Book excerpt: The purpose of this research project was to create a guide for use by the employee as well as the supervisor when dealing with matters of discipline. The need for such a guide became evident during this past year when the disciplinary process had to be put in motion and an employee terminated. This is the first time in over ten years that an employee had to be terminated from our department. It became apparent that the employees were not aware of their rights and means of recourse. During this process I spent countless hours in meetings or on the phone with the Employee Relations Department to ensure that the measures I was taking were correct. My superiors also requested that they be kept informed of the employees progress and the effects of progressive discipline on the employee.

Book Synopsis The Manager's Guide to Discipline by : Derek Eccleston
Download or read book The Manager's Guide to Discipline written by Derek Eccleston and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-05-15 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For most managers, let alone the employees involved, the disciplinary process can be painful and embarrassing. Poor performance tends to be confused with misconduct and consequently carries the stigma of punishment; this despite the fact that most company policies and indeed the ACAS Code (correctly) put emphasis on improving behaviour or performance, rather than punishment. Derek Eccleston's concise guide provides a clear picture of the purpose and the process of the disciplinary procedure. This toolkit approach contains invaluable information and includes clear checklists and sample letters to help guide managers and supervisors through the minefield of employment rights, explaining what to do and how to do it. Written in a no nonsense way, The Manager's Guide to Discipline is free of legal jargon and focuses on the practical issues throughout. It will help to protect the organisation, whilst ensuring matters are dealt with, not left or brushed under the carpet because of a lack of management confidence. This essential reference will encourage managers to approach performance and disciplinary problems proactively and with more confidence and will significantly reduce the risk of getting it wrong.

Book excerpt: "Much of the professional literature has focused on what disciplinary literacy entails; this valuable contribution explores how it can be implemented in complex school settings." —Doug Buehl, Author of Developing Readers in the Academic Disciplines What happens when middle and high school teachers who know their content very well are told they should be teaching reading and writing too? Is there a bit of resistance? A decrease in self-efficacy? An overturning of curricula? In Disciplinary Literacy in Action, ReLeah Cossett Lent and Marsha Voigt show us a better way. In this sequel to ReLeah’s bestselling This Is Disciplinary Literacy, the authors provide educators with what they’ve wanted all along: a framework that keeps their subjects at the center and shows them how to pool strengths with colleagues in ongoing communities of professional learning (PL) around content-specific literacy. The authors know it works not just because the research says so, but also because they have spent years refining the model in schools, districts, and regions. With this book, you will be ready for Collaborative learning that preserves discipline-specific content yet keeps innovative daily practices of reading, writing, thinking, and doing at the forefront Planning by autonomous literacy leadership teams with administrative support Implementation augmented by peer and disciplinary literacy coaching Reflection that leads to ongoing collective problem solving In the end, it all comes back to how content teachers can best help students use literacy in all its forms to learn more deeply.
