Download or read book Guidelines for Attachments to Bridge Rails and Median Barriers written by Eric A. Keller and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the research project was to collect crash test data relating to bridge rails and median barriers, to collect information about common attachments to traffic barriers, and to evaluate this information for the purpose of developing guidelines for the design and placement of traffic barrier attachments. A comprehensive review of full-scale crash testing of bridge rails and median barriers was conducted in order to establish Zones of Intrusion (ZOIs) for traffic barriers. The primary goal of this review was to identify the extent that a pickup or single-unit truck intrudes over the top of a traffic barrier during a vehicular impact.

Download or read book Roadside Design Guide written by American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials. Task Force for Roadside Safety and published by AASHTO. This book was released on 2011 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Roadside Design Guide presents a synthesis of current information and operating practices related to roadside safety and is written in dual units-metric and U.S. Customary. This book is a guide. It is not a standard, nor is it a design policy. It is intended to use as a resource document from which individual highway agencies can develop standards and policies. Although much of the material in the guide can be considered universal in its application, several recommendations are subjective in nature and may need modification to fit local conditions. However, it is important that significant deviations from the guide be based on operational experience and objective analysis. The 2011 edition of the AASHTO Roadside Design Guide has been updated to include hardware that has met the evaluation criteria contained in the National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 350: Recommended Procedures for the Safety Performance Evaluation of Highway Features and begins to detail the most current evaluation criteria contained under the Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware, 2009 (MASH). For the most part, roadside hardware tested and accepted under older guidelines that are no longer applicable has not been excluded in this edition." -- AASHTO website.
Book Synopsis Guide for Selecting, Locating and Designing Traffic Barriers. Volume I - Guidelines. Final Report by : H. E. Ross (Jr)
Download or read book Guide for Selecting, Locating and Designing Traffic Barriers. Volume I - Guidelines. Final Report written by H. E. Ross (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1976 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The guide presents the results of a synthesis of current information on the various elements of traffic barrier systems, including warrants, structural and strength characteristics, maintenance characteristics, selection criteria, and placement data. Criteria on these elements are summarized for each of the four basic barrier types, namely, roadside barriers (heretofore commonly referred to as guardrails), median barriers, bridge rails and crash cushions. A chapter on a cost-effective selection procedure is included, primarily to provide the highway engineer with an alternate approach to the more conventional means of establishing barrier need and a barrier selection if warranted.

Book excerpt: The development of the self-restoring (SERB) guardrail system for the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) demonstrated that a high performance flexible barrier that was damage resistant was technically and economically feasible. This report (Volume I) describes the design and development of the SERB bridge rail retrofit and SERB median barrier systems which have been fully evaluated. The barriers were subjected to a full range of impacts including 40,000-lb (18,000-kg) buses and 1,800-lb (800-kg) cars.

Download or read book Longitudinal Barriers for Buses and Trucks written by Teddy James Hirsch and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive effort has been made to develop longitudinal barriers capable of restraining and redirecting buses and large trucks. The results of 34 crash tests conducted using cars and mostly buses and trucks on 16 different longitudinal barriers were obtained from the references. Results of these crash tests are summarized. Theory and crash test results are presented to demonstrate the magnitude of the impact forces these longitudinal barriers must resist and how high they must be to prevent vehicle rollover.
