Book excerpt: Presenting the latest research discussed at the Twelfth International Conference on Computer Aided Optimum Design in Engineering, this book contains papers describing case studies in engineering; considering static, dynamic analysis and damage tolerance. Manufacturing and structural protection issues are discussed as well as emergent applications in fields such as biomechanics. Contributions also include numerical methods and different optimisation techniques.Nowadays, it is widely accepted that optimisation techniques have much to offer to those involved in the design of new industrial products. The formulation of optimum design has evolved from the time it was purely an academic topic, unable now to satisfy the requirements of real life prototypes. The development of new algorithms, the improvement of others, the appearance of powerful commercial computer codes with easy to use graphical interfaces and the revolution in the speed of computers has created a fertile field for the incorporation of optimisation in the design process in different engineering disciplines Topics covered include: Structural optimisation, Optimisation in biomechanics, Shape and topology optimisation, Industrial design optimisation cases, Evolutionary methods in design optimisation, Multi-level optimisation, Multidisciplinary optimisation, Reliability based optimisation, Material optimisation, Aerospace structures, Applications in mechanical and car engineering, New and enhanced formulations, Optimisation under extreme forces, Optimisation in aerodynamics, Optimisation in civil engineering, Life cost optimisation, Education issues in design optimisation, Commercial software for design optimisation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Portland cement is an essential ingredient in concrete. The use of cement is to enhance the strength as well as other hardened properties of concrete mixtures. Determining the accurate amount of cement is important because the required strength may not be achieved if not enough cement is used. By contrast, when using too much cement, concrete cracking may occur that leads to reducing durability. Researchers at the University of Arkansas (UA) have shown that many bridge decks achieve their 28 day design strength of 4000 psi by 7 days of age. Bridge decks having high strength may experience cracking, which affects the durability. The Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) classifies two types of concrete mixtures that can be used in bridges. The first is Class S concrete, and the second is Class S(AE). Class S is used for the structural components and does not contain air entrainment while Class S (AE) is mainly used for bridge decks and contains air entrainment. AHTD requires the same minimum cementitious material content for both classes of concrete. The purpose of this research is to determine if the cementitious material content of Class S mixtures can be reduced while still meeting AHTD specifications. The research program examined cementitious material content, Class C fly ash content, and water to cementitious material ratio (w/cm) . For all mixtures, selected fresh and hardened concrete properties were measured to ensure that they complied with AHTD requirements.

This book was released on 2007 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study takes a detailed look at the factors that affect the durability of concrete and how they can be applied to the development of a useful performance specification and help to extend the life of bridge decks and other concrete structures exposed to the elements of nature. A series of fifteen mixes (with varying cement contents and water/cement ratios) were performed in order to determine exactly which of these factors have a significant effect on the durability of a concrete mix. Controlling the water/cement ratio is necessary in order to control strength and permeability. Cement content was found to have little bearing on strength while the amount of cement affected the shrinkage significantly. Shrinkage is also dramatically affected by the amount of water in the mix. The results of the mixes were then used to develop a new specification for a bridge deck mix that will potentially improve the lifespan of bridge decks. Prescriptive versus performance specifications were also explored with the benefits and deficiencies of each form of specification looked at in detail.

Book excerpt: "This guide specification is intended to serve as a guide for developing specifications for all high performance concretes supplied for highway bridges, whether produced by a ready mix supplier, a general contractor, or in a permanent plant of a precast concrete manufacturer. For the purposes of this specification, high performance concrete (HPC) is considered as concrete engineered to meet specific needs of a project; including: mechanical, durability, or constructability properties. The document provides mandatory language that the specifier can cut and paste into project specifications. It also includes guidance on what characteristics should be specified in a given case, and what performance limit is needed to ensure satisfactory performance for a given element or environment"--P. ii.

Book excerpt: Concretes for bridge repair that attained 3,000 psi compressive strength within 10 hours, 1 day, and 7 days and had high workability and durability were investigated in the laboratory. Supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs) were used in concrete with portland cement to make the mixture resist the penetration of harmful solutions and chemical attack. These concretes were air entrained for proper resistance to cycles of freezing and thawing. When high early strength was needed, high amounts of portland cement and low water–cementitious materials ratios were used in these concretes that made them prone to cracking. However, fibers were investigated to control the cracking. Mixtures with rapid setting cement were also tested for high early strengths.Test results indicated that with high amounts of portland cement with an SCM or the use of rapid setting cement, desired strength can be achieved within 10 hours. To achieve 3,000 psi in 1 day and 7 days, lower amounts of portland cement with anSCM and overall lower paste contents were used, making them less prone to cracking. The study recommends that high amounts of portland cements with SCMs be used to achieve 3,000 psi within 10 hours with setting times long enough for mixing and delivery by truck mixers and placement. These concretes may need to be insulated at the jobsite to retain heat to ensure early strengths are achieved. If shorter setting times can be accommodated using on-site mobile mixers, rapid setting cement can beused to achieve a 3,000psi compressive strength within a few hours, i.e., much less than 10 hours. For longer times, more than 1day, to attain 3,000 psi, portland cements containing SCMs with a low cementitious materials content should be used; theyare cost-effective, easier to make, and have less cracking potential than the high early strength mixtures with portland cement with an SCM. If cracking is anticipated, fibers can be added. In the laboratory, an efficient pan type mixer was used to obtain uniform blending of ingredients and good distribution of fibers. In future field work, large quantities of material would be mixed and delivered in ready mixed concrete trucks or mobile mixers, which are not as efficient as laboratory mixers. Use of ready mixedtrucks and mobilemixers to provide the recommended mixtures needsto be investigated to identify any issues and to streamline the implementation of the mixtures.
