In this new anecdotal but thoroughly practical book, Peter Alliss sets out to promote golf as the answer to middle-aged discontentment. Peter Alliss has no difficulty giving compelling reasons as to why golf is the perfect game for adults - breathtaking scenery, fresh air, camaraderie and instant therapy. The author describes how to go about taking up the game, what equipment is necessary to buy and who to contact for lessons. With the aid of line drawings, he describes the basic techniques of golf, how to maintain a consistent swing and how to build up self-confidence. GOLF - THE CURE FOR A GRUMPY OLD MAN is aimed at regular golfers whose skills have deteriorated and would-be golfers who need the guidance as to which path to follow. Alliss's humorous but always helpful book will confirm the great game as a really accessible and hugely enjoyable pastime to pursue for both men and women.

Book excerpt: What do Postman Pat, Tommy Cooper, Norman Wisdom and George Best have in common with being abandoned in a Costa Rican jungle after a severe bout of flatulence? Indeed, how are they also connected to trying to buy an Australian brewery just to get a beer, owning twenty-two cars, an American soccer team and a Swiss mail-order pornography company? The common feature is of course a certain Richard Wakeman. The Further Adventures of a Grumpy Old Rock Star takes you, the privileged reader, on a trip of absurd excess, a cultural car crash of side-splitting hilarity and an unforgettable glimpse (again) into the life of one of Britain's most legendary showmen, rock stars and all-time great raconteurs.

Book excerpt: The next time you play golf leave your woods at home, putt with your 2-iron, and you will be on your way to shooting in the 70s. Sounds radical? Well, you're right on par! Golf enthusiast Michael Laughlin, whose day job is in the film business, reveals his proven, but completely radical strategies that average golfers can use to dramatically lower their score. In Radical Golf, Laughlin rethinks how the game of golf is traditionally played and shares his surprising and innovative ideas on how to play better golf. Unlike the usual technique-riddled golf books, Radical Golf offers practical and easy-to-use tips, and is written for the legion of average players who will never have the long, crunching power game of the professional. "Golf is not a linear game," insists Laughlin, and "Scoring is definitely not related to advancing the ball as far as possible on each shot." In this fun and accessible book, the radical golfer contends, for example, that players should approach the pin much like basketball players maneuver to shoot a basket by striving to shoot from their best, or "sweet" spot on the court. Laughlin also suggests that golf should be played as two separate games (of tee-to-green and putts) and that golfers should keep a separate scorecard for their putting game. Equally radical, Radical Golf calls for using a 2-iron for putts rather than the "dreaded" putter (the loft of the 2-iron matches the putter, "Calamity Jane," of legendary golfer Bobby Jones). Hole by hole, sensible shot after sensible shot, Radical Golf simulates a round of golf with a pro to show how a radical golfer can stay within strokes of par play. Written in a witty and easy-to-understand style, with entertaining sidebars and line drawings, Radical Golf will revolutionize how golf is played both on and off the course. Most of all, Radical Golf will increase the enjoyment of playing this great and challenging game. Radical Golf is just the book that could become the bible of the weekend golfer.

Book excerpt: Golf Ball Buddies conceptualizes the many aspects of golf from the unique perspective of animated golf balls as they observe their neighboring balls as well as the many characters that frequent the golf course. The buddies convey that the game of golf is so much more than a game being a life-long process for continuous improvement. They also give a greater appreciation for the difficult challenge golf can be but at the same time show that so many players derive great joy in trying. Intertwined in the buddies adventures are the explanation and clarification of about twenty of the most common and often misunderstood rules, the rich history of golf, many fun facts, and reminiscing of the great past players of the game. Some instructional comments are also offered up to help provide simplified and memorable visual imagery for improving the swing. A simplified method is something that eludes so many players who try to play this game and the joy is so much more immense when better scores are achieved. The lasting relationships built on the golf course, the banter among players, the intensity and the fun and are all what make this game great and they are certainly not missing in Golf Ball Buddies. Anyone who has ever swung a golf club or stepped out on a course will identify with the Golf Ball Buddies as they make rule clarification fun and swing instruction easy. As they observe and comment, their adventures give us; A better appreciation of the game and its traditions, an increased passion for golf, a clear understanding of the many situational rules encountered, and swing thoughts not often found in general complicated instructionthat will result in a definite advantage.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From “one of the best sportswriters in America” (The Washington Times)—the New York Times bestselling story of the friendship and rivalry between golf legends Tom Watson and Jack Nicklaus, whose sparring matches defined the sport for more than a decade. The first time they met, at an exhibition match in 1967, Tom Watson was a seventeen-year-old high school student and Jack Nicklaus, at twenty-seven, was already the greatest golfer in the world. Though they shared some similarities—they were both Midwestern boys who had learned how to play golf at their fathers’ country clubs—they differed in many ways. Nicklaus played a game of consummate control and precision. Watson hit the ball all over the place. Nicklaus lacked charm and theatrics, and he was thoroughly despised by most golf fans because he had displaced Arnold Palmer as king of the golf world. Watson was one of those Arnold Palmer fans. Yet over the next twenty years their seemingly divergent paths collided as they battled against each other again and again for a place at the top of the sport and drove each other to ever-soaring heights of accomplishment. Spanning from that first match through the “Duel in the Sun” at Turnberry in 1977 to Watson’s miraculous near-victory at Turnberry as he approached sixty, and informed by interviews with both players over many years, The Secret of Golf is Joe Posnanski’s intimate account of the most remarkable rivalry and (eventual) friendship in modern golf.

