Book excerpt: To describe laboratory methods for determining and reporting the contaminant level of the wetted portion of hydraulic fluid power components, parts, subsystems and systems, and of fill fluids. For each type of item it provides a method of obtaining the liquid sample and the contamination level thereof. It also includes procedures for establishing a sampling plan and guidelines for establishing levels of acceptance, but does not set those levels. To provide a basis for measuring and reporting cleanliness levels so that built-in contamination and premature failures of hydraulic systems can minimized.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contamination control in a hydraulic system means that the filtration equipment of a system has established a fluid contamination level which is within the contaminant tolerance specifications of the hydraulic components. Such a control condition is not beyond the realm of practicality and must be achieved if hydraulic systems are to function in an optimal manner. Sufficient technology has been developed to permit the specification of the requirements for achieving, maintaining, and appraising contamination control conditions.

Book excerpt: This SAE Recommended Practice defines a procedure, which will aid in assessing the contaminant sensitivity of hydraulic valves. The approach taken defines a test procedure with flexibility for testing valves in a wide range of contamination levels. The user of this procedure must establish the contamination levels for testing. Three levels are suggested which should cover the range for most valve applications. This procedure does not establish the contaminant sensitivity requirements for any valve. The user of this procedure needs to be aware of the system contamination level that the valve will operate in and select test contamination levels significantly higher than the operating level to assess the suitability of the valve. The test procedure permits a valve to be tested without disassembly and therefore permits protection of proprietary design information. This procedure assesses the contamination sensitivity of valves by contaminant lock. The procedure indicates the sensitivity of valves by contaminant lock due to various sizes of contaminants. The test is designed to assess the contaminant sensitivity of valves in tests of relatively short duration. See Appendix A for guidance as to how the tests and their results may be used. The tests are purposely designed to be severe in order to be applicable to a wide range of contaminated environments. The use of valves in many applications and for various purposes results in differing levels of acceptable performance. That is, the same valve may be unacceptable - in relation to operation in a contaminated environment - in one application and be acceptable in another. The user must make that decision based on a review of the expected level of the specific application and the test results obtained. NOTE - See 7.2 if document is to be contractually invoked.

Book excerpt: In hydraulic fluid power systems, power is transmitted and controlled through a liquid under pressure within an enclosed circuit. The liquid is both a lubricant and power-transmitting medium. Reliable system performance requires control of the fluid medium. Qualitative and quantitative determination of particulate contamination in the fluid medium requires precision in obtaining the sample and in determining the nature and extent of the contamination. The gravimetrics method of determination of fluid contamination involves weighing suspended solids per unit volume of fluid. The method employs membrane filters, which maintain fluid cleanliness by removing insoluble particles.

Book excerpt: The scope of this Aerospace Recommended Practice (ARP) covers where, when, and how often to sample hydraulic system fluid on aerospace vehicles for particulate contamination measurements. The measurement of hydraulic fluid particulate contamination is of concern to the aerospace community because of the critical importance of hydraulic equipment reliability. Contamination is always present in the system fluid, even in new unused fluid. Contamination must be below a level that will not adversely affect system operation. This ARP draws from aerospace industry experience and practice to establish criteria for fluid contamination sampling recommendations in aerospace vehicle hydraulic systems. Fluid samples can then be subjected to measurement of particulate contamination and of other harmful contaminants such as chlorinated solvents and water.
