Book excerpt: "Cop Doc's Guide to Public Safety Complex Trauma Syndrome" is written in response to the need for an advanced, specialized guide for clinicians to operationally define, understand, and responsibly treat complex post-traumatic stress and grief syndromes in the context of the unique varieties of police personality styles. The book continues where Rudofossi's first book, "Working with Traumatized Police Officer Patients", left off. Theory is wed to practice and practice to effective interventions with police officer-patients. The 'how' and 'why' of a clinician's approach is made highly effective by understanding the distinct personality styles of officer-patients. Rudofossi's theoretical approach segues into difficult examples that highlight each officer-patient's eco-ethological field experience of loss in trauma, with a focus on enhancing resilience and motivation to - otherwise left disenfranchised. Thus, this original work expands the ecological-ethological existential analysis of complex PTSD into the context of personality styles, with an emphasis on resilience - without ignoring the pathological aspects of loss that often envelop officer-patient trauma syndromes.

Book excerpt: What is PTSD? Can you get PTSD from emotional abuse? How long does it take PTSD to develop? How can you support someone with PTSD? If you wish to know the answers to these questions, then keep reading! PTSD is a condition that affects certain individuals who have been through a traumatic, frightening, or hazardous incident. It's normal to be scared during and after a terrible event. Fear causes a slew of split-second physiological changes to protect against or escape harm. This "flight-or-fight" response is a common one designed to keep a person safe. After a traumatic event, almost everyone will have a variety of responses, but the majority of individuals will heal spontaneously from the first symptoms. Those who persist in having issues might be diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Even if they're not in danger, people with PTSD may feel tense or afraid. PTSD symptoms may strike at any time. If you have post-traumatic stress disorder, you've undoubtedly recognized a number of behaviors, settings, and events that tend to set off your symptoms. You keep an eye out for them and try to stay a safe distance from them. However, there is always the possibility that you'll be exposed to a new or different PTSD trigger event, putting you at risk for episodes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: PTSD is in no way an easy diagnosis for the patient, the provider, or the therapist. It is a diagnosis developed at the border of our capacity to handle extreme stress, a marker diagnosis denoting the limits of our capacity for functioning in the stress of this modern world. For both individuals and society, PTSD marks the limits of our available compassion and our capacity to protect ourselves from the dangers of the environment and other humans. PTSD is often a chronic disease, forming at a place where mind sometimes no longer equals the brain, a point at which individual patient requirements often trump theory and belief. There are treatments for PTSD that work, and many that do not. This book presents evidence, rather than theory, anecdote, or case report. Psychological approaches including prolonged exposure, imagery rehearsal therapy and EMDR have a greater than 75% positive short-term response when used to treat PTSD. Yet these treatments vary markedly and have different, even contradictory underlying theory and objectives for treatment. Medications, rarely indicated as primary therapy, can be used to treat symptoms and address comorbid PTSD diagnoses. Treatment of sleep apnea in the PTSD population produces a positive effect on symptoms and a reduction in morbidity and mortality across the span of life. Complementary treatments offer the many individuals chronically affected by PTSD assistance in coping with symptoms and opportunities to attempt to functionally integrate their experience of trauma.
