[Author] The document provides information for minimum guidance to implement a CE programme at the country level. [Author] The need for field epidemiologists to strengthen a country’s capabilities in disease surveillance, outbreak investigation and response is recognized by the global health sector. [Author] Several countries already have applied epidemiology training programmes (e. [Author]g. [Author], FETP, FETPV, ISAVET) to develop or strengthen these capabilities. [Author] FAO, WHO and WOAH recognize that One Health is an integral part of these programmes, in accordance with the definition of One Health from the One Health High-Level Expert Panel. [Author]

Book excerpt: Following the 27th Tripartite Annual Executive Meeting, the FAO Programme Committee in its 130th session, March 2021, requested the joint development, by the Tripartite (FAO/WHO/WOAH) and others, of a strategy and action plan to prevent future zoonotic pandemics through the One Health approach. The One Health Joint Plan of Action (OH JPA) is intended to guide the four organizations of the Quadripartite to work together on One Health with the aim of supporting their Members to build One Health capacities. It provides a framework for action and proposes a set of activities that the four organizations can offer together to enable countries to advance and scale up One Health in managing human, animal, plant and environment health threats. The framework uses a One Health approach to strengthen collaboration, communication, advocacy, and coordination equally across all sectors responsible for addressing health concerns at the human-animal-plant-environment interface.

This book was released on 2019-03-11 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 2018 FAO-OIE-WHO (Tripartite) zoonoses guide, “Taking A Multisectoral, One Health Approach: A Tripartite Guide to Addressing Zoonotic Diseases in Countries” (2018 TZG) is being jointly developed to provide member countries with practical guidance on OH approaches to build national mechanisms for multisectoral coordination, communication, and collaboration to address zoonotic disease threats at the animal-human-environment interface. The 2018 TZG updates and expands on the guidance in the one previous jointly-developed, zoonoses-specific guidance document: the 2008 Tripartite “Zoonotic Diseases: A Guide to Establishing Collaboration between Animal and Human Health Sectors at the Country Level”, developed in WHO South-East Asia Region and Western Pacific Region. The 2018 TZG supports building by countries of the resilience and capacity to address emerging and endemic zoonotic diseases such as avian influenza, rabies, Ebola, and Rift Valley fever, as well as food-borne diseases and antimicrobial resistance, and to minimize their impacts on health, livelihoods, and economies. It additionally supports country efforts to implement WHO International Health Regulations (2005) and OIE international standards, to address gaps identified through external and internal health system evaluations, and to achieve targets of the Sustainable Development Goals. The 2018 TZG provides relevant country ministries and agencies with lessons learned and good practices identified from country-level experiences in taking OH approaches for preparedness, prevention, detection and response to zoonotic disease threats, and provides guidance on multisectoral communication, coordination, and collaboration. It informs on regional and country-level OH activities and relevant unisectoral and multisectoral tools available for countries to use.

Book excerpt: Epidemiology workforce capacity development is a key part of strengthening Animal Health Systems. The aim of a field epidemiology training programme is to improve the institutional capacity to detect, prevent, control, and manage animal diseases that negatively impact animal and human health, farmers’ livelihoods, food security, and trade. These guidelines provide an eight-step approach to develop competency based training programmes, from assessment of the needs and readiness of a country or region, to developing, planning, implementing, and monitoring and assessment of the impact of field epidemiology training programs. A set of core competencies developed by a participative and inclusive process, for frontline and intermediate levels, are provided to guide the development of curriculum and strategic plans to better achieve field epidemiology training programme sustainability. These guidelines should assist in addressing the veterinary services and animal health systems’ needs and priorities including field epidemiology workforce capacity development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Field epidemiology involves the application of epidemiologic methods to unexpected health problems when a rapid on-site investigation is necessary for timely intervention. Based on decades of experience in both infectious and noninfectious diseases at the Centers for Disease Control andPrevention, this book describes in simple and practical terms the distinct approach, tasks, and actions needed for successful field investigations. Guidance is given on such issues as how to perform surveillance, manage and execute field investigations, collect and analyze data, perform surveys, adapt a personal computer for field use, and communicate the findings. Specific advice is also given on such subjects as dealing with the media; investigations in health care, day care, and international settings; and the legal aspects of field studies. An entire chapter covers the propercollection, handling, and testing of infectious and noninfectious agents in the field. In the Second Edition, four new chapters cover many unique aspects of field studies in the workplace, after natural disasters, in preparation for and response to possible bioterrorist attacks, and by state andlocal health departments. Finally, an appendix describes how to investigate a common source food-borne epidemic. This text gives public health professionals and students a practical and complete refernece to use in virtually any field investigation setting.

Book excerpt: Veterinary sciences include but exceed the study of domestic and non-domestic non-human species. The emergence of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has renewed and expanded the need of “one health” approaches –that is, the study of any biological process that involves interactions within and across species (humans included). Unintentionally but directly, COVID-19 has changed or may change everything – including veterinary sciences. For example, a field poorly developed before 2019 (bat immunology) is now, potentially, at the crossroads that connect infectious diseases affecting all vertebrates. Research associated with COVID-19 has facilitated or may promote the development and convergence of numerous technologies, theories, and methods. They include, although are not limited to (i) geographical information systems (which allow the study of actual factors found in the environment), (ii) cost-benefit oriented techniques, and (iii) data-driven (“top-down”) research designs, which identify questions and discover potential problems.

This book was released on 2021-08-31 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public health emergencies continually reinforce the need for an integrated approach to health systems strengthening, underpinned by a public health approach, helping to build health systems resilience. As part of a collaboration between the USAID Office of the Health Systems and the WHO Integrated Health Services Department, a strategic meeting was convened on 14 April 2021. This had wide-ranging representation which included WHO Deputy Director-General, Executive leadership from USAID, IANPHI and WFPHA. The overarching aim was to examine this topic together and identify actionable steps to build an integrated approach to health system strengthening that brings together health security, humanitarian, disease-specific and life-course-specific programmes. The specific objectives of the meeting were to: facilitate strategic discussions on prevailing practices in health systems resilience for health protection and high-quality health services, to determine actionable next steps for global guidance; inform policy options for WHO, USAID and partners to maximize joint country support for health systems resilience; and identify immediate priorities for next steps following the meeting. To inform and support the proceedings of this meeting, complementary desk reviews were conducted to synthesise evidence, and inform the discussions and way forward. Together, this package consists of (i) a technical meeting report and (ii) two complementary desk reviews. The package was co-developed with and has received concurrence from the USAID Office of the Health Systems.
