Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to provide suggestions and to identify future research that would assist in removing or relaxing barriers to the development of housing on contaminated sites. The first chapter provides an overview of the topic of contaminated sites and housing. Chapter 2 reviews the process for approving land development, including options for site assessment, remediation, and contaminant management. Chapter 3 explores Canadian legislation, and accompanying policies and guidelines, that apply when developing contaminated sites for housing. It also reviews progress on implementation of the 13 principles prepared by the Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment. Chapter 4 discusses issues that may act as barriers to the development of housing on contaminated sites, such as regulations, liability, and availability of suitable remediation technologies. Chapter 5 presents some best practices that should help to remove those barriers, along with initiatives that can be undertaken to pursue those practices. Appendices include case studies and reviews of applicable legislation.
