Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Inspired by the Famous Curves Index of the award-winning website by MacTutor History of Mathematics archive maintained by John J. O'Connor and Edmund F. Robertson and hosted by the University of St Andrews, the author wrote this handbook of famous plane curves using Mathematica® as a tool to graph, animate, calculate and to construct derived curves from given ones. Some constructions are extremely difficult to draw by hands, especially those involve numerical integration can be performed with ease with Mathematica®. Even for some simple curves before the invention of computer, drawing them by hands might take a long time. To borrow the words of Rudy Rucker (author of The Fourth Dimension): "if the only thing you're going to be remembered for in 300 years is one single curve, then you don't mind spending a year or two in getting it right!" Plane curves had been studied since antiquity. However, the general theory of plane curves began to be developed only after the invention of Cartesian coordinates by Descartes in the early 1600s. The discovery of calculus in the 17th century led to the study of more complicated plane curves. The methods of calculus, in particular integration, provides solution of finding the arc length and area of a plane curve. Plane curves are of historical interest. It could be said that significant part of classical mathematics deal with them. Most books on history of mathematics include information on various plane curves. Plane curves remain a source of inspiration and a topic of research to this day. Whenever it is applicable the author mentions some research papers in which the curves are used for applications in modern science and technology.

Book excerpt: This open access book offers a timely guide to challenges and current practices to permanently plug and abandon hydrocarbon wells. With a focus on offshore North Sea, it analyzes the process of plug and abandonment of hydrocarbon wells through the establishment of permanent well barriers. It provides the reader with extensive knowledge on the type of barriers, their functioning and verification. It then discusses plug and abandonment methodologies, analyzing different types of permanent plugging materials. Last, it describes some tests for verifying the integrity and functionality of installed permanent barriers. The book offers a comprehensive reference guide to well plugging and abandonment (P&A) and well integrity testing. The book also presents new technologies that have been proposed to be used in plugging and abandoning of wells, which might be game-changing technologies, but they are still in laboratory or testing level. Given its scope, it addresses students and researchers in both academia and industry. It also provides information for engineers who work in petroleum industry and should be familiarized with P&A of hydrocarbon wells to reduce the time of P&A by considering it during well planning and construction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present crude oil and natural gas reservoirs around the world have depleted conventional production levels. To continue enhancing productivity for the remaining mature reservoirs, drilling decision-makers could no longer rely on traditional balanced or overbalanced methods of drilling. Derived from conventional air drilling, underbalanced drilling is increasingly necessary to meet today’s energy and drilling needs. While more costly and extreme, underbalanced drilling can minimize pressure within the formation, increase drilling rate of penetration, reduce formation damage and lost circulation, making mature reservoirs once again viable and more productive. To further explain this essential drilling procedure, Bill Rehm, an experienced legend in drilling along with his co-editors, has compiled a handbook perfect for the drilling supervisor. Underbalanced Drilling: Limits and Extremes, written under the auspices of the IADC Technical Publications Committee, contain many great features and contributions including: Real case studies shared by major service companies to give the reader guidelines on what might happen in actual operations Questions and answers at the end of the chapters for upcoming engineers to test their knowledge Common procedures, typical and special equipment involved, and most importantly, the limits and challenges that still surround this technology

It focusses on the processes and the hydrogeological and geochemical factors that affect their performance. This book is written from an applied perspective with a focus of taking advantage of global historical experiences, both positive and negative, as a guide to future implementation. Most AAR techniques are now mature technologies in that they have been employed for some time, their scientific background is well understood, and their initial operational challenges and associated solutions have been identified. However, opportunities exist for improved implementation and some recently employed and potential future innovations are presented. AAR which includes managed aquifer recharge (MAR) is a very important area of water resources management and there is no recent books that specifically and comprehensively addresses the subject.

Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to geologists; geotechnical, construction, and maintenance engineers; other state department of transportation (DOT) personnel involved with the planning, design, and permit issuance for conduits beneath roadways; local transportation agencies; utility contractors and consultants; and trenchless construction equipment manufacturers. It describes the current state of the practice for the use of trenchless technology for installing conduits beneath roadways. Trenchless construction is a process of installing, rehabilitating, or replacing underground utility systems without open-cut excavation. The synthesis is focused on trenchless technology for new installations. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the trenchless installation technologies (methods, materials, and equipment) currently employed by state DOTs and other agencies to install conduits beneath roadways. The synthesis presents data obtained from a review of the literature and a survey of transportation agencies. For each technology identified, information is provided to describe the range of applications, basis for technique selection, site specific design factors to be considered, relative costs, common environmental issues, and example specifications. In addition, information on emerging technologies and research needs is presented.