Book excerpt: My writings began approximately four years ago after receiving a comprehensive genealogy study on my father's side of the family. It prompted many questions about where we came from and how and why we ended up at the tip of Texas. Realizing that while the information was complete, it was lacking in stories. In pursuing more information to fill in some of the gaps, I realized that my children had no idea of my life's history, including my younger years, schooling, sports, military, college, and my thirty-plus-year career. My daughter had blessed me with an iPad, so I began. It is my life story from birth through retirement, and the data is factual, including the side and supplemental descriptions and stories. The youngest of seven children, born during the Depression in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas, on the Mexican border, and my life and experiences growing up there on three separate occasions. The forks appearing in my life's road began almost immediately upon graduation from high school when I accepted an athletic scholarship only to drop out during my first semester to join the military before the GI Bill benefits were to expire. After my military obligation and college periods were complete, I accepted my first position as an entry-level accountant with the Bureau of Reclamation in 1961 and proceeded up a career ladder for twelve years before reaching the top rung with an offer to transfer to Denver, Colorado, as regional finance officer in 1973. Five years later, I was asked to assume the first finance officer position with the newly created agency under the Department of Energy of the Western Area Power Administration. In 1980, I was approached to return to Reclamation as a finance officer in Salt Lake City, which was Reclamation's largest and most active region, and had assumed the finance functions for the nation's youth programs as well. The final career movement would come only three years later when the regional management received approval to combine the finance and budget functions in a reorganization effort and changing my title and expanded responsibilities to regional financial manager. Each of these career movements would provide new and different challenges containing many separate forks in my road. I enjoyed them all.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After a family friend bought one of his drawings for 20p, six-year-old Jack came up with the idea to 'draw anything' in return for donations to the hospital that treats his two-year-old brother. His parents set up a website and thought they might make £100. After two weeks, Jack had over 500 picture requests and had raised over £10,000 for the Sick Kids Friends Foundation. Parents Ed and Rose with Jack, Toby and Noah appeared on the Fern Britton Show and Jack's project was featured on Russell Howard's Good News four times. Coverage by STV news, BBC news, and CBBC Newsround have all helped spread the word about this creative and generous little boy. Jack is slowly but steadily drawing the requested pictures which range from a 'dinosaur diving into a pool of jelly' (#1) to 'my (extremely bald) friend Brian dancing like a crazy man' (#80). He doesn't draw every day, only when he wants to, and his parents estimate that he'll finish at the end of August. For the latest drawings, or to make a donation yourself, visit jackdrawsanything.com.

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The NBA according to The Sports Guy—now updated with fresh takes on LeBron, the Celtics, and more! Foreword by Malcom Gladwell • “The work of a true fan . . . it might just represent the next phase of sports commentary.”—The Atlantic Bill Simmons, the wildly opinionated and thoroughly entertaining basketball addict known to millions as ESPN’s The Sports Guy, has written the definitive book on the past, present, and future of the NBA. From the age-old question of who actually won the rivalry between Bill Russell and Wilt Chamberlain to the one about which team was truly the best of all time, Simmons opens—and then closes, once and for all—every major pro basketball debate. Then he takes it further by completely reevaluating not only how NBA Hall of Fame inductees should be chosen but how the institution must be reshaped from the ground up, the result being the Pyramid: Simmons’s one-of-a-kind five-level shrine to the ninety-six greatest players in the history of pro basketball. And ultimately he takes fans to the heart of it all, as he uses a conversation with one NBA great to uncover that coveted thing: The Secret of Basketball. Comprehensive, authoritative, controversial, hilarious, and impossible to put down (even for Celtic-haters), The Book of Basketball offers every hardwood fan a courtside seat beside the game’s finest, funniest, and fiercest chronicler.

The oldest was put on paper in 1991 and the latest in 2023. I have dedicated the book TO AN UNNAMED PERSON, and obviously had a specific person in mind when I wrote it in 1990, but when I read it today I perceive that as irrelevant. In my opinion, it should remain an unnamed person. Perhaps for you, when you read the book, it may give you associations, and perhaps you will also, in your thoughts, let it remain unnamed. The coloured illustrations are from my own collection of geometric paintings, original size 60x60 cm.

Book excerpt: Around about August 1948, Mr and Mrs Cyril Wakeman had an early night and some time later, at Perivale in Middlesex, Mrs Wakeman produced a bonny baby son. They named him Richard, but he quickly became known as Rick. Rick was a likeable little fellow who had a talent for the piano and for making trouble. Music became Rick's life - he joined a popular music group called Yes and became a legend. Much later he became a Grumpy Old Man who appears on Countdown, hosts a hugely popular radio show on Planet Rock and performs a one-man show telling stories about his rather extraordinary life. Which is where this book you are holding comes in. Mr Wakeman is simply one of the great storytellers of our age - let's face it, he has some fabulous material. It seemed a shame that some of the funniest yarns should not be more widely known. So he accepted some cash and here we are. Curl up by the fire with a Grumpy Old Rock Star and your nearest and dearest. We defy you not to want to read it aloud and laugh.
