Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The economic growth of India during the decades of the 1990s and 2000s is well documented. There is, however, little available explanation for this growth and thus how this can be repeated. This book documents the unequivocal effort by some individuals and teams that fashioned globally competitive businesses during this short span of time. This volume includes interviews with business leaders from thirteen businesses in order to capture the essence of creating unprecedented value. These stories unfold the creativity, risk taking ability, compassion for fellow human beings and, more than anything else, the celebration of the triumph of individuals. These thirteen leaders explain with incredible frankness their ingenuity in conceiving new lines of business. These stories will provide inspiration for future leaders and entrepreneurs not just in India, but all across the world. As such, this book will facilitate potential business leaders to invent new business models and establish themselves in the global markets – the world is looking at them to innovate as they structure their own career path.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development administration is concerned with plans, policies, programmes and projects which focus on nation building and socio-economic development. It aims to achieve socio-economic goals through the talents and expertise of bureaucrats. Development administration focuses on the results to be achieved rather than the traditionalist view of strict adherence to rules and hierarchy. Strict adherence to rules creates rigidness, delay and procrastination. The essence of development administration is to bring about change through integrated, organised and properly directed governmental action. In the recent past, the governments in most of the developing nations have shifted their focus on development by means of planned change and people’s participation. With this shift of administrative concern towards developmental objectives the researchers and practitioners of Public Administration have been forced to conceptualise the developmental situation and to bridge the gaps in the administrative theory. The growing welfare functions of the government have brought into the limelight the limitations of the traditional theory of administration. The essence of administration in the present conditions lies in its capacity to bring about change in the structure and behaviour of different administrative institutions, to develop an acceptance for the change and to create a system that can sustain change and improve the capacity of institutions to change. All this calls for renewed efforts on the part of institutions engaged in the tasks of development. Thus development administration as an area of study and as means to realise developmental goals assumes importance. This book contains plenty of substance for scholars, but the writing has the verve and clarity to seize and entertain the general reader as well. Contents: • Role of NGOs and Voluntary Organisations • Economic Policy in India Since Independence • Local Self Government: Meaning, Nature and Scope • Concept of Rural Development • Centralization and Decentralization • Population, Urban Environment and Health in India

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Debates over social movements have suffered from a predominate focus on North America and western Europe, often neglecting the significance of collective action in the global South. Citizenship and Social Movements seeks to partially redress this imbalance with case studies from Brazil, India, Bangladesh, Mexico, South Africa and Nigeria. This volume points to the complex relationships that influence mobilization and social movements in the South, suggesting that previous theories have underplayed the influence of state power and elite dominance in the government and in NGOs. As the contributors to this book clearly show, understanding the role of the state in relation to social movements is critical to determining when collective action can fulfil the promise of bringing the rights of the marginalized to the fore.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book uses a combination of business history and political economy to chart the development of Indian business organisation from independence in 1947 through to the twenty-first century. The Indian economy has undergone a dramatic transformation to become one of the leading global economies of the twenty-first century. After ending colonialisation and gaining independence in 1947, the economy moved from a reliance on the export of raw materials to an era of state-promoted development, followed by an era of liberalisation and integration in the world economy by the close of the twentieth century. This book looks at traditional industries, such as textiles, to industries of the second and third industrial revolution, ranging from chemicals and oils to telecommunications. This book highlights how Indian businesses proved capable of importing both new managerial ideas and organisational developments while adapting them to the specific domestic context. The case studies underline the use of human resource management in the post-colonial ‘indianisation’ of foreign-owned multinationals and the rise of new business organisation and management training in the development of Indian multinational organisations such as Tata Sons. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Business History.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a consequence of being sued by more than 20 foreign investors, India terminated close to 60 investment treaties and adopted a new Model Bilateral Investment Treaty (BIT) purportedly to balance investment protection with the host State’s right to regulate. This book is a critical study of India’s approach towards BITs and traces their origin, evolution, and the current state of play. It does so by locating them in India’s economic policy in general and policy towards foreign investment in particular. India’s approach towards BITs and policy towards foreign investment were consistent with each other in the periods of economic nationalism (1947–1990) and economic liberalism (1991–2010). However, post 2010, India’s approach to BITs has become protectionist while India’s foreign investment policy continues to be liberal. To balance investment protection with the State’s right to regulate, India needs to evolve its BIT practice based on the twin framework of international rule of law and embedded liberalism.
