the war, and the complex relationship between history and memory. The contributors are Jonathan M. Berkey, Keith S. Bohannon, Peter S. Carmichael, Gary W. Gallagher, A. Cash Koeniger, R. E. L. Krick, Robert K. Krick, and William J. Miller.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What can we learn about leadership and the experience of war from the best combat leaders the world has ever known? This book takes us behind the scenes and to the front lines of the major wars of the past 250 years through the words of twenty combat commanders. What they have to say--which is remarkably similar across generational, national, and ideological divides--is a fascinating take on military history by those who lived it. It is also worthwhile reading for anyone, from any walk of life, who makes executive decisions. The leaders showcased here range from Frederick the Great to Norman Schwarzkopf. They include such diverse figures as Napoleon Bonaparte, commanders on both sides of the Civil War (William Tecumseh Sherman and Stonewall Jackson), German and American World War II generals (Rommel and Patton), a veteran of the Arab-Israeli wars (Moshe Dayan), and leaders from both sides of the Vietnam War (Vo Nguyen Giap and Harold Moore). What they have had in common is an unrivaled understanding of the art of command and a willingness to lead from the front. All earned the respect and loyalty of those they led--and moved them to risk death. The practices of these commanders apply to any leadership situation, whether military, business, political, athletic, or other. Their words reveal techniques for anticipating the competition, leading through example, taking care of the "troops," staying informed, turning bad luck to advantage, improvising, and making bold decisions. Leader after leader emphasizes the importance of up-front "muddy boots" leadership and reveals what it takes to persevere and win. Identifying a pattern of proven leadership, this book will benefit anyone who aspires to lead a country, a squadron, a company, or a basketball team. It is a unique distillation of two and a half centuries of military wisdom.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Confederate soldier Edward A. Moore gives a history of the American Civil War in his memoir "The Story of a Cannoneer Under Stonewall Jackson". The title of the book at once rivets attention and invites perusal, and that perusal does not disappoint expectation. The author was a cannoneer in the historic Rockbridge (Virginia) Artillery, which made for itself, from Manassas to Appomattox, a reputation second to none in the Confederate service. No more vivid picture has been presented of the private soldier in camp, on the march, or in action. It was written evidently not with any commercial view, but was an undertaking from a conviction that its performance was a question of duty to his comrades. Its unlabored and spontaneous character adds to its value. Its detail is evidence of a living presence, intent only upon truth. It is not only carefully planned, but minutely finished. The duty has been performed faithfully and entertainingly.

Book excerpt: Stonewall Speaks is the fictional depiction of the adventurous but brief life of the famous Confederate general Thomas Jonathan "Stonewall" Jackson. Jackson grew up working on a farm and a corn-grinding mill in Clarksburg, Virginia. His life changes forever when he receives his appointment to attend West Point. Author Claude Brown imagines how actual historical events might have played out during the mid-1800s, as Stonewall's ghost narrates. Stonewall meets his first friend, Ulysses S. Grant, on the train to West Point. At the Academy, he faces conflict with A. P. Hill (a conflict that will turn out to be lifelong). Grant and Stonewall serve together in the Mexican War and (on opposing sides) during the Civil War, where Stonewall shines as Lee's greatest general. The twice-married Jackson receives his famous nickname from General Bernard Bee on the battlefield at First Manassas when Jackson's demeanor inspires Bee to shout to his troops, "Look, men, there is Jackson standing like a stone wall!" General Stonewall bravely commands thousands of soldiers during his military career. Stonewall Speaks will transport you on a fictitious journey through Confederate General Stonewall's circle of life, which includes all those things that are important to a man who must lead his troops to victory--love, friendship, and conflict.
