Download or read book Beyond Tithing written by Stuart Murray and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2011-12-19 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Tithing is biblical but not Christian." So asserts Dr. Stuart Murray in this radical examination of the contemporary practice of tithing in which the author comes to some surprising conclusions. Stuart Murray clearly explains tithing in the Old Testament and in Christian history, but then probes further, asking penetrating questions such as: "Is tithing Christian?" "Did Jesus tithe?" "Does tithing function as a regressive tax, burdening the poor while the rich get richer?" "Does tithing lead to a legalistic approach that alienates us from Jesus?" The author suspects that a lot of the current lack of interest in the church stems from deep-seated memories of the church as oppressive, uncreative, and money-grabbing. In response we should therefore learn not to calculate percentages but explore creative ways of developing communities of justice and generosity that are good news to the poor. Beyond Tithing will stimulate your thinking and challenge the dominant influence of the practice of tithing as the model for Christian stewardship.

Book Synopsis George Pitt-Rivers and the Nazis by : Bradley W. Hart
Download or read book George Pitt-Rivers and the Nazis written by Bradley W. Hart and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-10-29 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: George Pitt-Rivers began his career as one of Britain's most promising young anthropologists, conducting research in the South Pacific and publishing articles in the country's leading academic journals. With a museum in Oxford bearing his family name, Pitt-Rivers appeared to be on track for a sterling academic career that might even have matched that of his grandfather, one of the most prominent archaeologists of his day. By the early 1930s, however, Pitt-Rivers had turned from his academic work to politics. Writing a series of books attacking international communism and praising the ideas of Benito Mussolini and Adolf Hitler, Pitt-Rivers fell into the circles of the anti-Semitic far right. In 1937 he attended the Nuremberg Rally and personally met Adolf Hitler and other leading Nazis. With the outbreak of war in 1940 Pitt-Rivers was arrested and interned by the British government on the suspicion that he might harm the war effort by publicly sharing his views, effectively ending his academic career. This book traces the remarkable career of a man who might have been remembered as one of Britain's leading 20th century anthropologists but instead became involved in a far-right milieu that would result in his professional ruin and the relegation of most of his research to margins of scientific history. At the same time, his wider legacy would persist far beyond the academic sphere and can be found to the present day.
Book Synopsis A Guide to the LCIA Arbitration Rules by : Peter Turner
Download or read book A Guide to the LCIA Arbitration Rules written by Peter Turner and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2009-03-19 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The London Court of Arbitration (LCIA) is one of the world's foremost arbitration institutions, with a growing annual caseload. The LCIA Arbitration Rules are among the most modern and forward-looking of the various sets of institutional arbitration rules but until now have not been the subject of in-depth study. This is the first full length and comprehensive commentary on the rules, written by two well-known and experienced arbitration practitioners. Portable and functional, this book acts as a guide and provides an indispensable resource for all involved in international arbitration under the LCIA rules. Grouped thematically, the commentary to each rule provides 1) a description of the rule and its intended meaning 2) the provenance and history of the rule 3) the practical effect of the rule with reference to previous case law and jurisprudence and 4) a comparative look at conceptual and practical differences between each rule. Focusing specifically on how the rules of the LCIA differ from those of the ICC and the UNCITRAL, this title emphasises the international nature of the LCIA and provides the only dedicated reference to the Rules.
