Book excerpt: Clinical supervision is one of the most important and crucial components in the training of marriage and family therapists (Kaiser, 1992). The growing diversity in the United States, particularly in California, makes culture and cultural differences an imperative topic to understand – one that must be addressed. Diversity and multicultural competence are topics of high importance in the marriage and family therapy field. Due to an increase in diversity and interest in diversity issues in the university setting, supervisees may find themselves in cross-cultural supervisory relationships that are not matching their diversity knowledge when entering the field, a factor hindering their growth as therapists. This project develops an introductory workshop for both supervisors and supervisees on the ruptures in the supervisory relationship that can occur in cross-cultural supervision. The purpose of this workshop is to: 1) educated supervisors and supervisees on the subject of potential growth-limiting cross-cultural supervision; and 2) provide a safe space and environment to address these issues. The workshop provides a setting for both supervisors and supervisees to reflect on experiences and plan ways to improve the supervisory relationship. At the end of the workshop, participants will have an awareness of the ruptures that can arise in cross-cultural supervisory relationships, and the skills needed to begin the dialogue to repair or prevent rupture in the supervisory relationship.
